Title: Orphanage - Western Outskirts - Gossip
Post by: Ruxandra on July 26, 2007, 02:43:30 AM
The governess, her sister, and staff all speak of a young, native woman of sizable proportion who seems to visit periodically. They relate that she never gives a name, but seems to have a vast knowledge of the old ways and tends the children's hurts in a gentle manner, often entreating them to a dessert she calls 'trifle' during her visits, leaving allowances under their pillows as they sleep, and making sizable donations to the governess.

The governess recounts that often the woman seems pained as much as gladdened by her visits, but remains otherwise tight-lipped on the matter. The waif Sergei seems to know her.

A recent arrival to the Mists, having stated she grew up in the home herself, is often seen coming and going from Orphanage, playing with the children or chatting with the Governess.

She is often seen in a fiery red dress, wrapped in an old worn cloak as she braves the fog to head to the building.

Across from the orphanage, it is said that there is a infection of a moss-like parasite spreading among the peasant population along with the guardsman of a boyar estate known for its brandy. Along side these rumors are of killings and executions for seemingly trivial things and the like, some say this is a cover for the moss infection, and some say the crimes are too harsh. In relation to these two events, it has been also said there is a cure for this, but it was repeatedly refused by the boyar, thinking the workers were just being lazy and slow. Zachea knows more about the moss than anyone at the moment and the populace is warned that should any see any strange moss on people or objects, to report to him immediately.

The children whispers among themselves about the beautiful woman that comes everyday to the orphanage, she speaks with Anica, the rumored baby killer and goes in her room with many heavy package under her arm, maybe candies and presents! The children whispers among themselves in quasi jealousy until the cheerful but quiet lady offers them flowers and candies during most of her visits, and that the knight that accompanies her often play with the children outside, teaching them how to use a sword with sticks for props.

Anyone who ask Lady Invich would receive the answer that Melanie is teaching the child to read and write, and the packages contains books, quills and stacks of papers.

The day after the knight began teaching the children the basics of combat, the orphans have begun a little mock-war amongst themselves.  Bruises have become common.

Abruptly, the "Stick swords" have gone missing, (most likely ending up in the fireplace) and all the children seem upset about losing their new favorite pastime.

A female child was found dead near the peak of night, shortly before a dark form was seen sprinting out of the orphanage with unnatural speed, moments before a band of three adventurers rushing down into the basement of the building. The poor orphan girl was mutilated to an extreme, her face contorted into that of horror, drained, crude letters drawn onto her stomach and down the side of her leg in her own blood.

Surveying the orphanage from the nearby hillside the dark clad woman dismisses the
raggy and filthy messenger with a barely perceptible wink of her fragile velvet-gloved hand.

The hilarious conflict raging between a bunch of demented stiffs and ... the local
... 'property' ... had just gotten personal.

Cloaking herself in the ambient shades she strides downhill, quietly vanishing into the arising mists.

Celurion was well loved by the children at the orphanage, they enjoyed pulling on his pointy ears, the stories he would tell, and the kind relief of hunger and sickness he brought to them.
They were shocked when after stepping out from his last vist they heard his outburst of cursing and swears as the dead girl quite literally landed at his feet.
Immediately following the horror, the body was quickly removed, and burried in the Morninglord's tradition, to prevent rising as unliving and tainting the cemetery.

Given that every monster and his mother and his third cousin twice removed seems to love eating the children at that specific orphanege, the children have taken to never leaving the orphanege to play in groups less then three, never leaving the yard, and locking themselves inside at sunset.

Following the horrible attack against the orphanage farmers whisper of seeing dark clad figures moving about at night near the orphanage. Th next morning all entrances had wreaths hung upon them. Visitors were told the wreaths were placed there mourning the loss of the child. Closer inspection of the wreaths show that each of the vines seems to run into the other making it hard to tell where one stops and the other starts. The visitors also speak of having a feeling of being watched while at the orphanage even when there was no one around.

