Title: The Mists
Post by: DM Cataclysm on August 10, 2018, 02:16:03 PM
I'm not sure if the following are bugs, intentional changes, or both of those mixed with some bad luck - but the Mists have been operating quite a bit differently as of late.

1 - Most domains were previously accessible by going a certain direction in the Mists. This has recently changed and most things are in different places now. I can't tell if they're fixed in different places or if they're rotating at random. I didn't see anything in the changelogs about this, so I thought it was worth mentioning.

2 - The Deserted City map continues to terrorize. The majority of players can't pass this map and it's not really possible to fight your way through, since the oozes will respawn seemingly indefinitely. This often ends up in the middle of a route that could take you someplace and then makes that place unreachable, as you can't go through the map or get around it. It effectively acts as encountering a boulder to all but a few people.

3 - There are a lot of blocked maps. In many layouts, you can't get very far before you're blocked in. I've put the current layout of the mists below - but you're essentially blocked into 2 maps. The Mists also don't seem to be resetting on a particularly regular basis. Sometimes the layout will stay for a very extended period of time and others it will switch several times in a short period. Not sure if that is also intentional, but when you have a layout like today and it stays fixed for a long period - it kills any opportunity to travel for a long while.

Now, in the past when I've mentioned this stuff - I know a lot of people tend to jump in and go. . ."But the mists are supposed to be confusing! They're supposed to be dangerous! You aren't supposed to have any certainty!" I completely support that within reason, but I think we need to give some room for practicality. Considering that Perfidus and many unique areas within the Mists are only available by traveling through it - I think it would be reasonable to tweak things slightly so it was easier to get through without getting constantly blocked. Most of the times people log on, they don't have hours to spend wandering around or waiting for maps to reset - and given the server population now, it would be great to be able to more reliably make use of these areas since it is often hard to find a place to adventure.

I'm not sure coding-wise, what a good fix would be - but when the Mists were first introduced, you could get to your destination almost every time you entered. Sometimes it would take you (way way way) longer than others, but the opportunity was there. Each time the functionality of the Mists have changed, it seems to narrow the chance of being able to make it where you're trying to go.

I'll try to post some additional layouts that aren't functional as I encounter them.

1) Some were changed to properly align with the exit area in the domain. Expect more changes since some are still misaligned. Once done they wob’t change again.
2) The oozes that spawned were toned down and they repeat less often now. They should be manageable with a party properly equipped (ie: non metal equipment or gold/electrum gear).
3) We didn’t make changes to that so it may be more of a perception issue.

I’m working on a few more generic mist areas right now but it’s a slow process so no ETA. Overall the mists should be unpredictable and hard to navigate. We don’t plan to change that nor make Perfidus more accessible.

Some more feedback:

-With some luck the new mist areas will be added next update or soon after. They are generic four direction areas, which will decrease the likelihood of oubliettes appearing.
-Oozes and rust monsters will soon no longer fully dissolve items, instead just rendering them unusable until repaired by a smith.
