Trying to install my copy of NWN. No problems, up until it tries to install nwmain.exe.
From there, my computer's fan goes beserk, and the installation crashes. Any similar issues had in the community?
-
Lol, going to reinstall mine in some 3 hours. I will let you know...
-
did you check Bioware's NWN1 tech support forums?

Yes, I didn't find anything relevant. My worst fear is a damaged copy, which is strange, since I have two discs of Diamond, one CD key. One SHOULD work, but both are experiencing the same issue. I suspect something with my PC, since there was a rollback on my PC, and somehow the game was uninstalled. Perhaps a reformat of my hard drives will fix it.
-
What is your computer's OS?
-
Windows XP.
-
Weird, from the sounds of it I thought you might have Vista...no idea what your problem could be :?
-
I'm having issues with graphics. FPS are very low, it's messy. I've just bought this computer, and if you're going to tell me to update/reinstall drivers I need really someone to tell me step by step what I need to do because I'm not any good with it. Going on Nvidia website didn't fix because it makes me download stuff which don't do anything worth. Clues? My computer is as follows:
Processor:
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83GHz (4 CPUs)
Memory:
2048MB RAM
Hard Drive:
1000 GB
Video Card:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260
Sound Card:
Realtek HD Audio output
Operating System:
Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3 (2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090804-1435)
-
Could be your CPU affinity.. or I think i remember from somewhere that Nvidia cards are an issue, the more modern ones.. not sure.
-
Erm so? Can't play?
-
You probably just need to set the affinity in the nwn.ini file
-

I really don't understand. I am one sweating even to install haks normally.

Read this here: http://www.nwnravenloft.com/forum/index.php?topic=10560.0
Basically, NWN was programmed back when computers only had one processor, so the new multi-processor CPUs make the game go crazy. One of the later patches added an option to force the game to use only one processor.
-
Okay read it through and make myself a culture, I understood I have to change something in the specific but don't know where finding it.
-
look in your folder for NWN and locate the file called "nwnplayer.ini" You open this with something like Notepad.
-
Like the others said, make sure under [Game Options] in the "nwnplayer.ini" file you have:
Client CPU Affinity=0
-
Checked. It's 0. Any other clue?
-
Check this part and see if it matches:
3D settings:
Multi-display/mixed GPU acceleration: single display
Texture Filtering - Trilinear opt: off
Threaded opt: off
Triple Buffering: off
-
Checked and it's the same. Well I've tried Dragon Age and it works well and with no lag or whatever. So it's a metter of incompatibility of this system and NWN. But I've no clue on how to fix it. Really not one. Playing 17 FPS is like having a Ferrari and using it only in town.
-
Yeah, my other games run smooth as butter.. but soon as I log into ravenloft, its a choppy run with a low fps..
Now, in my nwnplayer.ini I don't even have
3D settings:
Multi-display/mixed GPU acceleration: single display
Texture Filtering - Trilinear opt: off
Threaded opt: off
Triple Buffering: off
Where exactly is that in the nwnplayer.ini, or where should it be?
-
I actually checked in Nvidia control panel...
-
Ah. :)
Thanks C.
-
Checked. It's 0. Any other clue?
You can try values from 1-4, it will force the game to run on a single spesific core, it may make a difference.

Derailed. :(

UPDATE:
Tried installing to another drive, failure.
I got a message saying the "remote destination call failed", or some such. :/
-
wow, that's....I've never even heard of that error before. :?

It is possible that as the game wasn't properly uninstalled but sort of 'disappeared' during a rollback its registry entries were not modified/removed properly. So as the game tries to update them during certain parts of the installation it cannot do so properly and the installation fails. Its just a guess though.

That sounds highly plausible. How would you go about fixing that?

From bioware tech support:

If you need to manually uninstall Neverwinter Nights, follow these steps:
1. Delete the folder where the game was installed
2. Remove the entry from the start menu

Update:
It was a Remote Procedure call, sorry for the mistake. It says it failed to make one.
While a good idea, your solution didn't succeed, Blacky. :/
Also, when I started the installation, this time, it said before starting, "Could not find a proper installation."
-
Try running the installer in administrator mode. I've had an install of a program fail because it didn't have write access before.
-
I am an administrator.. Unless there's another way?
-

Not under windows xp, at least, not that I know of.
I'm out of ideas as to what the problem might be at this point but there are a few things you can try I suppose:
* Make sure the game disks work by trying to install them under another machine.
* Run msconfig, go to the Services tab, and make sure Remote Procedure Call and Remote Procedure Call Locator are checked.
* Make sure the hard disk you're trying to install it under does not have any bad sectors.
* Try to install a version of nwn that is not the diamond/platinum edition.
* Reinstall the operating system.
* Install another operating system onto another hard disk or partition and try to install nwn under that.

I took a shot in the dark, ran the setup under Windows 2000 compatability mode. It's installed. :D

Attempted to re-install after a nasty virus wipe.
When it comes time in install CD 3 i get the message:
Aborting Installation-> Setup has changed files on your system that will cause NWN not to work->Return game to a playable setup run Critical Rebuild.exe on root CD.
Went to root CD(CD 1) and CriticalReubuild said to: 1. Uninstall NWN 2. Install NWN 3. Update NWN with updater.
Except since the install was interupted I can't uninstall it to install it.
Suggestions?

Yeap, stuck in an endless loop. Could the CD be bad?
-
Possibly the case. I lost my CD years ago, and had to torrent a copy to get to play again. (Thank Tyr I registered my keys!)

download the critical rebuild from Bioware's site instead, see if that helps

Is this the same as CriticalRebuild.exe found on the 1st Installation CD?
I searched Bioware. All i found was Critical Rebuild for patches. Is that what I want?
-
Yes. You'll need it anyway since the updater no longer works.
-

//Edit: Changed to cd'es did't mean keys, though it is legal in dk to obtain an copy of the cd's aslong as you are an rightfull owner.

No. I think the issue maybe my OS. Win 7.
Based on some research on the Bioware forum. I opened CriticalRebuild.exe and changed its properties so it can run Win 98 but still same error.
No idea what to do.
I am starting to fear the inevitable.
-
I've got Windows 7 and didn't have these issues. I installed NWN from my Diamond disk, and then installed the 1.69 critical rebuild patch from the Bioware forums. That's it.
-
I use windows 7 64 bit and never had any issues with NWN.
-
CD3 was damaged. I downloaded the Diamond edition from these guys. http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/neverwinter_nights_diamond_edition
Thanks for everyones help.
