Title: RP items for the new character area ghost
Post by: Freydaelyn on September 28, 2020, 04:11:42 PM
I was thinking it would be nice to have a few more RP items in the new character zone to buy. My thought was simple things that make sense for various places to be taken from like the generic book item and an umbrella. nothing huge obviously but they could add to the RP of earlier level characters like a wizard actually having a "spell book" from the start or even a noble taken from Toril as they where on a stroll.

Definitely would like to see the options expanded. Along with your suggestions, the VFX bandana would be nice to see too, for people who want to be sure it won't clash with their outfit when they do go and buy it.

And the two various tricorn hats.

Ask for tricorne hats for your werewolf AMPC during next NCE, and gift it as a special item.

Also a lot of the generic tool items.

Brooms, shovels, etc.

I would also suggest potentially more mundane instruments. There is currently no generic horn available but others are

Some sort of damaged flintlock (with heavy drawbacks) plus gunpowder and bullets, if possible

Considering we have an NCE around the corner and that would one shot every character lvl 4 and below I don't see a reason to implement this.

Is this not a _huge_ reason to impliment this?

On a more serious note, would it be more pratical to impliment after the NCE event?

Won't Gearlings enjoy some competition from a bandit group located in the Black Market which would steal their intel and make a poorer but more powerful version of the flintlock, after all ?

I agree for "after NCE event" , so to say.

I am firmly against powder weapons in the OOC room for the following reasons:

1. There will be more NCEs, the issue will remain.

2. Powder weapons will get you in trouble in Vallaki and there's not a lot of opportunity for new players to learn about that before turning up waving one around.

I would like to keep firearms as aspirational for starting PCs.  I would like to point out too that I have the experience of making a PC specifically to be a conscript in the Dementlieu events last year.  1 backfire is very damaging, possibly lethal to starting PCs

From a mechanics standpoint it's just not appropriate. You're just as likely to one shot another player as you are to one shot yourself in Barovia's intended level range.

Even if we ignore those issues, you wouldn't be able to afford it. The lowest quality pistols are several hundred gold and as a lvl 2 PC you just don't have that. Even then you still need powder and shot which in any usable quantity is going to me more expensive than the pistol itself.

Last, from a point of lore, the flintlock represents a picnnacle of scientific and engineering achievement in the more developed areas of the core. It just not appropriate for Barovia. It also presents one of the attractions for going to dementlieu. It's not really fair to cheapen that niche.

If you want to make a group of gun runners to trade in an illegal market in Barovia by all means go ahead. I've done it before and it's lots of fun!

Spoiler: show

To add onto what Philos said, the vast majority of DnD settings do not have pistols, so it would make little sense to add them to the starting shop.

What about the other items suggested EO?

What about the other items suggested EO?

They will be considered on a case by case basis. Though consider as well that this NPC's inventory isn't to serve as an exhaustive list of RP props. It remains better to have the bulk of it obtainable in-game.
