Problem of unknown origin.
« on: August 28, 2009, 04:26:37 PM »
Last morning I was quietly playing and had been playing quite a while with no particular issue. I was also listening to some music using windows media player, than at some point I wanted to close it, I minimized, it went in loop, blue screen, restart, problems.

After that I've been unable to run NWN properly, and so other games, the sounds are all wavy and distorted, the computer -seems- generally more lagged than it used to be. Given for granted I've not noticed any increase in my CPU usage, that I've removed I-tunes (which had given some issues in the past), updated windows media player, run a 6-hour-long anti-virus scan (and found some, removed and none luckily in the register), the problem is still there.

The character moves normally but every few seconds it freezes especially in presence of NPCS (not tried with PCs but it is likely it can be even worse), fps is highly unstable, but I had not had issues with graphic card in the past 10 days, since I came back here. I'm also trying to update the drivers of my graphic card just in case.

My computer is this:

Processor:  Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory:    2048MB RAM
Hard Drive:    500 GB Total
Video Card:    NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT
Sound Card:    SoundMAX HD Audio
Operating System:    Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3 (2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090206-1234)

The sound card is integrated in the motherboard.

Any help?

If you can, try to reinstall the audio drivers, sounds like they got corrupted, but I could be wrong.

Tried that once with the option re-install. If the update of graphic card is of no help I will totally uninstall it and eventually install it, not using the auto-option.

Treid both the things, it seems going always the same which is slightly playable but which doesn't allow me any easy walk/run from and to places, nor fighting, I should check how it goes by standing in a place. I hope something weird happens to the computer which fixes it as it suddenly ruined :). For now I don't think I'm able to play properly.

It's either your sound or your RAM.

Integrated sound cards are always crap and are usually the source of problems like this. Try disabling it completely--and by that I don't mean NWN, but in the Windows control panel, and see if that helps.

If not, you might have some bad RAM somewhere, although corrupted RAM usually causes a lot more problems with stability, so I'm thinking it's the integrated sound.

Now on my mule. After having tried to run again antivirus and gone to bed, I found the computer constantly trying to restart, going on a black screen in which asks in which way it should start (if not chosen anything goes on normal start, but I've tried all the options), opens the main windows xp screen, goes blank, restart, repeat.

At this point I need techinicians. It can be a virus, or some issue with motherboard.

And my absence from the game can be prolonged since NWN doesn't work properly on this computer at all.

See you all soon.

*Sighs*.

Have you tried system restoring?  Might be a longshot, but... never know, I guess.

So baby computer got back. Now. It has been formatted since it was full of viruses and okay. The guys told me there was no hardware issue. Yet, I have still the same issues with the sounds being wavy and which cause me a general lag when playing games (not only NWN). If I decided to disable the sound card, what should I do? Do you think it might fix waiting for me to get a new one?

How can I disable it properly? Mind, I'm really not the computer-geek.

AAAAAAAAANNNND... as some of you noticed yesterday I as extremely lagged (FPS went down to 1 sometimes) and I crashed all the time. I gave a break to the computer who, despite just formatted with windows XP installed anew, with just 3 programs re-installed, decided it was the time to go in loop again. I'm again on my mule, I wonder if this time technicians will understand they must check my hardware and not going "Let's format and fix!" by default...

It could be driver issues with your sound/motherboard, so make sure you've got the latest drivers for your motherboard and sound card. Audio and motherboards can actually be kind of tricky without really being a hardware thing. Luckily, if it was hardware, you'd know it was either a soundcard or the motherboard rather than the other eight pieces so replacing them is relatively easy. Make sure you've got the right audio options selected as well. Sometimes you have the option of onboard, HD audio, and so on and that's when it can get really confusing to mess with.

And need to reinstall NWN. So see you in some time.

[EDIT] And by the way lost 2 years of data of my life. Who knows me probably will tell me, "Better like this, you need to move on".
