Title: Vallaki - Nobles' District
Post by: JironGhrad on September 20, 2006, 07:29:54 PM
In passing a noble lady speaking to a gentleman regarding the rule of the city "It's said that the Romulich family seeks to supplant the Ionelius family as the Burgomeister of Vallaki.  How they expect to succeed since the Ionelius family is much larger is hard to say."

...Blown up, the statue of Stradh Von Zarovich exploded into pieces with one of the most violent explosions ever witnessed in Vallaki- Nobles speak of gathered crowd of Outlanders near the statue- witnesses speak of two particular men- sons of ''Gundar''...

...Rumors of Vallaki guard seeking two particular men- maybe more, but talks of Outlanders involved in this scandal already begin to be the hot topic on the lips of Outraged Nobles...

The harpist at the Blue Water whispers excitedly to the pianist, "Three masked people approached Lieutenant Johnus the other night, and claimed to be the "Sons of Gundar" who blew up the Count's Statue..."  The pianist replies, equally excited, "The Lieutenant came down and reassigned all the guards on duty to street patrol and replaced them with others, he mentioned it being their second failure."

The Bishop descends from his upstairs suite; his cape, fit for the Count, slides gently down the stairs; at his arm, a certain lady dressed fit for a countess.  He smiles to Lieutenant Johnus before they join the nobles in the parlor.  Some of the noblewomen gossip idly concerning the identity of his new companion...

This same woman is seen speaking crazily to herself and others about someone named Carmac, and demons stalking her.  Some of the noblewomen wonder why the Bishop allows her in his company, then think perhaps he is available again.

Due to the awful instances of rampant crime, the nobles are demanding that the city begin registering all outlanders and Gundarakites and establish checkpoints where the guards will check those passing for suspicious behaviors and possessions

Many Nobles gathered in front of the fountain speak of a Leprous stenched man cursing the whore Madison; several others speak of similar occurances, unfortunate ones claiming the contracting a disease after having slept with the ''infamous'' whore. Wives seem to wonder, yet few men exchange alarmed glares at the shouting accusations.

Rumour begin to spread that a merchant named Markov is trying to match his daughter Tatyana with a man of noble birth, to make matters worse she comes without a dowry. The whole matter would seem ridiculous were it not for her incredible beauty, her high level of achievement in the arts, and her exotic light hair colour , only seen a few times each generation among true Barovians. Many young noblemen wonder if there parents would accept such a match.

Rumour has it that an old tradition has been revived. Some of the young women of the Noble quarter (almost all having studied in other countries) have revived the Black Umbrella Club, a civic minded social club of unknown but ancient origins. It is known that Tatyana Markova has just been made treasurer and that the club is very focused on its "Slum Beautificaton" project. The leading goal at the moment is a statue of Lord Stahd himslef to uplift the people of the slums, subject to city approval of course. Social events and charitable goals will be all the talk for the young men and women of the district.

//OOC this is a ficticious club with no members, it seemed a useful rp tool for the moment and I shall try to make it seem real . If there are other Barovian female aristocrats out there that are interested in such a thing, please let me know, we can meet for tea. I am hoping maybe I can have some npc members so that it is "real"?

Rumour has it that the recent collapse in mink prices has all but ruined the Markov family which was finally returning to a respectable footing. Due to the setbacks they will no longer be buying furs and a dowry for young Miss Markova is now unlikely. It seems that negotiations for her wedding to Petru Romulich have been called off and many wonder if it more to do with her recent association with Bishop Cornelius rather than the families poor fortunes.

On another note, the Black Umbrella Club recently declared at their last meeting that the Slum Beautification project will be abandoned. It has become clear that they simply would not be able to appreciate what was to be done for them. They will therefore now focus their attention on aiding the poor orphans of Barovia. An auction will soon be held to raise money for this noble cause, all donations are to be given to the Treasurer Miss Tatyana Markova .

Word spreads through the small, insular town of Vallaki of strange new arrivals in the village. A female Anchorite from Mordentshire arrived by wagon at the Cathedral of Ezra ("Servants of the Borcan bitch the lot of them!" huffs more then one old itinerant oppressed Barovian), travelling alone except for an eight year old boy. This boy can often be seen wandering about the upper districts of town, doing such boyish things as chasing butterflies and looking for mischief. The people of Vallaki bregrudgingly have to admit the boy seems charming and polite, and the young women cluck together that the adorable lad will be quite the catch in eight or ten years. Every day without fail however, the lad returns to the Ezrite Cathedral for tutoring under the Anchorite, whose name seems to be Annallee Weddenborough. The Ezrite herself can often be seen wandering about town, spreading Ezra's word and fellowship.

