Blaustein : Feedback

Wheres the rum !?

Description:

This dark spirit is made in Sourange as a fermented by product of sugar cane & aged in charred barrels, sometimes added to water on board ships to improve the taste of stale water or mixed with water & nutmeg to make Grog , the pirates favorite.

I considered it, but Blaustein should not be mistaken for Tortuga, and that would only contribute to it. It's not a chaotic pirate-haven. Instead, it's a terribly "lawful" place where all the law is in Bluebeard and his thugs' hands..and he doesn't like people causing trouble on his isle. This means that pirates that are chased by legal ships can go to Blaustein for a safe haven. So can normal merchants and travelers since it's a safe place in the middle of the sea. Here's what I wrote / elaborated on for Blaustein's law:

Quote
A small garrison of guards, best described as thugs, patrol the Castle walls and the few streets of the village ensuring no violence or crimes are commited. These guards often take liberties when applying the law and the most usual punishment on Blaustein is hanging. Lord Bluebeard rules the Village with an iron fist and does not let any sort of crimes go unpunished. In turns, this has made Blaustein a haven for pirates and any seafarers since within Blaustein's waters and on the isle itself, no one can harm another or attempt to capture them. This has given Blaustein a reputation as a freeport and a safe haven in the dangerous Sea of Sorrows.

I would like to see some more sea-themed dungeons associated with Blaustein.  Give people a reason to go there.  Maybe make the main city have a nice little casino with blackjack AND poker and any other little awesome games designed with scripts.  Just as the devil and demon dungeons were moved to Perfidius maybe we could move some not-quite-fitting dungeons to be visitable from Blaustein by low-cost ferry or hired guide, such as the piratey werewolves in the middle of mainland Barovia.  Perhaps some jungley islands available between Dementlieu and Blaustein, also.  If all the regions are made to have creatures with a CR of about 13 to 17 or so, it would be a nice place for mid-level parties to romp around aside from the forest and the vampires, which are too commonly cleared out.
Wouldn't the world be better off if we took nonsense more seriously?

Hello,

I visited the new dungeon in Blaustein last night, and it is pretty intense/exciting!  Overall, it's really fun for what seems to be a level 12-16 high stress romp.

One important bit of feedback, though, is that none of the loot was present.

Alas, after some hard-fought battles and much to our dismay, any potential searchable containers which appeared to be untouched, were completely empty.

I'm sure that's just a bug, but overall, it's a relatively short, fun dungeon!

I was wondering if the stance on this would change at all.  Rum would be a great addition to Blaustein at the in as it's a rather common export via ships that probably would either wreck on the treacherous rocks of Blaustein (thus be salvaged by the locals), as well as sold to stores by any "privateers" who commandeered supplies of it along the coastal regions.

Additionally, the one inn in Blaustein is called "Davy Jones' Locker," though wouldn't it be more apt to be called "Van Riese' Locker?"  In the sources I found, Van Riese sort of takes the position/mythos of Davy Jones in the Ravenloft setting, at least to my understanding.  I feel like it would be like a person naming an inn in Barovia "The Count Dracula."

Good point. I'll rename it.

It wouldn't make much sense; the reason people associate rum with piracy (or at least the "Golden" Age of Piracy) is because of the Antilles, where sugarcane grew aplenty and was turned into rum. Now, Blaustein is a cold rock in the middle of a foggy sea, where essentially nothing grows. It's also not a particularly popular trading spot, so people wouldn't ship rum from beyond the mists there either. Not to mention this would just lead people to think it's a pirate haven when it's not exactly that; it's just a port where the law is enforced so rigidly that no foreigners can attack one another, which makes it safe for those who want to escape the law of other lands, so long as they don't break Blaustein's laws themselves.

Souragne, with its vast sugarcane plantations, is the rum hotspot of Ravenloft. As per the PHB, they export both the sugarcane and the distilled spirits. Their primary Mistway, The Wake of the Loa, leads into the northwestern Nocturnal Sea just off the coast of Darkon. Presumably, Nevuchar Springs is awash with rum for that reason :P

Dementlieu trades with Souragne directly through a different link (and the specifics are a very FOIC thing) but the route doesn't stray anywhere near Blaustein.

The spirit of choice in Blaustein is probably cheap Ghastrian vodka ...
