Monster Ecology
« on: January 02, 2011, 07:30:03 PM »
Something that has irked me for a while that I think really goes unnoticed is the organization of some of the monsters, mainly the outsiders.

I've seen Demons and Devils fighting alongside each other a few times through either summons or through a spawn and heard that Demons and Devils are fighting alongside and defending a Hag in Lysaga Hill. If that's true, why hasn't the Blood War started up in Barovia? You think the Dark Powers would take precautions against such a things. A Baatezu and a Tan'nari in the same room is trouble enough, but when you throw a Gehennen in there...that's just wishing for global annihilation. I haven't checked out Peridifus yet since my level 11 is too squishy to go there, but I've heard it has the same thing going on there too. My main, Anton, has seen this several times and flips out, thinking the Fiends are going to over take the place and murder everything. If the War ended up breaking into Ravenloft, I doubt even the Dark Powers could cool it all down. Even the Lady of Pain usually just lets it burn itself out whenever it breaks in.

Cranium Rats are another thing. I don't know if they are some kind of different breed or just a mistake on the DM's part, but Craniums aren't able to exist out of Sigil's Sewers. They require a gas emitted from a certain kind of fungus that grows down there to breath.

Maybe it's something worth looking into, or maybe it's just me being OCD, whichever it is...that's up to you guys.

We are geeks, OCD is good. Heck, the Red Shirt Guy who called the WoW lore guys out on a screwup in Lore was enshrined as a hero.

Good question, too, I'm interested in the response.

All I will say regarding this topic is that there is a reason Perfidus is set up the way it is. Perfidus is a domain itself and if you see Devil (A devil) with Demons, it has IC reasons, which are pretty awesome. There's also a thick intrigue with the blood wars and plenty of write ups about it, in game.

Its a matter of finding out what's happening.

No offense intended, but it'd have to be one hell of a realm shattering justification. I mean the hatred those races share is...something that can't really be mitigated. If something on cosmic level power isn't able to override it, what is? Even Asemodeus, who claims to be immune to wanting to kill Demons, still goes to great lengths to not succumb to it. There's been instances where mind thralled fiends have broken epic level enchantments just to kill their enemies. I'd be more then willing to look into it, my character would take it up as some kind of crusade to help out the devils. A while back when the Yugoloths attacked Barovia, he was pretty much the only one who knew what was happening and the guy who rallied together the people that pushed it back. Big nod to all the guys that helped in that fight! Warbird, Andrio, Nara'ia, Jana, Melzaren, Thin, Amaril and the others I forget. Talking casually to a Pit Fiend polymorphed Warbird was fun as all hell.

OCD is a lovely thing for us nerds. Makes sure we get stuff right! It helps that I'm an active Planescape nut. I'd still be contributing to the major sites but Planewalker recently fell into disarray when they shifted their focus over to fourth edition and mimir has been out of commission for how long now? Hell, I'm still trying to continue the setting through other works, my actions on this server will be a big part of it.

Seeing as Ravenloft is a punishment, all I can presume is that Mr Devil in charge is being punished by having unruly demons as underlings.

Slightly related: I've heard that since you can't leave ravenloft, neither can summoned creatures. Is this true?

This is why demons summoned into Ravenloft get upset, yes.

Regarding summons, it's a general NWN issue really. We could overcome it, but it would be a bit circumstantial, since a part of how summons work is by adding the creature to your faction, and that part is hardcoded.

If demons and devils are fighting alongside at Lyssaga Hill, I imagine that's a slip-up of some sort. More specific detail would be great though.

Regarding Perfidus, it is indeed a very exceptional thing and nothing that's just done lightly. It is in a very concrete sense "realm shattering", to use the term, given that it's the reason Perfidus came to exist in the first place.

Are there any plans currently in development for splitting the demon/devil summons with an alignment check or something of the sort?   Like Khornite, I would be interested in seeing this epic division in philosophy played out on a smaller scale, imparted to PCs through even their summons.  I currently have my main, and I have not used the Summon Fiend ability because I know OOCly that it will give me a succubus, not something I believe fits in line with his patron.  Summoning themes on a whole could be amazing if implemented, I've seen them elsewhere, as others can surely attest, and they add a great deal to an otherwise mundane and cookie cutter spell.

....Mweeheehee..

I remember.. someone summoned a balor, and after the spell 'wore off' I spawned a balor NPC there in exchange, that was really unhappy.

That was fun :3

It's true, but we don't have scripted systems in place to portray this.
