Title: Vallaki - Warehouse District
Post by: DM Nihilist on June 03, 2006, 07:08:05 AM
Durring the night, just at the break of dawn, screams of bloody murder could be heard comming from one of the alleys in the warehouse district.

Bloodstains covered the sidewalk, yet there are no corpses or witnesses. The only mention of the disturbance was made from people hidden safely inside their homes who only heard the screaming.

coming of next dawn, peasents speak wildly in the streets about what happened last night.

many woke up for the terrible racket sounded near Murnu's shop. They claimed to see three people, one woman and two men, helping a man who had fallen to those gigantic wererats.

one of the men were literally glowing and he was shrouded in some black swirling material, he was fighting against the huge wererats with the woman while the other man drag the wounded man away. there were few bright flashes of light and the wererats were dead, they came in fast, and left even faster without causing any further commotion or damage

The night air is broken by the squeels of rats, followed by the distinct shriek of a single woman before the silence of the night resumes.

A short while later the rats sound up again, followed by the alarmed sounds of horses, and finally the sounds of flesh being torn from corpses.

Dawn comes, revealing the bones of a pony, picked clean in the yard, and a small trail of blood leading to aleksei's shop.

Word has been making the rounds of the warehouse district about the wandering dwarven smith, Toli, seeking to ply his steel goods and wares to both the local populace and the transient population of outlanders.  He has been seen to fulfill several orders for delicate as well as ponderous weapons and several sets of sturdy suits of steel armor.

Talk spreads among certain people in the warehouse district of a young pale barovian man, clad in black who holds aloft the symbol of the morninglord. He does battle with the rats of the night with a cold determination and skill. There are also rumors his sword begins to glow at the height of battle, but these are usually scoffed at, simple ramblings of people who wish to make the story bigger then it is.

Locals shake their heads at the loss of an honest hardworking young man who wouldve made fine husband some day but continue their every day lives.

a tall Barovian man has been working the Forge day and night. committed to his craft, spending an unhealthy amount of time devoted to furthering his profession. Smoke rises from the Shop, a clear indication of its consistent recent use. As he hammers and shapes multiple weapons and armor, amber sparks illuminate the dim lit room. The burns and bruises on his hands and arms are a clear indication of the sweat and discipline he continues to Pour into his new found trade.

Each day he can be seen heading into the Southern Mountains with his Pack Ox, returning each evening with a large shipment of ore to work into the cold winter nights...

The body of  a Barovian peasant is found just outside the maintenance enterance to the Sewers. It has the look of absolute terror on his face with wide bulging eyes and gaping mouth open in a scream. The wounds seem shallow, as if done with a small blade, and while well placed, to the trained eye of a doctor or soldier, they themselves should not have been fatal. Yet the man is very dead and whatever kiled left the frozen visage of the horrible death upon the mans pale and haggard face.

At dawn, a crowd of peasants stopped to watch the execution of a wanted caliban criminal at the dias next to the leatherworking shop. This was quite clearly in response to the slanderous flyers left all over town accusing the Vardo of harboring caliban. The Vallaki Vardo branch captain, Vasco Silivasi, gave a speech making it very clear that the caliban was impersonating the Vallaki Vardo, and that the Vallaki Vardo would never hire a caliban. He then executed the caliban, and the Garda burned the corpse afterwards.

Winter is cold, but the gossip cauldron in the Warehouse District is bubbling with the tale of what looked to be a domestic dispute between two cargo loaders as dusk fell on the Gray City.

The point of contention was wages for hauling several crates of smelly fish from the lodge. The brawny male wanted to take the money for himself, and his equally brawny (female) companion gave him the sharp edge of her abusive tongue. Nevertheless, he eventually had his way and departed her presence with a full purse of fang. Her mournful caterwauling could be heard the rest of the night emanating from the warehouse's darkness.

Some wags report later that evening seeing the would-be dandy in the company of a much more attractive female--no doubt the beneficiary of his sordid gains.

An old, feeble miner arrived at the Crafting Hall leading an ox loaded with tin ingots. The immense quantity attracted attention, and--as he hardly looked capable of so much work himself--he was asked how he came by such a horde. He related the following tale:
Quote
Well, I was up in 'em hillsides in the southern farmlands where I knew there be some ore, but you have to watch for hobgoblins and such. So I was going along cautious like. Lo and behold I finds a couple of 'em bad boys stretched out on the grass with air evil heads lopped off, almost right in front of at cave they call home. All quiet now I ease up to the cave and don't see no sign of the rest. Getting bolder, I take a peek inside and they's all dead! Slaughtered like they deserved, if you ask me. Whoever done it didn't bother to take away any a the tin them monsters had mined, so I helped myself.

