Angered whispers regarding the current events at the Noble's district can also be heard from the mouth of the outraged nobles grimacing from the stench.

The guards joke to each other about the prostitute Madison O'Reilly....

"Aye, brought in just yesterday....  hasnt stopped hollering since!  That ones got some spirit to be sure!" one says with a chuckle.

She hears his words, and goes off on her rant again,

"You fools!! Do you know who I am?!?!  Your all going to be fired!!!  Do you hear me?!! Fired!!!" she continues to shriek angrily down the hall, and then screams as a rat tries to bite her expensive boot.

"Shutup whore," they answer.... "Your time for sentencing will come."

"oooooouuugh!" she yells stomping her foot.  " Stop calling me that!! My name, is Madison, and its Ms O'Reilly to -you- lot!  you dont know who your messing with!!  You just -wait-!!!"

They laugh, and she continues to scream obscenities at them only stopping when her voice goes out.

Rumors speak of the Wolfman being finally burnt in the middle of the Night, few assisted to the burning which occured quietly and without too much ruckus in front of the Citadel.

Rumors speak of increased watch over the Citadel's walls, some mention several squads of Night patrol being particularly active that night.

Throughout one of the coldest days in March, after the rumor that a rebel had been captured and was being held within the Citadel became common knowledge, some within the peasantry begin anxiously asking militia men when they can expect the execution to take place.  Those most anxious to see the rebel’s neck snap are those who have lost loved ones over the years of ethnic bloodshed.  Some among the Barovians demand that they be given the right to cast stones at the Gundarakite on his death march.  Some argue that the man should be humiliated and then hung before his family, and before all the Gundarakite youth to set an example.

The Gundarakite families who live in Vallaki quietly go about their business, doing their best to avoid any attention from the Barovians, especially those families with ties to the militia.  The long drawn out winter is hard enough on Vallaki’s second class citizens, the scorn of Barovians.  For some Gundarakites, they dread for their own safety more than anything else anytime a rebel is captured.  For other Gundarakites though, behind locked doors, and only among family, do they celebrate, dance, and sing to pay homage to a fallen hero.  As for outlanders, how the Gundarakites feel about the impending execution of a freedom fighter, or a rebel, depending on your politics or ethics, can only be known by those in the strictest of confidence.

There seems to be an unusuall amount of acitivity around the citadel. Soldiers are drilling and the smith's seems to work dubble the amount. After several days the vallakians starts to whisper to each other about war. But who would we invande? One man asks. But who would invade us? Asks another. The Invidians, says an old woman.
Most people laugh at the idea of a war, saying nobody would dare to invade Barovia.

A neat business styled letter is delivered to the secretary at the Citadel Burgomasters Office:

Cordially addressed to his Honor Burgomaster and others to whom it pertains-

I write to you representing the wishes of one Oleg Ilych Vespilarkov. Mr. Vespilarkov is, by trade, a hunter of wild game and a butcher who specializes in selling quality cuts of healthy meat. Recently displaced (like many outlanders), Mr. Vespilarkov is unique in that his only desire is to settle in Vallaki as any proper citizen and ply his trade peacefully and legally. Despite his challenges , he has expressed the desire to use one of the unclaimed stalls in the market place and aquire a liscence for the legal dispensation of his goods. I have undertaken to help him in this endeavor, as unfortunatly Mr. Vespilarkov is (despite his many other qualitie) a poor speaker and unaccustomed to the local tongue or trade languages as of yet.

I would most appreciate a response at your earlyest convenience and I can often be found at the Ladies Rest inn or other associated outlands.

Cordially,
Katalyn Schoppen

"This is my s+uff.

The bag contained various Vallaki guard equipment; a halberd, armour, clothing, a shield and a longsword.

// Was no one around. Dropped on the floor there.

Rumors runs among the guards returning from their day of rest, that old Petre Chomski was finally dead, the rumors spreading like dust that he broke his neck while attacking a scarecrow in a nearby field, drunk like a pig and smelling like one. A good soul grabbed his body and buried him deep enough so he's never heard about again. Some guards remembers serving him with pride and honor keeping quiet about it as others drink to his soul, may it burn in hell and his body rot to the worms.

