Title: Port-à-Lucine - Quartier Marchand
Post by: failed.bard on September 19, 2009, 03:35:46 AM
[Word on gendarme's lips speak of the brutal, revolting murders at Quartier Marchand. The loathsome display of half eaten corpses sprawled on the cobblestone raise indignity and fear. Citizens are told to stay indoors, the authorities are on the look out for a wild beast.]

Sarah the mute "Queen of the Seas" has recently appeared again regularly in the Mutinied Sailor Inn, occasionally in company of some friends of hers. She blows kisses to Jean as usual, drinks her poor quality beer, stays there and seems to be waiting for something. Someone can swear she has handed a message to Jean, probably a love letter. Sailors are romantic sometimes, they say.

Around the Press more than a Chat Noir has been seen going in and out from that establishment. Someone rumours maybe, despite the general commotion caused by the recent events in Port-à-Lucine, the Club is at any rate preparing something. People wonder if their next plan will be safe, or, in general of which kind it can be. The operations seem still rather secretive, nevertheless some of the workers of the area might swear they heard clearly discussions about flyers, and about a new opportunity for local talents to take advantage of. The cat seems to go where the food is better and the shelter safer. Some occasional autumn rain washes away the dirt and the bad memories of the past days. Hidden in a corner, a black cat licks her lips, waiting for the right moment to walk again in the alleys. Uncareful of rumours, yet feeding them.

Art collectors and critics, in Port-a-Lucine were shocked to learn that the new Gilbert Lizotte showcase was to be held in an abandoned warehouse in the Quartier Marchand right on the water's edge. The showcase opens this evening, and is free to the public. It is said in some circles that it will be a great failure, due to it's dangerous location in an unsavory part of the city. Despite this the rumors of Gilbert's shocking work, and the emotional reactions they cause in the viewer may still draw a crowd.

With the great success of Gilbert Lizotte's showcase, he has agreed to leave his display up, and open to the public for the next few days. While it will not be the huge influx of viewers it was on opening night, it is still expected that many stragglers will come to take a look at the infamous artwork.

Locals could have heard the clash of steel on steel and the echo of spells in during the past twilight hours.  Those looking out their window would have seen two armored men combating a very large force of Caliban Gangleaders.  One of the men, seemingly the stronger of the two was very pale skinned wearing dark chain and plated armor.  The cloak on his back bore the crest of the new Family that has arrived in town.  The other armored man wore bright colors and wielded a large sword.  These two seemed polar opposites and why they were working together, one could only speculate.  The darker man could be heard shouting with the Caliban over the fray of combat, "These streets belong to the family now!  Accept our embrace or perish!"  He shouted.  It would seem his words fell on deaf ears however as the Leader of the Caliban shouted back, "They belong to us!  Time to die!"  Soon after, the other warrior fell to the hands of one of the Gangleaders.  Following his fall, the dark armored man could be heard shouting, "You have made your choice!  These streets belong to Alexander the Destroyer!  Now perish before the might of my blade!  Die you filthy scags!"  A moment later the fight was over and the Caliban bodies littered the ground.  The Destroyer could then be seen healing the other warrior before fading into the shadows of the night...

A wise observer would probably attribute this with the increased Ezrite presence in the city.

A small fire erupted in the upper floor of the Mutilated Sailor, burning one of the vacant rooms. The bed itself, was nothing but a shambling of dead wood and ash, clearly, the source of the flames.
An "eye witness", if you could claim such, as a local resident of the place, speaks of an oddity of a couple entering the same room; A man, marred with gruesome scars and smelling of decay and rot, and a woman of red beauty, who's elegance and demeanor were quite the opposite of the hideous "rot man" going upstairs into said room.
During the couple of hours they spent in the upper level of the establishment, a man's voice was heard screaming and shouting in pain, coupled with the thick scent of blood, sterilizing alcohol and freshly cut flesh was all that came from their room prior to the fire.
The drunken man claims, that only the man managed out of fire alive, as the woman was no where insight once the fire ate through the room, and tried spreading into the rest of the rooms, yet still, no body was found...

