Move Silent rolls on chests breaking invisibility.
« on: February 24, 2009, 10:56:01 PM »
Why does opening a chest (some chests, anyway) provoke a move silent roll, and why does failure break invisibility? Just because someone can hear you doesn't mean they can see you and then stab you in the back repeatedly why suddenly your strength drops for no apparent reason (which might be a result of encumbrance and bad timing, or maybe the things had some strength draining attack, not sure.)

Here's the description of the spell:

 Invisibility  Illusion (Glamer)
Level:    Asn 2, Brd 2, Sor/Wiz 2, Trickery 2
Components:    V, S, M/DF
Casting time:    1 standard action
Range:    Personal or touch
Target:    You or a creature or object weighing no more than 100 lb./level
Duration:    1 min./level (D)
Saving Throw:    Will negates (harmless) or Will negates (harmless, object)
Spell Resistance:    Yes (harmless) or Yes (harmless, object)

The creature or object touched becomes invisible, vanishing from sight, even from darkvision. If the recipient is a creature carrying gear, that vanishes, too. If you cast the spell on someone else, neither you nor your allies can see the subject, unless you can normally see invisible things or you employ magic to do so.

Items dropped or put down by an invisible creature become visible; items picked up disappear if tucked into the clothing or pouches worn by the creature. Light, however, never becomes invisible, although a source of light can become so (thus, the effect is that of a light with no visible source). Any part of an item that the subject carries but that extends more than 10 feet from it becomes visible.

Of course, the subject is not magically silenced, and certain other conditions can render the recipient detectable (such as stepping in a puddle). The spell ends if the subject attacks any creature. For purposes of this spell, an attack includes any spell targeting a foe or whose area or effect includes a foe. (Exactly who is a foe depends on the invisible character’s perceptions.) Actions directed at unattended objects do not break the spell. Causing harm indirectly is not an attack. Thus, an invisible being can open doors, talk, eat, climb stairs, summon monsters and have them attack, cut the ropes holding a rope bridge while enemies are on the bridge, remotely trigger traps, open a portcullis to release attack dogs, and so forth. If the subject attacks directly, however, it immediately becomes visible along with all its gear. Spells such as bless that specifically affect allies but not foes are not attacks for this purpose, even when they include foes in their area.

Invisibility can be made permanent (on objects only) with a permanency spell.

Arcane Material Component: An eyelash encased in a bit of gum arabic.

Those various chests have annoyed me for a long time, but since they finally got me killed for the first time, I've decided to actually say something. :-P Doesn't make a damned bit of sense to have your invisibility broken by them. Not even upon taking anything out of the chest, but simply by opening them. It's quite annoying. I understand it's just there to prevent ninja'ing, but it's still irritating. :-P

Casting Silence doesn't stop it either. Further with the radar the monsters have always moving towards where last seen, even if you can Hide/MS and move around a corner they still auto spot and bear down upon your char with radar sense.

Sneaks have it rough read. With DC's of 25 to 55 to open locks and that being what is subtracted from the MS roll it's impossible unless you are DP'ed or have legendary equipment of old there is no way to sneak the loot, wether invis or hiding. I'd suggest half the DC of the lock, but really it's not a loud task to pick a lock, and really should be minuscule in sound.

Thanks DW!

You can get the loot easily if you're a sneak. When you perform actions, it only takes a certain number of points off for that roll. Those rolls are cumulative, but disappear after a short time. So. If you go up to the chest. Unlock it. Wait. Open it. Wait. Pull an item out. Wait. Pull ANOTHER item out. Wait. So you can get the entire contents of a chest, swords and axes and all, and somehow put them into your bags, without really ever getting more than a -10 to your hide roll. And given the HS/MS of most sneaks worth their salt here, that's nothing.

Move slower. You can ninja just about anything if you're a sneak.

I'm speaking more of the roll initiated when sneaking if you pick the lock. It makes a Hide roll at normal, but the MS is performed with the lock picking DC subtracted from the Move Silent roll. If by some miracle you can make it, some monsters have 0 spot and you get lucky with the rolls, then the normal item -10 applies which is a breeze. Basically if you can make the first insane MS check, your clear. Give it a try, the MS roll on opening the lock is the one I am referring too. Silence doesn't mask it either.

The encumbrance was from Crippling strike. Those monsters in the forest fane are nasty. =D

Thanks DW!

Oh. Sorry. I'll remove it from the title.

But, it's still lame.

Ah, thanks for informing me of that change. Now I know never to make a thief. :)
