Title: Winter
Post by: Miuo on March 14, 2015, 05:12:36 AM
While making my way to the fishing lodge i realized that "winter" really doesn't seem very apparent out that way. Which seemed a little odd, since it was so well done in the outskirts and where the vistani are. And thought, maybe it would be a nice visual idea to carry some of the effects out into the surrounding area as well, like the frozen lake effect and such.

Speaking of weather.  It seems to rarely ever rain in the Outskirts (unless forced by a DM) or really anywhere.  It seems that it is perpetually dry throughout most of the server with few exceptions.  Perhaps a random variable that allows it to rain or thunderstorm on the occasion?  The only issue I could see is with the lag should it be raining the same time a merchant has a ton of items on the ground, but what merchant would put their wares out on display during a rainstorm?

Anyway, weather please!

It used to rain a lot in the Outskirts when I first started.  It seems to have tapered off recently for some reason.  Hak update maybe affected this?

I have also noticed less and less rain server wide.

Yeah, I can't speak for other Core Lands, but in Barovia it would rain almost incessantly in spring and early summer a few RL years ago, then on and off the rest of the year until winter.  Come to think of it, I don't even recall actual snowfall the past few winters.

This thread went off topic pretty quickly  :)

Going back to winter, would it be difficult to get rid of the cold damage in the Vistani camp, or at least around the fire near Petre? Most everyone wears cloaks, so it has little actual effect, but it is immersion-breaking to:

1) Be standing next to a roaring fire (that fire is huge!)

2) With a bunch of Vistani (including children) who don't look dressed very warmly

3) Casually inspecting wares

While constantly being told how the bitter cold is gnawing my bones.

Hi. It will not change. While you certainly make good points regarding the illogicality of being affected by the cold near such a fire, or the fact that NPCs do not look dressed for winter, you've got to consider the limits of the game engine we have to work with. Since that script has to be reused in a large number of other areas, the "seasonal" properties are assigned as variable to the whole area. It is by far less demanding that way for the server than having delimited trigger zones in each outside areas of the module. For the sake of efficiency, minor details like these simply have to be ignored.

If it's too difficult or algorithmically inefficient, it's certainly not worth it. I just recall that in HOTU being next to a fire prevented the otherwise constant cold damage of Cania.
