Title: *@unstuck* command
Post by: Honoun on August 18, 2012, 02:51:17 AM
Purely for those occasions when one finds themselves ported to some place due to an error where they are unable to get out of.  This command would port them to the nearest transition. of course I realise that such a command could be abused by immature players hence using this command to escape for example a dungeon cell that you were locked in due to an IC event would be a baning offence.

I'm only suggesting this cause one of my characters was recently ported to a ledge she couldn't get down from and there were no DM's on to assist at the time. least spamming the DM channel didn't seem to work they were busy if there were any on. I checked the command list and there didn't seem to be such a command there so I'm asking one to be added ;)

Could make it just jitter your location slightly in a random direction instead?

Well I suggested the nearest transition cause moving the char in a random direction could make the situation worse. Kinda defeat the purpose of the command in the first place. It is a thought though.

This is a good idea, as I believe Arelith has something like this and it's hella useful, considering it would potentially free up DM attention for something else. Perhaps have it so it sends info up into the DM channel, telling the DMs whenever someone is using it, just so that it doesn't get used in a way that's considered abuse?

You can build camp fire to push yourself off the edge, such system that suggested is too easy to be abuse. What hellpanda suggested more legit

I'll add that I was told about the camp fire method but did not have the option in my rest menu. Thus I got stuck and my only option was spamming the DM channel. None were on at the time thus I thought of this idea which would have been handy in my situation.

The command would be useful indeed but can be abused. Why not limit the use of this command, let's say once or twice in 24 hours. If that is even possible.

With my limited knowledge of scripting and it is very limited I might add, I do believe that a timer can be put on it. ;) So yeah that would be doable.

Why not just have it as an option in the rest menu? Can't rest in combat, so it can't be used to escape a badly going conflict.

i'd imagine that a char could be tagged with a variable after arriving through a trans, or when entering one, and the command could port you back to that last location.  Could probably make it so that it can't be used in combat too I'd imagine.

Of course, there is another option as well, grappling hooks on ropes with one use of port five to ten meters as a minor climbing implement for such situations, and just make it at about half the price of a misty orb and only sold in mountain towns. That way you could use it to get unstuck and it wouldn't have much other use, it could also be made to not be usable in combat, nod, nod.

The problem with that is that (in my experience, anyway) the random porting to an inaccessible location tends to happen in batches.  At least, I'll go weeks without it happening, and then suddenly it happens four times in one three-hour session.  Putting a timer on it would defeat the purpose of sparing DM attention.

One thing I have done is have someone close to me where I could put @follow on and once they went thru a transition so did I. But if your alone this wont help.

I like the idea of a grappling hook item that ports you a few steps forward, especially because it made me think of a mountain climbing dungeon that could be built around the use of that tool.

I don't like the idea of giving it an exorbitant price or making it single use.  The primary use that's suggested for it so far is to fix a nwn engine bug.  There's no reason to financially punish people for being affected by a random bug that isn't their fault.  Also, it doesn't make any sense from an IC point of view.  A grappling hook is a bit of metal and a long piece of rope, so it should cost about as much as buying a crowbar and a coil of rope.

I would suggest that upon using this command an interger is placed on the character who used it marking them of having just used the function. You cannot then use the function again as the interger would be stored on the character and would not reset itself untill the server reset. The porting to an inescapeable ledge or what ever is rare enough a bug in my experience that you wouldn't need to use it all that often so this could work fine. However this still leaves an issue if you happen to be extrememly unlucky and get ported by this bug several times in quick sucession. I would hazard a guess though that this would be extremely rare indeed.

All things being equal the command would check for the interger first, if the interger is still null on the character then the command will port you to the nearest transition. This may be futher back or further forward depending on where on the map you were ported. However as it is on the same map that you're currently on its not going to be very far either way.

Now I chose the nearest transition for two reasons. One is that they are everyhwere and I know its fairly straight forward to make the command to check for the nearest one. And two doing so would be less work for the devs as they only need to code for the command itself to find the nearest object that is already on every map across the server. No need to place any other placeable or flag to make this work.