Madame Montte on reading the latest issue of LECT is heard telling all who will listen that clearly the coward that writes this rag is a social malcontent angry that he is not accepted by decent society and thus lashes out in his jealousy. While tired of his slander and lies she does not take that matter seriously since any who attended the service know that her visit was both polite and brief. She feels terrible that Madame Nightlyre must have the terrible memory brought up by this social pariah when she herself was present and knows the writing to be false. Madame Montte looks forward to his next batch of lies as decent society very much enjoy ridiculing and laughing at this person who is less than a man. She also lets it be known that the proceeds from her lawsuit against him will be given to charity

[The corpse of a scantily clad woman and a brutish man with an axe would be seen on one of the piers of the docks. Uncommon about this would be trails of some sort of slime going from the corpses - many trails - past the pier and around to the ledge of the docks, ending right at the water. That the two corpses appear to have the same slime on them, and wounds that might appear as if something emerged from their bodies, could lead one to the conclusion the trail actually started with the corpses, with whatever having made the trail having made their way into the sea.]

Numerous bodies are found scattered across quartier marchand with their throats ripped out and their bodies horrifically savaged. Gendarme and nobleman alike appear to have suffered the same fate.

The word on the population of the fair city's lips is 'loup-garou', but the gendarme have dismissed the very notion as being something out a fairy tale. Some whisper it is the act of the revolutionaries.

For a few nights now, a beautiful lady leaves the Vardo shop in the Quartier Marchand to hunt down thieves, burglars and thugs that lurks about the street. Rapier in hand, she turns them to ribbons, does that escapes her fierceness, might report to their leader that it could be a good idea to make a deal with the Vardo instead of escalating violence.

// Rose would love to make a deal with the local thugs to leave the street alone at night. Maybe when back from Vacation.

The quartier Marchand was littered with corpses, in the following morning. Some within the hospice of the sisters reported sounds akin to a warzone in the dead of night, swords clashing, arrows bouncing off armor, etcetra. The dead would be Borcans, with remenants of oozes smoldering on the ground next to them.

A grotesque scene welcomed travelers departing or arriving from the Quartier Marchand. As daylight broke over the port city, a scene of violence was revealed.

A human body was pinned to the Port's noticeboards by his right hand, dangling limply by a mundane dagger wedged tightly into the wood. The clothes were drenched in thick, fresh blood, while the body itself appeared ancient-- withered and decayed. Most notably, however, was the violent burning of the face. The victim was largely unrecognizable, wielding fleshy remnants and pieces of skin with thickly coagulated blood drooping from what used to be ridgelines of the jaw and brow. Written presumably in the man's blood on the message board above him are the words, "The Grey Hag must confess for her crimes."

Each of the man's wrists were severely broken and twisted, even the hand that was unattached to the signpost, suggesting potential abuse before death.

Even with the gross disfigurations, a more thorough inspection would reveal a telltale pair of fang-marks on the base of his neck.

A number of these posters have been hung up around Port-à-Lucine:

Quote
Beware! Necromancers lurk the streets!

Renée Bellamy, editor-in-chief of La Bougie, was assaulted by a Nerull-worshipping necromancer last evening. The culprit was a deathly thin woman with cloth wrapped around her head, and wore what appeared to be a black tunic and pants with metal studs.

The culprit tortured Renée extensively before subjecting her to horrific necromantic experiments. Renée's face was cut off and an eyeball gouged out. Despite receiving prompt magical healing, she is still blind in one eye.

Exercise caution if you see the woman. She is capable of making herself invisible and knows how to move quietly to avoid detection. She can lurk out of the shadows at any moment to catch a person who has lowered their guard. She is also capable of casting see invisibility, do not rely on magic to keep yourself hidden from her!

Charlemagne Devereaux, proprietor of the Free People's Labor Union and Devereaux textiles, was seen earlier making a public announcement regarding a copy of the bloody message tacked to the notice board.

"My friends!" he was reported to have said before a crowd of working class citizens, rattling the announcement above his head with a wide smile.  "It seems the fiend that has plagued our streets has seen fit to address people worthy enough that the monster deems people, while it murders our working class!  Notice how the creature tries to speak to you, the working class, while it thinks we will forget that this beast has targeted only the proud men and women that run our mills and build our ships!  This is a message to incite anarchy by claiming incompetence of our nobility, and those that would protect us, while this monster attacks our neighbors!  Know that this is the true enemy here.  Not the officials doing all they can to bring this abomination to justice.  If this thing ever had a heart it would turn itself in, and donate its own reward to the Halan clergy it claims to have such high regard for!"

