Charred grass and droplets of blood reveal a scene of conflict near the wall. The stench of sewer lingers over the area as talk of a Caliban lugging two corpses out of the well in broad daylight spread. The trip to sanctuary was cut short by the Garda. Angry and proud, the Caliban decided to give the interaction an explosive end before retreating back into the well.

Balthazaar the Executioner, the hulking headsman in the Count's service, passes through Vallaki's western gates. In his charge is a chained woman in tattered dress, the accent to her plaintive sobs marking her as Gundarakite. The city's locals take pains to avoid scrutinizing either His Excellency's servant or the bruised and bleeding woman, drawing closed their shutters a little earlier in the day than they otherwise might. The two figures vanish behind the gates of the Citadel.

At dusk a cloaked figure would exit the city gates and place a small wreath near the makeshift memorial.  The figure would stay for a while before heading South.

A brightly dressed young Vistani man in purple and gold atop a fine black horse is seen escorting a herd of lost-looking rich types into the Outskirts. He is seen leaving them by the Lady's Rest Inn before galloping into the city and finding solitude in some dull Inn in the slums...

Danut Solinescu, the wandering Morninglordian, can be seen removing corpses from the Church and interring them in the crypts out back. A prayer of blessing was placed upon the mausoleum in hopes the dead would find their final rest.

A pyre burned in the night behind the Sanctuary of the Coming Dawn. In the morning all that was left was a pile of soot and ash.

The Vallaki Garda are seen to be at heightened tension after many of their own were slain west of the city. Several barricades have been erected outside of the gatehouse, and a Private Bengescu is seen putting up wanted posters throughout Vallaki.

A ginger Tepestani woman pinned a parchment on the tree in front of Lady's Resting Place, then she walks to the east with a Darkonese man clad in plate armor.

[The other day, starting on the dawn of the Twelfth of November, the Lady's Rest was not just teeming, but stuffed to the gills with patrons and onlookers. The basement had become decorated with a plethora of strange and macabre ornaments and art pieces, from wooden skeletons to a carving of a ghoul to a small shrine detailing the Ezrite rendition of the receding of the dead at the beginning of Darkon's history. Adventurers, townsfolk, and suspicious types alike flooded the inn's basement dressed in monstrous costumes to mingle, dance, and celebrate the Darkonian holiday, the Festival of the Dead. Midway through the celebrations, one of the performers was accosted by the garda and refused arrest. This led to him being beaten by several guards before having his head crushed to a pulp by the tavern's bouncer, Radu himself. This created an awkward lull in the night, which was thankfully salvaged by several events which followed the gruesome event. By dawn, the partygoers slowly trickled out of the basement and into the waking countryside either to further their adventures, enjoy the morning air, or depart from Barovia now that the mountain passes had thawed enough.]

Among many others, a small oxcart arrived in Vallaki today. The hackman was a couple of heads shorter than an ordinary man, and wore a deep cowl. In the wagon itself were three figures more, all bundled in blankets: two small children, and a Barovian man attending to them. The little ones looked quite thin and anxious.
The wagon trundled towards the Residential District, and after, to the Warehouse District, sans cargo.
It is not an ending, but an ebbing.

[Two variations of a call were placed across lands of Barovia. One having a longer excerpt for reading than the other.]

Dear reader,

Would you like for your story to be known?

We are a small fellowship of writers seeking to fill a book with tales of the otherworldly, and extend to you a very special opportunity to contribute to these works with your own experiences of the supernatural.

Quote from: Notice

Spoiler: show

In this edition we will focus on stories of corruption when the seemingly innocuous becomes a greater danger than our hearts would imagine. For your titillating delight, we have one such excerpt:

Quote from: The Blood-Bound Boy

Large brown eyes with the innocence of youth, a child lost and searching, at times mischievous and often capricious. He wanders in search for family for a time but he finds something more. His smile widens and spreads like cracks in the earth; a fissure formed to expose teeth like thorny roots. He smiles of barbs, of spines, and ruin, for the boy has found you and he desires to play.

A terrible haunting... one from a boy who makes the land bleed where he steps and animals twist and speak with screams and voices of the unnatural. He will remind that he is ever watching and waiting through song heard unbidden; singing, chanting, drums, and violins. Various instruments heard without ever revealing the source.

No other will see him yet he will come night after night to break the silence of the hour to visit those whose company he has come to favor. When the shadows stretch long the boy will stand among them and outreach his hand to beckon descent into the terrible dark. Promises the games will end, for else they would be unending, if one merely play along...

The boy seemingly not a child at all...

If this story or stories like it interest you and you would like to contribute your own accounts, we would welcome opportunity to hear your tale. There will be hospitality and, of course, compensation for your time.

Quote from: Notice v2

Spoiler: show

If you hold stories of the unknown or believe you may have experienced something otherworldly, we endeavor to craft a book of legends that will immortalize the folktales woven throughout the lands of Barovia.

Whether you have encountered shadowy figures in the forests, seen mystical creatures, or caught whispers of voices and songs audible solely to your ears, we beckon you to share your tales. Your stories, no matter how small or large, shall be welcomed with attentive ears. Food and drinks will be provided during your visit.

For a month's span, an assembly of armored knights and standard-bearers has paraded through Vallaki's thoroughfares. Their disciplined march, donned in uniforms of a somber, brooding green, has not gone unnoticed. A distinctive insignia, that of a claw, adorns only a select few among them, even fewer instead bare the hand of Bane.
In the recent week, their ranks have swelled noticeably, frequently traversing the Svalich road. Rarely do they tarry in Vallaki's outskirts, except for brief intervals of an hour or two. The group, known by the names "Obsidian Claw" or "Ebon Claw," is far from clandestine and keep mostly a lawful demeanour.

A few members of the Garda could be seen moving around, cycling and moving notices on and off the noticeboards. Seemingly new details announced, and aged ones removed.

[Early one morning, an Ezrite in the white robes of a layperson or trainee of the Church walks out to the Outskirts, a dainty red umbrella held in one hand to shield her from the rain while a large, heavy book is held to another. The Ezrite begins to read aloud from the book, soon revealed to be the Fourth Book of Ezra, loudly preaching to the mixed assembly of Barovians and Outlanders gathered about on the street.

The preaching is met with resistance by a few Outlanders, who begin to loudly preach about their own respective gods in retaliation for the impromptu sermon. When the exchanges reach a critical point, the garda intervene, ordering all preaching to halt and for the road to be quiet. Outlanders and Ezrites alike return to their own business. The figure in white robes rejoins her group, whispering quietly with the assembly before they walk elsewhere.]