A young barovian girl of about 15 was seen approaching the citadel and entering the front jail area. The guards watched and looked her over carefully. The only things visablly on her that could even be remotely considered a weapon were a staff and a small satchel containing a scapal. Also on her were various bags of bandages and other medical supplies.

"Whatta ya want girl?" One of the guards said eyeing her learring.

the girl brushed a lock of hair from her face. "..I..I wanted to speak to someone of hte guard. To offer my services as a surgeon and healer." She said.

The guard gave a slight sour face. "..Ya one of those cultist healers?" He asked

The girl shook her head no firmly making her own sour face at the very notion." Nu uh sir, my mother Anica taught me how to treat wounds naturally, and make folks better. I do not use that cultist stuff. Makes the body weak if you ask me." She replied. "...If someone I could speak to is busy I'll come back later." She offered

"..Whats your name girly? So I can tell my superiors." The guard asked.

"Florence sir, Florence Chisca." She said. "I live out on the eastern farmlands with my father."

The guard nodded then motioned her on the way. With a curt bow she ambled out of the citadel.

"Nice backside eh?" One guard was overheard nudging the other. The other just grunted returning to his post then.

The medic for the guard Florence is seen pouring over various books on a wide range of subjects, some related to her task as a healer, other nights related to combat history. Most often though seen in her possession is a worn book titled 'Abridged history of barovia' she pours over it daily occasionally making small notations in another book. Occasionally she gets odd looks from other guards but she just pleasantly smiles to them and returns to her studies. Whatever the particular book might be.

For recently Florence is also seen pouring over various sketches of Valiki, some drawn by hand others obviously purchased. Occasionally during these times of study she takes an empty large sheet of paper and attempts to redraw the map from memory without looking at the reference materials. In the case of the Slums district she seems more comfortable with it. Other places like the Nobles, and Residential District seem to frustrate her. Still she does not give up and continues despite the mistakes.

Rumors of the sudden arrest and shame of ex-Lance Corporal Igor Stavich spread whitin the guard. Same rumors and certain rejoicement from the majority of native guards at the lingering rumors about Corporal Vasham's upcoming disciplinary actions, his status believed to be uncertain in the guard.

::A white haired woman in the Morninglord vestments is spotted by locals entering the Citadel. She left only hours later with a withdrawn and empty look in her once lively gaze. A letter written is pinned to the large doors, blowing gently in the wind::

By now, I am sure news from the Barovian Village have reached here. I have turned myself in for crimes of assault against one Belinda Pope. I have paid my dues for such crime, but will pay more if it is required of me. I only ask that those of the Morninglord house do not suffer for my own actions that were in no way condoned by the Senior Priests within, and it was by their advisory I hand myself over to the law, for we are not above the law.

I humbly give myself to the law, for further judgment against this woman. An error in judgment made, I will pay whatever cost is required to save my clergy the sins of one.

As he walks to the gates leading to the market square he turns and looks back at the place he was once honored to call his home. A brief look of sorrow crosses his face. Throughout one of the coldest days in of winter, after the events that came to pass at the Citadel, one word is on everyone's lips amongst the Paesanty and guards.

Rebels!

The word frequently accompanied by a tirade of curses, many in the paesantry wonder and speculate about the number of casualties, they are told anything between the tens and twenties, many injured, but the worry is there. They worry that even the impressive sight of the Citadel isn't enough to slow down and stop the Gundarakite dogs.

Ex. Corporal Dragomir Katzinkaly, Barovian youth noted for his short but "eventful" service in the Vallaki Garda until the end of the Invidian war, has answered Barovia's call for good men and returned to arms in he military as a mere recruit. Some Barovians are ambivilant about his return- none could deny his skill or dedication, but the number of outlanders who remember him that were heartened by his return to the uniform is a little strange. And that he seems reticent to beat, stab, set on fire, or otherwise properly discipline outlanders unless directly ordered is of concern. No one can deny his skill with a blade though.