Monsieur Devereaux then burnt the notice in plain view of everyone, and spent a few more words urging them to be brave until this monstrosity was brought to justice.

False accusations seem fairly common here. Those of the higher classes merely try to protect themselves by spreading lies about their enemies. I have not killed your sailors, nor your working men. Rumors originate from a member of the newly formed People's National Army which hint that Helene DuSuis may be betraying the spirit of the revolution (even to the point of beingcounter-revolutionary!) through her apparently recent relationship with former Councilors Dominic D'Honaire and Wymmer Drukker; asserting that only the People's National Army will alleviate the struggles faced by the citizenry, uphold the principles of the republic, and protect the rights of the citizenry espoused by revolutionaries across the city. Oskar de La Rose, in PNA uniform, could be seen by the Widow's Walk with other soldiers, attempting to get sailors cooperation in maintaining order in parts of the Marchand.

In a scene reminiscent of the nights preceding the Revolution, gendarmes were seen manning barricades in the Quartier Marchand after dusk, to protect the building from vandalism and looters. Once the situation was fully under control, the gendarmes and the courageous citizens who helped them dismantled the barricades and the gendarmes returned to the Gendarmerie. This week, barrels of Bruyère's Aigre, a cheap apple cider produced in a brewery near Edrigan, are removed from tap-houses and emptied into sewer drains around the merchant's quarter. Though the brew was not well-acknowledged, for a drunken sailor's palate is not exactly picky, a handful of patrons inquire as to the reason their 'medicine' was discarded. The answer is... disconcerting.

Apparently, the brewery ceased operations after the owner was found boiled alive in one of the stewing vats.
The most unusual thing was that the vat in which Simon Bruyère's bloated body was found had its lid sealed.

As is the way in the City of Lights, speculation begins to fly, lending the sailors and laborers some morbid entertainment for a few nights. Perhaps a rival had Simon Bruyère done in? Had a deal gone wrong with smugglers? Or was it an unpaid creditor?

Whatever the case, Bruyère's Aigre is no longer on the menu.

The two swapped several of the same charges that have plastered every noticeboard of the city for several days now. But as dusk fell the two only stalked away, disappointing at least a few of the spectators who witnessed the exchange and who would have been relieved to see this festering wound lanced.

Coming on the heels of the disastrous auction that led to a challenge of honor at the Governor's Hotel, such open hostilities cannot go on forever before someone--guilty or innocent--pays the ultimate price.

The silence in the lower districts of Port-à-Lucine was disturbed in the little hours of the night by the sound of clashing steel and the cries of terror of those assaulted. Mere thugs and criminals, all of which spared a grisly fate, emerging only with bruises and other such minor injuries. In their filth-ridden taverns and bars, they would tell their fellows of their purported assailant, a short figure dressed head to toe in simple, brown robes of burlap, holding a radiantly glowing sword in one hand, leaving them down on their behinds in mere seconds. When they awoke, later, not without a hurting headache, they'd find rolled up pieces of parchment in the folds of their vests, written in Mordentish...

It happened in late morning, after all the trade and fisher vessels were loaded and set off on their various routes, and all the returning vessels from previous ventures docked and unloaded their goods and sailors, just around the midday meal when the ruckus of dock life begins to settle down and disperse. A lone, lost ship returned to port after being away too long unaccounted for at sea. It came in on a quiet afternoon wind, with a torn sail and a tired, sunburned and weary crew disembarking. Lingering dock hands rushed to take in what remained of the cargo with a bewildered relief. Not all lost ships return to dock, after all. A particularly tall red haired sailor, disheveled like the rest of them, is seen waving farewell to the crew, checking in at the dock office, and promptly heading indoors to rest at the nearest inn. While ships caught in doldrums are not uncommon this time of year, it is said that there had to have been a skilled healer on board to bring back as much of the crew as they had.

