Game crashed with nvidia 8800 GT. Any ideas?
« on: May 24, 2009, 05:23:06 AM »
Hello everyone. Long time no see I guess...

After a long break from Neverwinter Nights due to work, time in the army and such I have decided to give Ravenloft and Neverwinter Nights another try as I remember how fun it used to be. Though it seems like I've ran into trouble already...

I got a nVidia 8800 GT graphic card and I use Windows XP, and when I try to start Neverwinter Nights it just crashes, before any intro videos or anything comes to life. It appears as if the newer nVidia driviers doesn't support Neverwinter Nights with my graphic card and it appears to be a well known issue... Though I can't seem to find any solution to it, where to find old drivers and such?

Do anyone know anything about this? I hope someone can help me on this as I'd love to get back roleplaying in Ravenloft.

Thanks in advance.

I have a similar card (Nvidia 8800 GTX) and running the latest Nvidia drivers, and no issues, in XP, Vista or Linux.  I did however, have an issue with NWN a few years ago, similar to what you describe, and it turned out to be a sound card/driver issue instead of GPU issue.

Post more detailed specs here.  Including what build of XP, and the version number of the drivers, I think I can help.

You could try NDubyaConfig version 0.95, found here:http://www.dungeonplanet.com/2009/04/nwn-ndubyaconfig-version-095

It will allow the bypassing of the opening movies, which sometimes crash me as well, as well as a few other modifications that may help.

Back up your config file before making any changes though, just in case.

Try downgrading to 181.22 drivers.
Those date back to january and are the absolute last drivers my 7800 can and will support. Beyond that the card is ignored.
If i can find the link i will edit/post it.

Also, check the bioware forums and see if this hasn't been fixed already.

Tried some older drivers... Like 181.22 and 167.26 that came with my Graphic card but no luck... Going to contact the company that I bought my computer from so many years ago and see what kind of sound card I realy got!

Laptop?  If so, the version that shipped with your PC is out of date, and so is the one available for download from your manufacturer's website.

And, you cannot download the latest one from nvidia.com because the laptop video chips do not have a matching entry in the INF file.

The solution is to go to here http://laptopvideo2go.com/ and download the latest Nvidia driver with a modified INF file that will support laptop video chips.

If you have a desktop card, ignore the above.  Go directly to www.nvidia.com and download the latest driver.

make sure you're not using Realtek audio drivers. I had to go buy a soundblaster and completely remove the realtek drivers to stop the crashes on my computer.

I use realtek audio drivers and don't seem to have the problem.

But then again I have a different  nvidia card.

I have a nVidia 8800GT and a Realtek soundcard, and the game runs for me.

However - it DOES crash on startup often. Usually I just need to start it again and it will work. It's always been a weird bug, but that's just how it works I guess.

It actually crashes if you click buttons too quickly at start-up.

Spamming enter and left mouse clicking is a sure way to kill it.

Hilarious those Bioware programmers..

Realtek is crap. Utter, utter crap. If it's not causing NWN to crash, it's most likely behind other crashes on your computer.

NWN appears to dislike the 8800.  There are tons of posts about it on the Bioware forums.  I have better luck running the game using nwmain.exe rather than using nwn.exe, although my problem may be related to the dual/quad core processor, which it also doesn't like.