The only other clue as to what had happened to the hobgoblin encampment, according to the miner, was a shiny metal object he inspected but because of his superstitious nature left undisturbed on the ground at the cave entrance. He described it as almost like a bronze coin, but not any currency he'd ever come across in Barovia. "Likely varya," the old man muttered while making a gesture.

Under the cover of night, a black cat baring no collar with pupil-less eyes sluggishly hung a paper signand string over the crafting hall sign. In a blocky script it reads as follows:

"First she rids you of your tyrant. Your enemy. Then she forbids his name. All good, except your brother said it to spite the man, now he's dead. Did the tyrant do that? Oh, then she kills your beautiful daughter, Rosa, Bianca. Why? Because her name is so much better of course. Idiot. Say hello to being without that beautiful daughter you're hiding. How you would watch her take her first steps, her first words. Or think of your sons, robbed of a chance to become fathers in life! Too bad. Did you know she ordered the exocution of a Vistani? Remember that hanging? That lunatic that slaughtered so many fine men? Some might say yes, that their brother or son now lies dead. All because she ordered a Vistani to death. Still reading? Good! Angry? You have the right to be! It is only a matter of time until the next edict that will make you feel uneasy about her. CASTLE RAVENLOFT's renaming to Castle Lyssa is not a sign of simple vanity. It is an act of War against your ancestors who fought and died to claim and tame this land! An act of War by a woman driven by vanity, and CURSED by vistani!"

The black cat vanished into the night, a misty trail leading to the sewers.

The sounds of shouting and fighting echoed from Warehouse V during the night. Those working the morning shift who were brave enough to peek into the wares hall would have noticed blood spatters tracked across the floor and what seemed to be the remains of a smashed crate against the wall. Some other faint odour permeated the air. At best, it could be identified as burning garbage.

There is much frightened talk today of a massacre occuring in the Warehouse district of Vallaki by some powerful creature, leaving many guards and civilians dead. Whispers speak of large canine claws and tracks in the ground and among the gore, and of a wolf that walked on two legs. Some of the peasantry speak in hushed tones of wolves - and worse - coming down the mountains driven hungry for flesh after the harsh winter.

Panic is slowly beginning to spread among the populace, due to this most recent attack, as well as the talk of an outlander coalition, rumours of sudden and unexplained disappearances, the talk of strange and sinister figures such as 'the midnight raptor', and of course the looming threat of Invidia and the bloody aftermath of the skirmish to the West. Some families have even begun to pack their things and move from Vallaki to stay with relatives in what they believe to be safer villages...

Word spreads that the daughter of the trader Marin Corneliu went bankrupt and sold the Corneliu house in the Warehouse District. It seems that after the dissapearance of her two parents, who kept the bussiness going in the right direction, the woman failed to raise up to her parent's skill in trading, and also spent all of the savings on finding them. She was last seen not long ago exiting her former home, clad in cheap armor and carrying a plain sword and shield, probably the only property she had left, and leaving towards the Western Outskirts. One can only guess what this woman's purpose is now.

OOC: Sorry this is a bit late but real life caught me up in its grip!

====

It was an early morning just after dawn broke when the barely on duty guard horns blared out within the Warehouse district. Three massively large nerui rats that had not returned to their dark sewers at day light were attacking the peasants and guards.

Thankfully only a pair of Barovian women were lost before the figure of a heavily armored Morninglord cultist came in through the south eastern gate and engaged the three rats striding for the guards at the gate. Drawing them a bit away the figure soon recognized by some as Lauel Martovich was seen striking down all three after taking a bit of a beating herself.

However, while after the fight she leaned against Murnu's one wall wrapping her wounds with bandages out of nowhere witchcraft magics sprouted from thin air, impacting the selfless light carrier and knocking her dead before any defense could be raised. A brief glimpse of a humanoid like figure in black hood and robes with a thick build was seen before it vanished again, taking with it the fallen remains and possessions of the light carrier. A few blood splatters would lead down into the sewers within the warehouse gate. But of course no one dared to follow, so where the remains of the fallen light carrier are now is anyone's guess and who took her.

Blood and terror in the streets!  The Beast of Vallaki, which has attacked the outskirts, the forests, the Ezrite temple and more besides, has returned to spread his mayhem and bloody hatred through the warehouse district once again.  Nine were cut down and ripped apart, including a brave outlander whose body was savaged and ripped by claw and hungry fang.