Rumors circulate in the city around the sword duel and its respective outcome, between commoner Alphonse L'Heureux and member of the nobility, Monsieur Jacinth de la Rochenoire. The swirling rumors offer contradictory speculation regarding to the conflict's origin. A sobering consensus, however, is that Monsieur de la Rochenoire lay dead in a duel that was supposed to be non lethal, a gentleman's option to yield purportedly to serve as the conclusion of the dispute. Alphonse L'Heureux, at the conclusion, was abruptly escorted away by a detachment of Gendarmes, accused of murder.

Rumors begin to circulate that the Captain of La Grâce de Damon, a young and comely Dementlieuse maiden of braided raven hair and fair skin, has been spending some of her evenings performing and playing at the Mutinied Sailor in the company of members of her crew, company and the sailing men of other crews as the long nights of the City of Lights carry on. Patriotic tunes and jaunty shanties were played to the delight of some.

Quote
WATCH OUT FOR THE TRAITOR!

ALL GOOD PEOPLE OF OUVRIER AND MARCHAND!

WE PRONOUNCE SYLVIE COULETTE A SNITCH AND A TRAITOR TO HER PEOPLE.

HER CRIMES ARE AS LISTED:

AIDING HER LOVER, JACINTH DE LA ROCHENOIRE, IN COVERING UP HIS LIES. ALTHOUGH HE CLAIMED THAT SHE WAS PRESENT DURING HIS FIRST ASSAULT ON THE QUARTIER WATCH, SHE WAS NOT THERE.

COMPLIANCE IN THE FACE OF BRUTALITY. SHE WATCHED IDLY, AS HER LOVER, JACINTH DE LA ROCHENOIRE, ASSAULTED A MAN, WHO DISCOVERED THEM DURING INTERCOURSE IN AN ALLEYWAY, ALMOST KILLING HIM.

ASSAULT UPON THE DENIZENS OF QUARTIERS OUVRIER AND MARCHAND AND DECEIT. SHE KNOWINGLY APPROACHED MEMBERS OF THE QUARTIER WATCH IN ORDER TO SPY ON THEM FOR HER LOVER, JACINTH DE LA ROCHENOIRE, USING LIES AND MANIPULATION. AT THE SAME TIME, HER HAND ROSE AGAINST THE POOR PEOPLE OF OUVRIER AND MARCHAND.

IS SYLVIE COULETTE WHAT CHURCH OF EZRA HAS TO OFFER, AFTER CLOSING THEIR DOORS IN OUR FACES?

GOOD PEOPLE OF OUVRIER AND MARCHAND, OFFER SYLVIE COULETTE OR THE DISHONORABLE BRUTE, JACINTH DE LA ROCHENOIRE, NO AID, NO FOOD, NO PEACE, AND NO INFORMATION!

Late into the evening of the 12th of June, dozens of sailors and security personnel on shore leave in the Quartier Marchand cut their daily routines short, and begin to vacate the docks and surrounding recreational areas. The retrofitted carrack "La Grâce de Damon" begins to come to life as her crew returns to fill her hold once more, bringing on what is said to be a variety of food, water, rum and cases of black powder and shot. Shortly thereafter, the large vessel's mooring lines are cut from the docks and without further word, the sails come to life. The ship's Captain, a young Dementlieuse woman wearing a wine red coat and with braided raven hair is seen organizing the departure, before being seen onboard at the helm as the ship slipped its moors and made way into the Baie de Parnault.

Speculation surrounds the sudden departure of the vessel whose runs were infrequent enough that its crew and presence in the Quartier Marchand became something of a feature, and the docking fees the pleasure of tax collectors -- Though, a thing short-lived. In the days that came, La Grâce de Damon and her crew did not return home to its moors in Port-a-Lucine.

The bustling commotion and clamor of masses of individuals pouring into the Quartier Marchand echoed over the cobblestone streets come morning. Rumors swirl of the recent and substantial influx of fresh bread at markedly discounted prices being offered by Pain et Fromage in Le Grand Bazaar. Crowds begin to form and lines sweep through the market hall, the hungry gathering and scrounging together what means they had for purchase of this expensive and scarce resource while so close to the looming shade of war.

The source and timing is subject to much scrutiny in gossiping circles.  That the bread supply was so scarce and exorbitantly priced one day and on the heels of the next significantly reduced in price and abundant in supply leads to a frenzied speculation.  Who provided these provisions to this one merchant and, given demand and even at discounted prices, how much do they stand to profit?  The speculation does nothing to deter the throng of the hungry who scrape together their solars and flock to the Grand Bazaar, piling inside.

