Item - Pitch Black Dye
« on: December 20, 2009, 10:04:26 PM »
Why have we had our special dyes taken away from us? :/

I would like them back.  They were fun and useful.

Seems odd, considering that many clothes sold have pure black and pure white as their colors.

Yeah, that's intended. Pure Black and Pure White can be used to good effect in minimal doses. The problem is that when too much is used, it just becomes ugly. DMs can still lend you dyes to do minor touch-ups.

Would have been nice to have known that they never should have been sold during the months they were being sold. It also would have been nice to know they were being taken out in the changelog update instead of finding out by traveling all the way to Port-a-Lucine and trying to buy them.  :banghead:

Okay whaaat.....seriously? That's like banning black painting to paint your own house on your own property because 'someone's' taste might get offended.

Makes little sense if you ask me..

Probably because some people paint their entire characters with the colour (with no other colour) and it makes their clothing lose any sense of detail.

i think its racist to outlaw pure white and pure black dyes. they should be allowed to mix with the other colors. just listen to the king of pop

It's anyway a choice... I haven't seen that many in pure whole black or white anyway :) Anyway, I don't think DMs will deny polite requests for those colours...

Oh, thank the Gods. I'm sick of dead-pixel black, it looks entirely unrealistic. Same with white. I've seen it used to good effect once or twice, but when people walk around with entire cloaks and coats painted the same colour as dark matter...

If pure black and white is available for every one we will get people walking around in complete pure black/white gear. We don't want that. Like EO said, you can ask a DM to lend a pure black dye to give touches to your armor/clothing.

If you don't like reflecting metal parts, turn "Environment Mapping on Creatures" off. You can find it under "Video Options" > "Advanced Video Options".

However they were available for everyone for months and "everyone" has not been walking around in complete pure black / white gear. In fact I have seen far more people going around in complete looks like that before Port-a-lucine was added (and before the dyes were available) than I have seen since.

When the three colours in question were selected, the art dealer popped up a convo saying those colours weren't available, but do to a bug that was fixed he would still sell them anyways.

I do not see how that is relevant to the point I was making.  The point was they were available to everyone for quite some time. I did not even know that they were not supposed to be sold until this thread started.

To me the pitch black dye looks like velvet. Its extremely useful for blending together two material zones of different type, like "metal" and "leather", especially useful for getting rid of the metal zones of 0 ac torsos that shouldn't have any metal at all. For example:

Come on, you know that's dead sexay. :D

In small amounts it can be really nice for the exact reason you mentioned, but when used to cover metal helmets completely, or long robes it takes away from any texture the item once had and just looks... dumb.  This is an issue when it's so readily available.
