Title: NWN hard crashing
Post by: herkles on October 02, 2012, 12:10:00 PM
Hello,

sometimes I seem to have what I term a hard crash or a log-off crash. It seems to only effect NWN but basically every now and then when NWN crashes it won't close down instead I get the message

"The application is not responding. the program may respond again if you wait. Do you want to end this process?" there is a button for end process((which does nothing)) and cancel.

I have not figured out why this is and why it only effects NWN but this is annoying. As the only solution I have found so far is to log off and then back on. This is obviously annoying, so I am wondering if someone can help assist here.

sincerely,

-herkles

Do you have a soundcard or do you use the audio chipset on your motherboard?

Then you're probably using on-board audio, and it's probably Realtek audio, which sucks and has been known to cause those kinds of crashes. Try running the game with sound disabled and see if you still get those crashes.

I don't get what you mean by "solution", logging off and on. Since the game crashes, you can't log off. Then I presume you're logging on and off from Windows, in order to get ride of the pop up warning about the frozen application. If that is the case, hit cancel, then if you remain on the desktop screen, right click on the lower bar and select Task Manager, then in the tab Applications (something like that) check for Neverwinter.exe (similar to this), select it by left clicking on the name and hit the end process box or simply press delete. Or you if that doesnt work either, there's a harder way to force it to shutdown, go to the processes tab and "delete" nwn.exe   By the way, if you're not taken back to the desktop, do so by pressing alt + tab, or windows + D, or control + ESCape or even control + alt + del, more than once if the first doen't work. If you're on Windows 7, a screen with options will come up, click the text that says Open Task Manager, or again, something similar to that.

Onboard soundcards, the bane of gaming in general!

My game acts the same. Just suddenly mass crashes for no reason.

Did you guys find a solution? I tried disabling the sound and turning off grass and lowering the settings and everything. It only crashes on my new laptop with windows 8, my old one never seemed to have this problem.

Open up nwnconfig.ini located in your nwn directory, under [Processor] you will find NumCPUs= and the change the number to 1.

So I set it numCPUs=1 and it was fine for about a week, and now it's crashing -more- often. Is anyone having troubles with Windows 8?