A strange, black candle is seen near the door of the Red Vardo Store. Set during the night, the candle burns slowly, but surely. Without question, the placement of this otherwise harmless wax light sings an ominous tune. Those who gaze upon the candle are struck with the typical array of questions. Who? Why? ... When?

Time will surely tell.

An overall quiet giamarga woman has taken up residence in Quartier Marchand, purchasing one of the smaller rooms in the local rentals. With posted notices outside her door requesting her neighbors to warn her if she becomes too loud, she occasionally practices her singing by the window where she hangs her laundry. She appears fairly comfortable in the Marchand, occasionally recognizing and catching up with some who remember her as a child.

Barricades and bulwarks! Torches and Traps! A checkpoint was erected on Widow's Walk during the middle of the night!

As the sun sets behind the city the sounds of construction could be heard on Widow's Walk. A hammer's thump and the dull moan of a saw blade drone on until their masters work is complete. Passersby would be denied passage. One women would even surrender a sizable coin purse to those manning the garrison. Theft? A bribe? An illegal toll? Could it have been unscrupulous highwaymen seeking to waylay the citoyens of the republiqué? Perhaps it was work the Quartier Watch, be they common thugs to some or protectors to others? Perhaps still it was the Gendarmeire working to keep the city of lights safe- Or even some holdouts from the ill fated provisional government!? Whatever the truth, its clear Widow's Walk lives up to its reputation.

Sometime well after midnight a woman sheathed in golden-hued armor is seen fleeing from Joseph Fogg's establishment, an enormous brutish monstrosity in pursuit. Once in the Quartier Publique and confronted by roused Gendarmes, the lumbering assailant retreats, having lost sight of his much smaller quarry.

Diners in the Golden Fig, however, might notice a visibly shaken female, who nursed a single cup of coffee for several hours before saying a prayer at dawn and then departing.

[WILDCAT STRIKE! Following what is said to have been an impassioned speech by one "Simon", the sailors that normally toil upon the Widow's Walk have decided not to show up the following day. True to their word, the sailors that normally walk to and from various vessels loading and unloading cargo are largely absent; only a token number of scabs labor, unable to keep the usual breakneck pace of shipping orders coming in or out.

The effects of this impromptu action are immediately felt. Supply chains are heavily disrupted as maritime imports and exports stay where they are, untouched, in crates and barrels within ships or warehouses. A few restaurants elsewhere in the city, reliant upon freshly caught fish or exotic ingredients for their dishes, either are forced to work with a limited menu or outright close. The ferry that would normally offer transport to Ghastria or Blaustein during the day does not operate. Discontent grows among the nobility who, highly inconvenienced by the sailors' strike, openly vocalize that someone ought to show them "their place".

It is said the strike will end tomorrow and the sailors will return to work that morning, yet others are unsure as to if this will truly be the case..]

The stylized emblem of a Phoenix rising from ash, and the numeral, "I," beneath it in the midst of a reef suggests that these men are from 1e Bande de La Compagnie du Phénix. By noon, a hundred stand mustered and regimented, boarding two separate vessels outbound for some distant location, the Dame d'Estellier and her retinue, the Garde de Commandement, sallying out first...

...Late into that evening, the Dame d'Estellier and her retinue return wounded, battered, and covered in blood. A handful of Soldats disembark, carrying a little over a dozen wounded, and half a dozen dead. The main contingent of the force did not return until several hours later, bringing crates of cargo of salvaged arms and armors. Dockworkers whisper, that dozens of Falkovnian Zweihänders were among the collected items -- Perhaps nearing forty, followed by their beaked helms, and Invidian-styled armors and weapons pushing the collection into the hundreds. These were stored in warehouses thereafter, the Zweihänders seeming to be marked as trophies of sorts. Most notably, nearly all of the breastplates had been compromised by penetrations from musket balls.]

For whatever they may need these two individuals all of a sudden is not clear, but in the morning, Simon Brosse returned, working closely with his sailors, and despite lurid promises of a strike from him and the solidarity of sailors around him, there is none. Not yet at least.

It is very possible he is not afraid to rally the sailors as needed in future, but he keeps the docks steady with a grim expression; there is a lurking anger in his eyes clear as day for anyone to see as he goes about his work.