A loud scream of terror was heard from the Orphanage in the morning, as ten children were found murdered in there beds. All ten of there throats were slit to what seem of a perfect cut for a simple kill. The ones who slept in bunk beds seem to have move a bit as if  they aimed to run, tho there throats seem to have still been hit with the same perfect cut. Most were in shock for they never heard a peek from any of the children the whole night...

More rumors circulated after a large group of outlanders with one acclaimed native amidst them entered the Orphanage following the night of the murders later in the evening seeking details.  They investigated the upstairs of Mina's mansion in hopes of learning something of the possible identity of the killer or killers.  Though little was shown as evidence there was much speculation to the possibility of witchery or vrolock as there was no sign or word during the occurence which led many to speculate the sinister arts of witches or the mist shaping of vampires.

Rumors spread that laborers at the farm across the orphanage made a gruesome discovery... a whole family seemed to be slaughtered. Rumors spread that some bodies were torn apart with limbs separated from the rest of body... Some say that some victims were poisoned and that some that were found dead seemed to be intact.

There is also a rumor of some weird looking circle drawn on the floor with blood. It seemed like the circle was drawn clumsily.

Some could think that the family was consorting with devils and they were punished for their evil witchery...

But what is the truth of what happened, no one really knows...

A dozen new children are brought to the Orphanage's doors, crying and looking terrified, by guards and servants of the von Zeklos Keep.  Much to the horror of many in the Outskirts explosions rocked the area near the Morninglord temple. A short while later smoke was seen to rise from the orphanage and many rushed to help fearing the worst. Upon arrival the children and workers were found to have exited the building due to all of the smoke. The ladies of the house meet all questions with explanations of a fire that almost got out of hand. All were assured that they and the children were fine and the orphanage's doors and windows were opened to allow the smoke to escape.

A few children spoke of a dark cloaked woman dragging a twisted metal object from the house before leaving down the road.

The natives next door make wards against evil, shake their heads and go back to their buisness with a simple "Damn Outlanders."

"Protect the weak, unpopular, young and injured", a piece of oath, binding promise and duty every Watchknight is to follow. And as the word of ever vigilant Helm is, his faithful are expected to never sacrifice the life of a child for their own or anyone else's.

As so, a man wearing the gauntlet symbol of Helm - introducing himself as Delarion de'Ardo - has been standing on guard inside the Orphanage, hired by Madam Mina, seeming determined to protect the orphanage from any further harm. He'd smile faintly at the children, little minding their tricks and kicks, only wearing the heavy armor by night, which is when the calm and friendly expression makes way for one of determination and hardness.

The morning had begun as any other, yet ended much differently.  Two children are said to have gone missing, though some speak of a fate much, much worse.  Blood is seen splattered over the grass of the front lawn.  The trail of blood leads up the dirt sidewalk yet once it reaches the road it seems to have disappeared other than a few splotches here and there leading towards the west.

Some speak of a bad omen; a stalker lurking about at night, trying to lure innocent children away from the building.  A strange man was seen just the night before.  His stature was short but his build appeared stocky.  He claimed to be dropping off a donation from Kathryn but quickly disappeared once another individual happened upon the scene.

Locals mutter as the white robed individuals hurry back & forth 'tween the old Hospice on Starda Sobolan & the orphenage beyond the western outskirts, ferrying food & drink, along with a little wine.  Preperations for a feast seem to be gathering momentum for those who were constantly on the front line during the recent plague.

If stopped and asked a reason the hospitaliers only reply  "Why for Litha, of course"

Quote
June 22nd celebrates Litha (again with
some variation of the date), Midsummer as it is
known to most people and marks the longest day
and shortest night of the year. Some temples
organize festivals for this day that involve pole
dancing, feasts, dances, costume parades and
other festivities and entertainments. Again these
are held in smaller villages and thorps
throughout the southern Core and rarely enter
larger settlements. The Inquisition has
forbidden these festivities in Tepest for the last
few years. However, some settlements hold
smaller celebrations of their own in village
squares, under the guidance of the Inquisition, of
course. Though the celebrations are no longer
openly dedicated to Hala, many people are
happy to see the festivities when they come
round each year.