With the standing order that Guards not leave the Citadel at night, when not on patrol through the city or outskirts Dragomir can be found either in his bunk, intently pouring over foreign books about war and weapons; or in the training room working over the dummies with such intensity that he seems to be in a barely contained rage, hammering at the dummies with such ferocity he has to rotate daily or break them.

Words of tension at the Citadel as the Lieutenant of the guard Barnabás Krovache was expelled on a whim. Those that dare speak about it, mention Dagris becoming rash, violent; his regaining of the bottle habit also is amongst the rumors circulating on his behalf. Everyone is on the edge; some speak of recent events having had an impact on the Captain's stability; some speculate the return of ex-guard Termas Lamphrey is the cause, while others believe the Captain's life is catching up on him.

Meanwhile, some saw at early dusk, having seen a Carriage with the Zarcroft emblem to its side carry a prisoner, they speak of a somber scene, the man was missing a leg.

Word spreads that the ex-guard Tiberiu Mocvidek somehow gained entrance into the citadel, and badly mutilated the Morninglordian prisoner Horatiu Trandafir, before being subdued and jailed by the guards. Tiberiu was later found in his cell, dead, by assumed suicide, with chewed Belladonna root in his mouth. Perhaps the choice of death - the fatally-poisonous, but sacred Belladonna, was a symbol of the cults which poison and defile Barovia. Many others simply say Tiberu was a madman, as he was bound for the Zarcroft Asylum the next morning.

Many wonder how much longer the Von Zeklos will continue to surprise by having known vrajas and Imortij acting as prominent figures in their land, and how much longer will it take for the Count himself to notice...

The event is seen as an affront to the Burgomaster of Vallaki himself, present at the flogging given to the new Zeklos Knight, this comes after some tensions, some say, between the Vallaki Dilisnya  and the Zeklos Dilisnya who seem to been having a fall out. Excited chatter says Katzinkaly accused officer Gregori Iorgiovan of treason and conspiring with Vincent von Stravokov, presenting a letter from Stravokov as proof. Corporal Grigore Cazacul had Katzinkaly busted to recruit for his slander- Katzinkaly refused, and stripped naked right there revoking his posistion as a garda, quitting right there. Furious, Cazacul had him tied to a pillar for insubordination and sentenced him to 50 lashes, but every enlisted man called on to do it was unable to bring themselves to do it and by the time Cazacul himself decided to handle it, there were 3 awaiting lashes. Accusations were shouted, angry words exchanged, and when his mettle was questioned Katzinkaly is said to have screamed "I AM BAROVIA!" and snapped his bonds, and just walked out of the Citadel naked, swiftly leaving the city.

Humiliation and contempt. Words that describe the recent decision on the lips of guards, as announced by Vladimir Ionelus, who put Gregori Iorgovan in the hot seat, attributing him the decision of allowing outlanders back into the guard. The wisest can see the political game the Burgomaster's heir agile move created.

Several men speak in private, some are asked about the subject of Outlander Shinzo in the guard, many speak of of the softer hand and direction, Nicolai Ionelus is giving to Vallaki. The nomination of The Old Wardog as honor guard and his recent decision to allow outlanders in the guard fuels the perceptions that The Old Wardog and Old Ionelus are past their time. After recovery it seems the women Privates Camitru and Gachevska have taken to insulting his status as a former Guarda, while not following protocol on patrols.

I am but a simple man, whose origins are plain.
I am but a simple family man, who as a child only dreamed of marrying,
raising children with my wife, and taking care of our ancestral lands.
Such dreams, such simple honest and good living,
is impossible so long as the Devil occupies our lands.
Such dreams are choked out by the Devil and his wicked ways.
Our lands have been seized!
Our children are not safe.  The Devil corrupted my sister, tainted her body,
changed her into one of his undead minions.
Only by the good grace of Dawn, was she set free, as a whirlwind of ashes in the morning light.
And they call us monsters!

