The Faith of the Overseer:

Worship Centers: Western Darkon

References: Bleak House, Ravenloft Gazetteer II

Alignment: Lawful Good

Cleric Domains: Good, Law, Protection

Symbol: Two circles within two squares, forming an abstract sun

Favored weapon: Longsword

Notes: This small religion was founded in Matira Bay around 100 years ago. It stresses community and the hope that divine justice for all is possible in a world that often seems unfair. The religion is centered in the Darkonese city of Matira Bay and is led by High Priest Derakoth. They believe that the Overseer does not grant boons, but is witness to all the actions of one’s life and therefore rights any past wrongs in the afterlife. Mortals are expected to offer aid to others whenever possible, and likewise accept aid when it is given. The faith of the Overseer forbids idolatry, so there are no images of the Overseer in any temples or religious texts.

Spoiler: show
Due to the fact this faith is made up none of their 'clerics' get spells.

The faith is established in Martira Bay, in that side of Darkon it is pretty strong, that is not even Ezrites found a lot of appeal there. I used to play Caterina Fumosa as pretender of follower of that Church. For what I've seen, and interpreted it, it is very similar to the "good" side of the Morninglordians, they try more a genuine help of the poor people than fighting evil: as a matter of fact their real help is very mundane. Maybe Blue can add something to this.

yea, id have thought their way of 'help' is things like helping with manual labour, sharing what food they have with the poor etc.

i mean, are we talking young knights roaming the lands, giving bullys and opressors whats coming to them and liberating small villages from the strangled hold of a bandit leader..

or, just honest average joes rolling up their sleeves?

It's a local religion. I honestly don't think they are either miilitant preachers or "expansionists".

Spoiler: show
The old monastery where Gilos here is apparently a former Overseer temple. As a matter of fact I was sort of surprised of seeing Gilos so far from home, I have tried in time to find out more about it with different characters but with no success.

every world religion has a militant side to it, even the peaceful ones, there was a period in japan where the country was under serious threat from the buddhist temples in the mountains.

all it takes is for one retired soldier to take the principles on board, and witness an injustice, if he interprets a principle in a certain way he may go back to his home and retreive the sword he had kept under his bed.

and well, if your low level, gilos is no laughing matter he hits like a brick. though he does have divine magic wich according to herkles he shudnt.

you know you could always go wiht a style of paladin , that the dark powers have given some minor abiliies from thier god. would be interesting.

Beware my power… Green Lantern’s light!”

Reiko and Caterina researched the overseer for a period, Reiko even had a nice book until a day she lost it in Bluetspur.
Probably one of the funnest things I've ever done on PotM, was researching that monastery and the religion in-character.
I survived the Blue Water Inn Massacre and all I got was this t-shirt.

There really isn't much on the religion aside from what's in Bleak House and Gazetteer II.

Spoiler: show
It's a fake religion started by the Kargat and used to find potential enemies. The figurehead high priest seems to truly believe in the religion, but he is likely under the thrall of Kazandra.

I see, so theres no conspiracy really, the majourity of the people of the Bay arent' in on it and follow the teachings legitimately, with maybe a few higher ranking 'priests' in on it, who 'squeal' on anyone in their congregation whos acting treasonous. and the kargat come and drag them away in the night....?

its definately and interesting religion.