Children are left traumatized as they awake in the morning to see bodies rendered, left on the floor in pools of their own blood. A source mentions the wounds of the bodies were the work of a war scythe. Further investigation follows.

A member of the Crows -or once-member- is seen making a visit to the orphanage; she spends some time playing with the children and their dolls, and laughter rings out for at least one afternoon around the building which has seen so many ordeals. A little brightness is brought to a group of children who would otherwise, no doubt, be destined for misery.

Rani, one of the girls, is filled with fright the coming day, however, and loudly proclaims to all her friends, as if by rote: "we shouldn't sneak out at night, even if we really want to, and we see stuff we like and meet nice people."

A young woman in black clothing has been seen visiting the orphans from time to time. Occasionally, she brings cookies or other forms of sweets, but never stays long.

In the early hours of the morning, a group of four can be seen outside the orphanage. Two take up positions facing the road, standing watch. The other two kneel before the doors and windows, sprinkling holy water, stringing up garlic, sketching with chalk, and praying fervently as the snow falls around them.

One familiar with the local community would recognize one of the praying men as dressed in the blue and white of the Halans. The other wears the white tabard and red cross of the Christian Templars.

They finish just before dawn. Three of the men walk off toward the city, while the fourth jogs eastward. He returns within the hour and begins stringing up more garlic, sprinkling more holy water, and reciting more prayers.

As he finishes, he pats one of the children on the head, offers a kind smile, and says, "Walk in the Light."

In the hours just before nightfall, a black-haired half-elf in white garb bearing the sigil of a crucifix carries a large satchel into the orphanage. He emerges some time later and pauses alongside the hills that ring the building. He stoops, striking a candle and nestling it in a small alcove among the hills near the road before kneeling beside it.

As the oranges and grays of dusk shoot across the sky, he rises, draws his cloak about him, and returns to the city.

A Gundarakite man all covered in burn-scars has been a frequent visitor to the orphanage lately. He mostly sits and watches the children play, speaking to them on occasion regarding their interests.
Sometimes, he staggers outside in the throes of a panic attack, gasping for air and wearing tears in his eyes. No one seems to have any idea what might have triggered these incidents.

A Barovian girl with peasantly clothes is seen frequenting the Orphanage, with books and the like carried under one arm. She's rather unassuming, save for a kind smile towards the children, and striking russet hair. Reading for the children, it seems.

Two morninglordians are said to have visited the orphanage this afternoon with baskets full of meats, cheese and turnips. The duo also spent sometime speaking with some of the children there before departing off and leaving the donation of food for the winter to come.

It is said a barovian man in a blue cloak and bandana arrived to the orphanage. Silently he set crates filled with toys and meat for them. The man spoke but a few wordd to the caretakers and merely said.

"For the future of our children of Vallaki."

With a smile the man departed and seem to head to the local woods. Some saying the man hunting and working hard alone. It seems he would be working till old noapte came.

It is said the man in the blue cape known as Valentin Krezkov brought a heavy crate of food supplies, winter clothing, and toys for the children of the orphanage yesterday. He stayed recounting tales ofnold customs and barovian folk tales. He especially told tales of the famous Garda who defend their city. When noapte came the man left while the children were sleeping. Conversation could be heard beyond the front door before silence.

As the night rolls in, a simple yet elegant wooden memorial emerges just outside the orphanage. Its details are as follows:
Quote
An elegantly crafted wooden cross stands resolute within the embrace of the earth. Graceful floral motifs adorn its edges, tracing a delicate pattern. At its heart rests the emblem of the Rosy Dawn, the Morninglord. Beneath this symbol, the following words are inscribed in the language of Balok:

"From death, life. There is always another morning. In the dawn, beauty reigns and the way is clearer

May the innocence lost on this solemn day find solace in the comfort of Your Enfolding Embrace. May they discover illumination within Your Unending Dawn.

Never forgotten.

May Thy Lips Be Cleansed!"

A wonderful play was presented to the children and guests of the orphanage. The sound of laughter and merriment echoed well into the evening.
