Auto follow tool
« on: February 17, 2009, 08:35:58 PM »
I more than once have found myself having to juggle typing and walking or running. Heck even now I'm juggling typing and walking. Sometimes I'll even use barter as a makeshift follow tool but you need to keep taking it off and putting it back on. Would it be possible to include one to the server?

The only potential exploit I see is following an invisable person, but I think it would help overall to be able to chat and not have to worry about a monster ambush.

thoughts and opinions?

Well, it'll be really easy to implement - I'm just wondering if it'll be over-used, and people will start all following one leader. Anyway, worth a try - I'll add a [follows] emote... :)

it can be abused:

Someone stealthy is folowing a mage or other stealth with the autofollow widgy, then the mage casts invis and starts to run away. the sneak doesnt have to do anything but wait for the autofollow tool takes him to the mage unless he leaves the area

we're doooomed ! DOOOOOOOOOMED !!

just type "@follow" without the quotes. You will follow the person closest to you. It works like a charm!

Works great, but sometimes if your PC gets too far from the target, he may get  spawned close again, but I don't think this is a baaaad thing, fine by me ;D

So you can basically use @follow in the following way?

1) cast haste on a lvl 20 monk.
2) Type @follow while near him.
3) Follow him as he speeds through PotM.

Can be classified as exploit, but apparently it's possible. Most the time the character wikll teleport near the monk.

Eh? This sounds not good at all and why are we so lazy to need this? :P

Doesn't sound to optimal. Someone invis just marks you with this nonsense and walks after you all the way to your hideout...

You're jumping to conclusions, try the tool out first. There are already tons of flaws that can be exploitable in the engine and if we see anyone exploiting the follow tool we will deal with it just the same.

Conclusions or not, we do not need a tool to walk after someone dammit.

Do we really need "World of Warcraft" trains on POTM too?  :P

The tool is a nice option.  If a party is travelling from 'x' to 'y' and during that time my dog is standing at the front door telling me he needs to go out to take a leak, I can take him out for a couple minutes without having to slow the party down.  My fiance comes home and has a few bags of groceries in the car, and once again, the auto follow is a nice tool.

I love this tool and use it all the time. I am always interrupted by endless little things during the day. Before this tool any group I traveled with spent more time waiting than anything else it seemed. It takes long enough to walk to a dungeon or the village without waiting for me to answer a phone call, clean up after a cat, etc.

Waiting is waiting. Better to wait then follow and get in an ambush or something. It is rather a bad idea with follow, can be abused and so on. Now you gonna tell me not to use it myself but well, it looks rather fun to see people run on that..."train" and get ported about.

I'll thank you to not dictate to me what is better for me and the people that I party with.
