Grave Scarabs
« on: August 18, 2011, 03:34:29 PM »
I was surprised to find that if a beetle inflicts "wound" upon you, which it does everytime it hits you... you are as good as dead if you don't have any methods of instant healing with you. It stacks with each hit (from different scarabs) and it won't let you rest until you've healed it by using a potion or spell. It also won't let you use a healing kit on yourself as it interrupts the process rather quickly and it inflicts 1 damage per round per stack. Furthermore it continues to bleed you even after you have hit 0 health. Seeing as it bleeds a 1 damage per round that means that even with a single stack of it you would automatically die in 60 seconds as each round is 6 seconds. To me this seems more than a bit unbalanced for a lowbie dungeon as people with such low health may often find their deaths inflicted by a tiny beetle that inflicts tiny injury which bleeds and bleeds and bleeds until you are dead. :(
Current characters played:

Fenris Vahara
Kelict Maddos
Galius Corsairos

The only time I had a grave scarab spawn on me was when I checked a corpse. My new rule is don't touch the corpses, haven't seen one since.

That said a simple rule... don't touch the corpses makes this easily avoidable.

I agree tough, the little buggers are way OP for the dungeon they are in, but then again, I think that's kind of the point of the setting :)

This is always how I view an attack of grave scarabs. And as for them spawning,
Spoiler: show
they only seem to spawn randomly if you disturb the corpses in the niches.

Easy as that.
Some learn that and thus avoid the scarabs, some don't and thus need to bear the consequences.
Same as with smartmouthing the garda. Entering the heat-zones in the desert. Walking in well known traps in dungeons ... twice.

Have allready posted about this in another post.
It is not just the grave scarabs it is the aberrant leeches as well.
And even if you save the wounding effect, it will still hit you:P

And to clear it, it is not just the dont touch the corpses, sometimes at places they come out of the body, even if you dont touch it:) just go near the corpse, and they will spawn:P
Currently playing:
Rudrig von Rachenthall - the travelling merchant

>.> Little tip, any form of Slashing DR makes the danger of Grave Scarabs nonexistent. This includes things like Stoneskin or the War Domain's actvated ability :3

Meh. They have one hit point. Any kind of splash damage thing will kill them: acid flask, etc.

Anyone with about 7AB and decent AC can kill Scarabs easily enough, so people that meet these paramters tend to loot them.
A most troublesome Fox.