Due to the fact she's a lady, the Men of Vallaki manage to refrain from spitting on her.

Nobles and Guards alike speak of a poor man, near death, being removed from the rubble of the smoldering ruins of the barracks by the Anchorites of Ezra.

The Anchorites, in their green robes, but ash worn and torn from labor, are at the site working to remove the rubble, as well as praying for the fallen and their families.

Its believed the last survivor was found, but the arduous and horrific task of collecting body parts, clearing the shifting and dangerous rubble, and tending to the spiritual crisis of those who need mending, keeps the Church of Ezra diligent.

It is expected that a ceremony to honor the dead and suffering will take place.

All around the nobles' district, into the wealthy homes, the parks, the bank and especially the Blue Water Inn, men and women alike are seen gossiping more than usual. Between two chuckles and a few "I told you so", they seem to discuss of the latest rumor. It seems that the newest prominent outlander guard, Vasham, is in fact a vampire...and if that were not enough, some add that he may also fancy men. "A queer vampire!" one says, "Surely, that must be a jest, but he does have those unnaturally white hair and this gaze!" responds another. And such conversations are common and seem to be the hot topic of the day, most dismissing the rumor as an elaborate prank and a clever joke.

At the same time, others speak of how a high ranking corporal woman was seduced, perhaps even charmed, by one of those fey cultists of the Morninglord. They were seen together sipping wine and discussing for many hours in the Blue Water Inn out of all places, a symbol of Barovian pride. Some say that the guard undressed for the fey and that they may even have spent even more private time together. Such gossips stop abruptly though when a guard patrol passes by only to start again a few seconds later.

Rumors of the Knighting of Known Witch Vincent Vasil Stravokov spread amongst Vallaki's nobilty, several have immediately cut ties with the Von Zeklos after the incident reaching words in most Blue Blood Circles. Adding to the recent undead Claims derision by the local peasantry, that believe the Zeklos Lands have been corrupted by the Dilisnya poisoner influence within. Known Witch Stravokov figures on everyone's lips. Many wonder how much longer the Von Zeklos will continue to surprise by having known vrajas and Imortij acting as prominent figures in their land, and how much longer will it take for the Count himself to notice...

The event is seen as an affront to the Burgomaster of Vallaki himself, present at the flogging given to the new Zeklos Knight, this comes after some tensions, some say, between the Vallaki Dilisnya  and the Zeklos Dilisnya who seem to been having a fall out. Nobles view this as a public shame to Nicolai Ionelus, whose son is directly involved in those events.

Those of the Dilisnya Cult who were seen under escort of the Vallaki garda on their way to the trial, were seen many hours later walking freely back to their rectory. While there had not yet been any statement of the Burgomaster’s made public, it was easily deduced that those who had been accused by Lord Zeklos of slander and treason, were found not guilty.

Rumors of the trial spin left and right. Some talk about how Erik Draven had been accused of stealing the body of his own companion, Vasten Fynolt. Words such as ‘incompetence’ and ‘unprepared’ are often used about Vallaki when talking about the representatives of the boyar at the trial.

Some swear that had it not been for Lord Zeklos’ knighting of the branded witch and Vallaki outcast Vincent von Stavakov, that the verdict may likely have fallen in the boyar’s favor. The Burgomaster is reported to have asked the Zeklos’ Special Envoy at the trial that if he warned Lord Zeklos of the dangerous Stavokov, just as Nell Ward warned him of the imjortii Marle Winterlass, would he too then be charged with slander and treason?

The Burgomaster himself, many witnesses claim, even went so far as to name Marle Winterlass as an imjortii and threat to Barovia.
Some wonder if Lord Zeklos has fallen prey to the influence of the undead Dilisnya poisonner, Marle Winterlass.  While some others may blame the Dilisnyas for everything. No matter what side of the fence one may be on, what is certain is that the conflict between Zeklos Keep and Vallaki is escalating.

After a quiet night of rest Ruxandra Stanga is seen leaving the Bluewater Inn via private carriage.  Many whisper that the trauma of being falsely accused of murder after risking her life to aid the guard against an attack of smugglers emotionally drained her.  Others fear that her failure to recover the guard captives of the smugglers on top of the loss of her baby have drove her to near madness and caused her to lose any lack of judgment and rationality that she ever posessed.  Needless to say it is certain that she will be returning to the Winter House owned by her family in Immol where she will be accomponied by her husband, Dragomir.