For Dawn and Gundarak,

Rebels Rise!

Rebels Rise!

The wrathful General, Vladimir Ionelus, would be heir to the Seat of Burgomaster is seen walking around the Citadel with fuming rage, cursing and openly disciplining guards with an unpredictable iron hand. Accounts of guardsmen being beaten to the pulp, left a bloodied mess by the General are hushed, spoken from guard to guard. More than once the General is heard cursing venom about desertion and the fickleness of men's loyalties, morning drills at the Citadel walls are heard by passerbys, men seen wearing nothing but summer clothing braving the hard conditions of winter. Always accompanied by his personal guards, there is a palpable aura of fear amongst the ranks, wherever the General sets his eyes on, officers, privates and recruits alike feel at ill ease...

Word of a strange and usual happenings...even for Vallaki...involving Neuri.

Just hours after one or multiple possible impostors are rumoured to have infiltrated the Citadel a new claim, yet to be officially confirmed claims a number of very large rat neuri somehow breached the walls of the Citadel and entered the city hall and archives of the Municipality of Vallaki where they no doubt met their end at the swords of Vallaki's finest.

Questions, muttered perhaps betwen lower ranking Garda and the native population  still remain unanswered...

Any link between this rat neuri attack and the one reported at the Blue Water Inn a few nights prior?

How did the terrors of Old Night manage to breech the walls of the most secure structure in Vallaki? A careless group of garda returning from patrol or something more insidious?

Was any damage done to the Burgomeister's office? The Vallaki archives?

Is this an act of the Gundarakite rebellion?

An air of unease has filled the citadel lately regarding the officers who've recently begun climbing the ladder.  Most want nothing to do with the old man covered in liver spots, who moves about like a man a quarter his age, or the Corporal who smells strangely of a wood burning stove at all hours.  While a few regard them as heroes. . . role models, for the feats of greatness that they have accomplished: slaughtering demons, witches, warlocks, and standing tall against the horrific threats that have been plaguing Vallaki as of late.  Most regard them as. . . something else.  What -are- these men?  Are they men?

A late night visitor has come infrequently to the Citadel, who has been seen requesting them personally, one who never shows his face, or his motives.  Rumors wonder if he is some sort of devil that the pair of Corporals have traded away their souls to for power, this power to overcome the supernatural.  Other rumors about this unknown visitor speculate that he is an emissary of the Count that also recognizes that these men are something more than they seem, and he is simply there to watch them, and to keep them in line.  Either way, the bulk of the soldiers want nothing to do with this nocturnal visitor, or the "men" he comes to visit, wishing to keep their distance from both a devil offering power, and an agent of the Devil Strahd.

Fear motivates them to follow these two, and listen to their orders, but there is little respect for the methods of this pair, who have been rumored to make use of both witch water, and the rebel's black powder weapons to accomplish their goals.  Respected or not, few can argue with their effectiveness, however nobody wishes to follow in their footsteps.

A desiccated, old heart was left in front of the gate leading out of the Government District, into the Market District, the night after Vladimir Ionelus instated Martial Law. It was surrounded by two candles, and smearings of blood that, upon closer inspection, turned out to be a grim symbol of Nerull, the Reaper.

Further inspection into the city would show that many houses and doorways were smeared with cruder versions of this symbol, all in blood.

The source of the blood is in no doubt, as many rats were slaughtered, and some even nailed or spiked to doorways, even that of the Prancing Nymph.

Two doorways were desecrated, but in a curiously different way. The Morninglordian temple in the slums, and the store of the city Undertaker. Both instead had their doors' frames smeared with blood, forming a crude outline.

Citizens and Guards alike breath a sigh of relief as the intern Burgomaster and esteemed General Vladimir Ionelus rides out the southern gate with a twenty rider routine for a week long hunting trip in the Tepurich Forest.

An eerie calm silence comes over the Citadel, yet a tense panic quickly grips the Burgomaster's House Guard. Seems something has occurred but the garda are under strict orders not to speak.

