Whoops!

:3

I blame all the people who refuse to capitalise the start of their sentences.

A lower case 'l' looks some much like a capital 'I'!

Oh, man, yes. I don't know when it started exactly, but when people started using Ladul instead of Iadul, I could not help but to see Ladel. People cursing by a ladel. Wanting people to go to Ladel, which is the evil plane of serving spoons?

I used to use Ladul quite often, as that's what everyone else used. One day I decided to google it out of curiosity, and naturally, nothing came up. Then it struck me: It's Iadul, not ladul. It made way more sense (particularly the latin root of Romanian) and the moment I googled it, this came up:

To be honest, I wasn't sure if it was a Ravenloft-canon bastardization (as in the Ravenloft writers screwed up), or if we were just DOING IT WRONG

The funny thing is, after I switched to "Iadul," people started to 'correct' me  :roflmao:

I fear the damage has already been done. Also, I'm wondering how you would pronounce that ("Iadul")?

Romanian is a romance language, and as such the vowel sounds are rather structured like Italian and Spanish.  'a' like father, 'e' like echo, 'i' like indigo, 'o' like taco, and 'u' like excuse.

The best example of the Ia together with these sounds from popular culture is the parrot character from Disney's Aladdin (1992)

(picture)

And that character was named after the Iago in Shakespeare's Othello.  But as you probably have heard before, some pronunciations of this character sound more like an English 'Y' sound.  i.e. "Yago".

Applying the same principle to the word iadul would result in a pronunciation  "Yahdul".

(hope this explanation was not overly elaborate)

Romanian is one of the closest languages to original Latin.

Iadul would be pronounced "Yahdool," similar to how IVLIVUS is pronounced "Yoolioos"

I always had it down as Ear-Dull, with a hard 'y' sound in the 'Ear'. 'Eyah-dull'.

Yahdool dosen't quiet sound threatening. Sounds like an internet provider, or a milkshake. Or both.

No, this is great, thanks! It helps because if you didn't otherwise explain it, I'd question whether or not you'd be right.

It's very useful to me to be able to know how to pronounce it IRL, because I remember it easier without having to consult my cheat sheet. Also, you never know when your character might have to come up with a limerick or something. ;)