Murder is on the lips of numerous residents throughout Vallaki, namely those who reside in the Nobles District.  Word spreads like wildfire that the shady dealer of goods, Gavril Lanovich, was killed in his home.  The gossipers say that the man was found in his bedroom by his young wife, laying in a pool of blood and covered in multiple stab wounds.   It’s believed that Gavril’s downfall may have been the fact that he rarely kept good on his word and made a habit of dealing in illegal goods.  The coin was good but the string of angry customers may be to blame for his premature death.  Members of the Lanovich family have stated that they will be hiring outside sources to investigate the untimely death.  The young widow known as Esmé has been said to have taken up residence in the Broken Bell, refusing to stay at the manor she once called her home let alone go back to gather up her belongings.

Word of a cruel, gruesome display of punishment carried on by Lieutenant Elton Belovich spread on the lips of the collective blue blood peasantry. The event wasn't without its lot of controversies and developments; amongst them, the murder of a Barovian farmer in the crowd and what seemed to be rebellious protests, as bottled flammable cocktails were flung by unknown onlookers near the crowd.

Those attending were served a right hand man, Gundarakite bear of a man as the proceedings opened - Zceteny Kovaczs. The brute was severely beaten by the Lieutenant with a stick, before his right arm was sawed at the elbow in front of a blood-pleading crowd. The brute showed incredible resilience to the painful punishment, much to the awe of those gathered and frustration of the guard.

Peasantry could see the humiliation of Petru Romulich as he weeped and begged for mercy; silently confessing his crimes, much to the enjoyment of the crowd and the Lieutenant himself.

The crowd dispersed at the coming of dusk, leaving the Gundarakite man dead. The body, however, was not seen there in the coming morning...

Word spreads quickly as the work goes underway upon the Refuge of the Fifth light - the bastion of the Ezran faith in Vallaki and the whole of eastern Barovia. For some weeks prior there was much competition between some of the local guilds of masons over who would get the contract on the additions and updates to the temple. Eventually it was settled that the Three Hammers group would attend to the task. While some of the common people might outright revile Ezrans as quislings for Ivana Boritsi - most normal people see them as any other priesthood - liers and manipulators and pay them not much mind. Though with the Burgomaster being one of the number and the general spiritual outlook of the people of Vallaki, the faith has began another period of growth.

Along with this a trickle of pilgrims have began to make their way to the grey city from elsewhere in Barovia, further east, and even from Invidia and Borca in the west to have their chance to gaze upon the Refuge of the Fifth Light's own Icon of Danzig, said to depict Ezra the Martyr, her ascension to the Ezra the Guardian, and her first servant Yakov the Acolyte,
these strangers might get strange looks from the serfs and free-farmers beyond the walls but the merchants and inn-keeps of the city have only the Ezrites and their Misty Maiden to thank for the seasonal swell in their pockets... at least for now.

Theft has begun to spike up tremendously in the noble district as reports of missing jewelry with wedding bands and family heirlooms often made out of gold as the most notable kept flooding for the last couple of days with the total estimated to be in the tens of thousands of fleeced goods. While the nearby pawn shop may have been given scrutiny they don't seem to have any of these goods on them if they were to be searched.

Speculations range from one person doing this to it being coordinated among other thieves while others say the fey did it.

No arrests seem to have been made yet and no family ever got their jewelry returned to them.

The recent weeks have seen an increased presence of the Vallaki Garda within the walls of the Noble's District. Travelers seeking to enter through either of the main gates would find themselves under the scrutiny of the Garda and questioned regarding their business. Those belonging to the district or whose purpose has been deemed acceptable pass with no further trouble. Those who do not meet the expectation of the Garda find their weapons confiscated and returned only upon departure if they are not turned aside entirely.

Individuals recognized as the faithful of Ezra work alongside the Vallaki Garda to confirm the passage of those seeking to worship at the Refuge of the Fifth Light. These people are encouraged to conduct their matters succinctly.

Additional security has been posted at the Blue Water Inn and a guard is observed stationed outside each exit. Within, few rooms remain available after the earlier arrival of a large procession and tell has it that these people were prominent enough to staff their own uniformed guard.

As the sun rises a halfling warden exists the refuge of fifth light with a bucket, mop and rags and begins to clean messages written in blood on the temple walls before the city's hustle and bustle begins for the day.