General Vladimir Ionelus has returned from his hunting trip only to discover dissention within the command. A secret no longer, the infamous war hero and savior of the city, Sergeant Gregori Iorgovan has kidnapped the ailing Burgomaster and has fled to parts unknown. A considerable bounty has been issued on the traitors capture and safe return of the General's father.

Rumours abound that The Vallaki Garda have finally found someone who was responsible in the kidnapping of Nicolai Ionelus! The former Garda, and traitor Natasha Orlov! The Current garda Lieutenant Vasile Pavlenco was seen escorting the traitor to the citadel. It's reported that her execution has already been scheduled. There have been an exceeding number of traitors lately; Natasha Orlov, Eugen Dumtirascu, and Gregori Iorgovan. All reportedly working together to unseat the General and hero of Vallaki from his rightful position as Burgomaster! It's whispered that Lieutenant Vasile Pavlenco has taken it upon himself to uproot this traitorous behavior by executing those whom do not follow Vladimir Ionelus.

A series of horn blasts are heard from the Citadel before the gates are sealed off. Those nearby would describe hearing countless Garda shout and scream, though not in terror. Rather, the sounds of panic and confusion arouse from the Citadel for the next hour, and even the occasionally sounds of fighting. When the chaos subsided and the gates reopened, word rapidly spreads of a small revolt within the Citadel. Details, however, are exceedingly scarce, and the Citadel would seem unusually quiet in response.

Very few Garda seem missing from their duties, but little is done to address a growing stress among the populace of Vallaki. As their questions go unanswered, speculation begins to spread.

She is known by many for her actions to unseat the traitorous Pavlenco, and end the reign of terror during the Time of the General. If it is true, then the Garda have lost a true defender, and Vallaki a true blue citizen. Word of court held upon the fourth of September soon spreads it way throughout the town. In this court:

The city's horse breeder, Festus the Gnome, brought up grievances long left unadressed: his home had been ransacked one year ago by corrupt guardsmen under command of Vasile Pavlenco the traitor and his wife was molested by that same blackguard - it was then revealed that Vasile Pavlenco had been apparently executed by the Wachter Militia when he had attempted to flee Vallaki during the custodianship of Vladimir Ionelus (confusing those who had heard that the same man was months ago terrorizing the streets of Vallaki once more!). He was arranged to have his damages assessed by the steward Orinal Romulich and paid by the end of the month to which he was satisified.

The Toret Siobhan McGilivray, one of the priests of the Refuge of the Fifth Light, petitioned for use of the park in the upper town for use of a festival celebrating the foundation of that temple as well as the people who had it made, the Burgomaster Ionelus consented to this usage of the park by them, and awaits their announcement of the day, hinting that he may come to do them, the builders, and his faith honor.

The priest of the Lawgiver, Kultur Nathrakt, unsuccessfully petitioned for the use of city land for a temple to his faith. The Burgomaster and many members of the council seemed to be visibly uncomfortable about the requests, with the conversation eventually leading to the land in the city either being privately owned or public and that at this time there were no vacancies and that the steward Orinal Romulich would "be in touch".

Lastly: It was announced the the Crafters Guild and the City will be hosting a great trade fair and harvest festival in October, to rise the spirits of the city as well as promote a day of trade and merriment that is certain to swell many people's coffers. As the date draws closer, further information shall be released.

Word spreads fast throughout the city about the departure of Squad III, the main defensive measure of the city outside of its walls and of the reaction to this absence: the recruitment drive (http://www.nwnravenloft.com/forum/index.php?topic=41913.msg530456#msg530456) for a militia under the command of Corporal Vladislav Aioanei - a man known well for his much mistrusted heritage: he is a half-elf as well as a bastard. He is said to around eighty years old and hardly looks a day over 30 due to his mongrel caste and has been serving with the watch since he was called into service as a conscript 40 years ago when Strahd von Zarovich called for the invasion of Gundarak. Beyond that he is known from his days as a patrolman for being especially cruel, specifically to those of the Gundarakite race - but also for an expertise in keeping the streets clear of crime and peaceful.

