Yes, I didn't find anything relevant. My worst fear is a damaged copy, which is strange, since I have two discs of Diamond, one CD key. One SHOULD work, but both are experiencing the same issue. I suspect something with my PC, since there was a rollback on my PC, and somehow the game was uninstalled. Perhaps a reformat of my hard drives will fix it.

It is possible that as the game wasn't properly uninstalled but sort of 'disappeared' during a rollback its registry entries were not modified/removed properly. So as the game tries to update them during certain parts of the installation it cannot do so properly and the installation fails. Its just a guess though.

That sounds highly plausible. How would you go about fixing that?

From bioware tech support:

1.04: How do I manually uninstall Neverwinter Nights?

    If you need to manually uninstall Neverwinter Nights, follow these steps:

    1. Delete the folder where the game was installed
    2. Remove the entry from the start menu
    3. Remove the following Windows Registry key using RegEdit:

    MyComputer \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows \CurrentVersion \Uninstall \{7C503E58-B2BC-11D5-978A-0050BA84F5F7}

    4. Remove the following Windows Registry key using RegEdit:

    MyComputer \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \BioWare \NWN \Neverwinter

    5. Remove the hidden folder:

    C: \Program Files \InstallShield Installation Information \{7C503E58-B2BC-11D5-978A-0050BA84F5F7}

    (where C: is the drive on your system with the Program Files folder)

    At this point, there should be no traces of the game on the system.

    ***********************************************************

    If you need to manually uninstall NEVERWINTER NIGHTS GOLD EDITION, follow these steps:

    1. Delete the folder where the game was installed
    2. Remove the entry from the start menu
    3. Remove the following Windows Registry key using RegEdit:

    MyComputer \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows \CurrentVersion \Uninstall \{A4C10EEF-D26C-410D-82E7-73370C6FD812}

    4. Remove the following Windows Registry key using RegEdit:

    5. Remove the hidden folder:

    C: \Program Files \InstallShield Installation Information \{A4C10EEF-D26C-410D-82E7-73370C6FD812}

    (where C: is the drive on your system with the Program Files folder)

    There should be no traces of the game on the system.

    ***********************************************************

    If you need to manually uninstall NEVERWINTER NIGHTS PLATINUM EDITION or NEVERWINTER NIGHTS DIAMOND EDITION, follow these steps:

    1. Delete the folder where the game was installed
    2. Remove the entry from the start menu
    3. Remove the following Windows Registry key using RegEdit:

    MyComputer \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows \CurrentVersion \Uninstall \{C1583439-B034-4881-819C-D52A0587662B}

    4. Remove the following Windows Registry key using RegEdit:

Update:

It was a Remote Procedure call, sorry for the mistake. It says it failed to make one.

While a good idea, your solution didn't succeed, Blacky. :/

Also, when I started the installation, this time, it said before starting, "Could not find a proper installation."

  Try running the installer in administrator mode.  I've had an install of a program fail because it didn't have write access before.

Not under windows xp, at least, not that I know of.

I'm out of ideas as to what the problem might be at this point but there are a few things you can try I suppose:

* Make sure the game disks work by trying to install them under another machine.

* Run msconfig, go to the Services tab, and make sure Remote Procedure Call and Remote Procedure Call Locator are checked.

* Make sure the hard disk you're trying to install it under does not have any bad sectors.

* Try to install a version of nwn that is not the diamond/platinum edition.

* Reinstall the operating system.

* Install another operating system onto another hard disk or partition and try to install nwn under that.

Attempted to re-install after a nasty virus wipe.

When it comes time in install CD 3 i get the message:
Aborting Installation-> Setup has changed files on your system that will cause NWN not to work->Return game to a playable setup run Critical Rebuild.exe on root CD.

Went to root CD(CD 1) and CriticalReubuild said to: 1. Uninstall NWN 2. Install NWN 3. Update NWN with updater.

Except since the install was interupted I can't uninstall it to install it.

Suggestions?

Yeap, stuck in an endless loop. Could the CD be bad?

Is this the same as CriticalRebuild.exe found on the 1st Installation CD?

I searched Bioware. All i found was Critical Rebuild for patches. Is that what I want?

Yes. You'll need it anyway since the updater no longer works.

No. I think the issue maybe my OS. Win 7.

Based on some research on the Bioware forum. I opened CriticalRebuild.exe and changed its properties so it can run Win 98 but still same error.
No idea what to do.

I am starting to fear the inevitable.

I've got Windows 7 and didn't have these issues. I installed NWN from my Diamond disk, and then installed the 1.69 critical rebuild patch from the Bioware forums. That's it.