[A startled Toret Roman Tobeichik comes out of the Refuge of the Fifth Light, suddenly removing a particular notice before it caught the attention of the Nobles' District's denizens. There are rumors circulating what the contents of this notice involved, some claim it was a special ceremony or an unusual wedding announcement. Regardless, whatever it was it no longer remains by the Refuge of the Fifth Light's doorsteps.]

Rumors swirl of a new resident taking up a room in the Bluewater in. A Dementliuse noble by the name of 'Lady Beauregard', the first night of her stay is marked by bright burning, flickering candles and some form of Mordentish ritual chant. When the white haired woman emerges in the morning, she is accompanied by a black cat that no-one can seem to remember arriving with her...

The Templars sworn to the Refuge of the Fifth Light and volunteers among the Ezrite Congregation are seen throughout the day cleaning the exterior of the building. This duty troubles the dutiful men and women as more than once are their efforts sabotaged; the defacement they had sought to remove returning after they had returned within. Surprisingly, neither the individuals of the affluent district nor the Garda would provide any answers to the inquiring faithful.

The vandalism is swift with rotten vegetables, decaying fish, mud mixed with various unmentionables, and crude scrawling messages of hate. The condemnations dismiss the faith as Dilisnya Poisoners and demand their return to Borca.

Shortly after dawn, a number of Vallaki's guardsmen enter the Adamachi Brewery - located just outside the Nobles' District. The idle susurration of the Warehouses is soon accompanied by the sound of a clearly rigorous search, with the commotion lasting until just until noon. Afterward, the group leave and pass through the northern gate up toward the Burgomaster's game reserve.

Throughout the course of the afternoon, the Garda seem to scour through every inch of the woodland in a determined investigation. Eventually, after a brief conversation at the reservation's entrance, they return back to the confines of the city's walls. Whether they found what they were searching for is not yet certain.

The newest Warden to the Refuge of the Fifth Light is seen around the disctrict tending to the gardens of the temple and the public park. Despite the frigid weather she works with her hands to rid them of what weeds she can.

She is seen greeting the wealthy residents, passing guards, and church goers alike, reminding them of the coming service, to be her first sermon as Warden, urging them to come.

At dawn, a consistent flow of people have been seen flowing in the Ezrite Rectory during the whole day. At times, even the thick walls could not contain a few yells, some of which to bring the calm down.

After two night and three day cycles, finally the now large crowd crowd trickles out, still discussing things in ushered voices by small groups while walking away.

At the crack of dawn a copper haired woman with a Richemuloise accent arrives in Valaki. At her waist hang a pair of stakes, and shortly after she takes a room at the Blue Water Inn, her luggage arrives in the form of a wagon of neatly bound books. Occasionally when she moves, the glint of silver.

A monster hunter is in town.

A column of a half-dozen mounted Garda, some fresh-faced youths and other scarred veterans, makes procession from the eastern gates come first light of dawn. They tow behind them a man in shackles, half-dragged in their dusty wake. Some of the townsfolk mark the man's name as Sergei Anton Vadu, recently disgraced member of Burgomaster Svari Ionelus's militia. They ride hard along the Svalich road, and are not seen again come Noapte. When they finally return, Vadu is not in their company. The condemned man is never seen again.

A quartet of men wearing black and red regalia with the emblem of some fierce bird of prey make their way to the Blue Water Inn, one astride a fierce warhorse and wearing plate mail with a rattling plume of metal at the back. Thereafter, most of them depart, leaving a single man behind. He keeps to himself, enjoying the occasional glass of tsuika and giving little cause for trouble or concern, despite the occasional dark look the locals give to the brand burned into his forehead.

Some might see numerous Garda moving about the district, buckets, rags and linen sacks. Some might even see them scrubbing down the walls of buildings within the district.

Though if anything is getting clean, is near impossible to tell against the battering rain.

As dusk canopies the Barovian sky and the well-to-do locals begin to part ways for the day, a hooded, wounded figure in white and gold trudges into the northern gate of the city. He moves swiftly and with purpose, two mangled bodies tied securely to his own. Disregarding any stares from the Barovians he passes, he presses on against the darkness and through the city, toward the Sanctuary of Eternal Dawn.

Talks of the festival still buzz throughout the wealthy caste of Vallaki, with many gossiping about the attendees and the affairs that went on during the festive day. What sticks out the most, though, and buzzes the most, is the sight of Svari Ionelus and Florica Romulich together throughout the day, seemingly muttering to one another and exchanging pleasantries.