The tiny patrols of the acting militia continue to be carried out in the absence of Squad III, and in the face of terrifying stories of the Bandit King who had been felled by the Corporal Aioanei and the unready few under his command. However, with the coming of the great choking fog, the continued presence of the Chancellor van Holtz, and the stories of terrible monsters as well as the raiding of the Bandit King's "subjects" in the face of his apparently demise there is incredible tension and uncertainty in the city. The garrison does not take itself far from the city's walls and concerns itself only with immediate matters, leaving many on the borders to whatever calamity and evil that passes through.

Beyond this the Burgomaster's office has announced the banishment of several organizations deemed illicit - most under the severest penalties should they be found returned to the Grey City. These organizations (http://www.nwnravenloft.com/forum/index.php?topic=38953.msg532376#msg532376) are so far named as the Cult of Erlin, the Cult of Vecna, and any and all heresies of the Ezrite faith - the decision had been made during the last held court session in response to various happenings both recently in the city and historically. Along with this, the sinister master of one of the Cult of Vecna, a man named Vocar, has been named for bounty.

With grim expressions, they begin their usual patrols and stand guard at their usual spots. Their idle chatter is gradually overheard by those who reside in the Grey City; rumours quickly proliferate among the locals about a considerable amount of the Count's due taxes being absent from the City's coffers - revealed by the most recent census. These rumours are all but confirmed by the continued, panicked and harsh whispers shared by members of the Garda.

A group of shady individuals sweep through the night. They paint an overweight Strahd bathing himself with coins on the outer door of the Citadel.

Balthazaar the Executioner, wretched creature that he is, is often seem stalking about the slums of Vallaki on some dread errand for his master, the Count. Not so this night, or the next, or even the next after. Some foul business keeps him within the bowels of the Citadel, and the people of Vallaki claim that each evening fresh screams are carried upon a black wind, distance and unfeeling stone making them seem nothing but far off whispers born amid Tergish fortresses' spires and circular arches.

No less than three emissaries of the Count attended the lightning-lit execution of Balthasar Eotvos, self-proclaimed Prince of Gundarak; Valentin von Zarovich, Talena von Zarovich, and Vasili van Holtz. Those local unfortunates who were rounded up to witness the spectacles say little in public, save that the Count's Own Executioner removed the man's head with his bare hands. In light of the flames that glittered upon the Citadel's walls and were quickly snuffed out, and means darker still, the folk of Vallaki whisper behind closed doors of foul sorcery, of demons, and above all the work of the Devil. In Gundarak, the tale is bolder-- of the noble deaths of a handful of souls who dared to try, and the cowardice of all those who stood by and let fiends rule the night.

Svari Ionelus has not been seen descending from his residence since he was whisked away from the Citadel walls more than a week ago. While the usual rumors about ill-tidings persist in the wake of his absence, the noble Romulich family has come to call frequently, and the word from the mouths of maids and servants is the Burgomaster is recovering, albeit slowly.

A black carriage bearing the mark of the Von Zarovichs leaves the Citadel, traveling west through the slums and then through the outskits. Its escorted by Von Zarovich Soldiers. Those that saw the carriage speak in hushed whispers of the occupant being non-other than Valentin. In the coming days, the mood around the citadel seems lighter.

Though no cry of alarm would break the oppressive silence of night, it may have been noticed that each window of the citadel witnessed high above its walls was alight. It is an uncommon sight for each candle and torched burned with it a copper here and there in an expense seldom spared.

Shadows of movement would flit along these glimpses into the heart of Vallaki and the occasional hastened patrol would march with torches held high to illuminate an unspoken purpose. This frenzy would last an hour, two, and then as though succumbing to a quiet despair, the lights would extinguish one by one until all that remained were those that ever were.

Rumor would spread hours later as one shift of the guard changed to the next. What occurred that night was not said but from the grumbling complaints of the weary guardsmen picking over their breakfasts that morning, it had not been the standard shift any of them had been expecting.