Amidst all the blood and mayhem, there was eventually silence as the monster, some eight feet tall and dripping with blood, carved into the flagstones by the northern gate, three number.  "9" "8" "6".  There is as of yet, no explanation of the digits, but the awful, gorey sight persisted long after the brazen werewolf departed.

Soon, two figures appear outside of Warehouse II during the afternoon. One is hooded and wears a white cloak and white-and-brown jerkin. The other has black hair and wears silver armor with a red tabard.

They scrub up the bloody pentagram with water and brooms, ignite some candles in the shape of a cross, sprinkle the building with holy water, and drizzle more holy water over the spot where the pentagram was. The one in white writes scripture on the door in Common and Celestial as a ward.

Then the duo kneels and prays for some time. Amid their intonations, the following can be heard:

"Cleanse the evil that has intruded here. ... Enforce your victory over corruption and death, and expel the taint of undeath that these witches have brought. For night shall always turn to day. Shadow shall always yield to Light. Evil shall always bow at your name. And you will be victorious."

The Christian cross can be seen knocked over and boxes thrown around. Claw marks are visible on most of them.
A young woman in red seems to leave the place being visibly very angry.

[A hooded and cloaked woman places a single lit candle outside the Silvervine Distillery leaning down to write a simple message in the dirt. "May you find rest and those close to you find some hope in the dark times" She leaves without speaking to anyone.]

[Three nights later, the candle was disposed by a pale, cloaked figure and the writing long since gone long Barovian nights of harsh rain...]

The windows of Christ's Church in Warehouse Two, typically aglow with a warm cheer, have oft been dark these recent nights, save for a singular light that has burned later and later into the night as the days have passed.

The warm glow has returned to Warehouse Two in recent days, light spilling through the windows all through the night.

As a rain-drenched dawn recently broke over the city, a black-haired, silver-eyed half-elf in a white tabard was seen dragging a large wooden chest out the building's door and into the trading-house, smiling warmly despite the downpour and the apparently heavy load.

Early in the morning, when the rats have cleared from the streets, workers are seen very carefully hauling brewing equipment out of Shop I and into the storehouse across the street. They are directed by a Barovian woman with a long braid, dressed prettily yet practically in black, brown, and olive green.

The seeds of a new business have been planted, it seems.

A single candle is left outside what was formerly the Adamachi Silverleaf Brewery, along with a note and a single bottle that would be familair to those who've seen it before. The note clearly has been purposefully been left cryptic.

Quote
I don't need two eyes to see your hesitation, nothing has been done that you cannot turn around from yet. I was going to share this with the lance-corporal, come find me and all will be forgiven. There are those who still care about you, don't let that beast convince you that you should be like they are. You are not, and never will be.

For Vallaki, and Barovia.

As the night draws on, candlelight burns cheerily in the windows of Warehouse Two. To any passing by at this hour, the faint scuffing of a broom can be heard, pierced by occasional shriek of a kettle.

Since the other day, the same Barovian woman as before and a scarred Gundarakite man may have been glimpsed entering or leaving Shop I. There is sometimes the sound of work being done therein; it seems the store is coming along nicely.

A message in Balok has been pinned on the door of the Crystal Clothier

Dead rats are scattered around the door, as if someone threw them against it.

The woman in question does eventually arrive upon the scene with great shock, hastening to take down the letter and clean the front of the store.

In the time it takes for her to get there, however, some eyes certainly could have been set upon the notice prior to her coming.

As Barovia's signature gray skies wash Vallaki with the morning rain, a black-haired half-elf in a white tabard with a gold cross is witnessed stumbling onto a grisly scene in the warehouse enclosure. Strewn upon the doorstep of the Christ's Church, Warehouse Two, is a viciously mutilated corpse.

The half-elf shrouds the unfortunate soul in his ulster cloak. Accompanied by a dark-hooded figure, he gingerly lifts the covered body over his shoulder and sets off westward, toward the outskirts.

Shortly before dusk, the pair returns to the enclosure, the bloodied ulster draped over the drenched half-elf's arm, and enter Warehouse Two.

A man walks into Warehouse Three in the warehouse district with a lot of wood and a portable carpentry kit.
A lot of noise can be heard as he tears down old furnishings and replaces them with new ones.

A woman in white cloak can be seen walking from the south forest toward the Shop 1 several times, carrying with her large amounts of wood each trip.
