-before- I had kids, I frequently sat down on a Friday night at 7pm ish, and stayed there till 7am.  :P Those were the days, right Julie? XD

edit: and so this post isnt a complete waste. . . .

I agree with Icon that a ratio of two IC years to one real life is year is pheasible. Way too much has happened for just three years.

As wrong as it may be I always did consider the irl to ig time ratio as 1-10. May well be a stretch, but hasn't created any problems so far. We also do have to consider the fact that our pcs don't vanish when we log on, etc. I haven't had any problems since I'm honestly never asked "What year is it?" Whatver the dm team comes up with though, i'm all for it. [thumbs up]

Ehm, this thread is almost 6 years old. Let's hope they'd have figured it out by now.

Commonly asked question.  Good that it's here.

This is why I posted it. I counted it up and this is the current IG year for the server.

The year is 769.

EDIT: This is the thread I use. Every year it gets bumped with what the new year is. It also will answer all of your questions on character aging.

I actually get asked this question every now and then, and it's always been long enough that I forget and then I have to scrounge to find this thread so that I know.

The term is "Barovian Calender" not "Barovian Common Era"  :teach:

Probably because they were the first domain and thus a reference point for all the domains that followed? Just my guess.

IS it the first domain? I mean, OOCly by the campaign it is, but aren't there actually older, more ancient domains than Barovia that were just unlinked, or whatever?

Domains of Dread certainly implies that it was the first domain. I found this tidbit on page 25 of the pdf:

"It has long been the tradition of scholars in Ravenloft to use the Barovian calendar when keeping track of events in the
Demiplane of Dread. This is done for many reasons, custom and practicality among them. The fact that it is the accepted
standard in Barovia, Necropolis, and among the wandering Vistani makes it as good a yardstick as any. This being the case,
we shall adopt the same practice here.
"

Edited to add: Domains of Dread says that Barovia was the first and only domain for the first 196 years of existence on the Demiplane of Dread until the Mists brought in Forlorn in the year 547.

If you read the Gazeteers, they also make it clear that Barovia is the first nation to really have a solid history in the core, every other nation's history in the mists appears after Barovia.

Yes, they use the Barovian Calender because Barovia was the first domain in the demiplane. Some domains/cultures have a secondary calender, such as the druids of Forlorn who still keep their Forfarian Calender, but these are secondary to use of the Barovian Calender.