In lesser rumor, it seems there is a concerted effort of late that the docks are being outfitted with a wealth of lanterns by local means. Whether this has any effect on the criminals at large in the nights of course, is uncertain.
If they are knocked down, they are replaced in the mornings, as pointless it may seem against the tide of thugs, bootleggers, and smugglers alike.

In the dead of night, someone painted a wall in the Quartier Marchand. Although hurried, the piece managed to be effective. Above it, dripping in bold letters: "VENENUM".

A buxom lady of hoarfrost hair wielding frills, laughter, and a blood smeared bone-saw stands indomitable over a corpse. With one stiletto planted in its back she reveals too much stocking, as her pointed look all but says: "The doctor will see you now."

A Warden of Ezra with cheerful disposition is spied posting notices about the district; she greets all who she encounters, offers aide to those who appear to need it, and spends time offering healing and comforts to those that accept – at whatever cost to time and resource may be required. She encourages those that see her posting the notices to attend.

The notices indicate an upcoming Fifth Day Sermon (https://www.nwnravenloft.com/forum/index.php?topic=61261.0) to be held at the Ste. Mere – and identify the Warden as Abigail Shuttleworth, the woman holding the event.

There, screeches, loud thuds, inhuman wails and lightning discharges can be seen even from far away, all clues that it is not with ruffians he is fighting with.

Far from Maison da la Vue, the city's dockworkers and sweatshop toilers hear and care little of the excess of the rich and noble as the Lady-Governor's Fete occurs across the water. Word spreads, however, of an announcement from the Lady-Governor herself; the outcome of a joint investigation between Dementlieu's Gendarmerie Nationale and its institutions of justice to uncover the murderer of former Councilor Josephine Chantreaux, prior to the Revolution of 770. The declaration that slain Ouvrier-folk hero Guy Maurice pulled the trigger sends waves of anger throughout the city's Falkovnian refugee population, many of whom owe Chantreaux their lives and the lives of their children. Scattered brawls break out between hawk-branded workers and Maurice's native supporters, with a handful of stabbings and beatings resulting in bodies in alleyways on either side of the disagreement.

The tranquillity of the day in the Quartier Marchand is shattered by the sound of arguing voices, then several shots fired, likely from one of the upper floors of Novak's Rentals. True to the Marchand's character, few people react to this.

The off-duty gendarme Dorian de Sauvre is then seen entering Novak Rentals. He runs out a few moments later, blowing a whistle and flagging down a pair of Gendarmes, before leading them back again into Novak's.

A while later, he is seen leading a distraught-looking Madeleine Voland out of Novak's, towards the Quartier Publique. The two Gendarmes exit a while later, carrying a large, mutated humanoid body between them...

The weather in the Baie is rough this morning, a strong gale blowing in from the west that makes prudent captains forestall setting their sails, at least for the day. Thunder rolls south of Pierre du Morte, the flashes of lightning illuminating in miniature through fog and the distance of leagues all the way to the docks of Port-a-Lucine. The folk of the Marchand shake their head at the disruption to business, and a few others say a prayer for whatever fresh misery the storm might bring for the huddled masses within Dementlieu's island prison.

The Harlot's Razor, having limped back to safe harbor after last month's storm, finishes her repairs and sets right out to sea. A handful off mercenaries joins her, and whispers along the docks say the Red Vardo Traders have struck some accord with Captain Gamelet Deneuve that will secure a tidy windfall for both the Traders and the Razor's crew. They return the following evening, the crew somber faced and the red-and-black clad traders as inscrutable as ever. More notable is the malnourished and broken assemblage of humanity disgorged by the vessel. These unfortunates are feted and have their wounds looked to at the headquarters of the Red Vardo Traders, and those with families recount a tale of enslavement and abuse at the hands of criminals unknown. Florence Clémenceau herself sees the rescued common folk of the city escorted to the Gendarmerie to recount their tales in the coming days, and a surge of goodwill to House Clemenceau and her crimson-and-black clad retainers swells in the city, at least for the moment.

Panic sets in among a subset of moneylenders, merchants, and traders in the Quartier Marchand when news breaks that a large shipment of Bellegarde Consortium goods was lost to bandits while traveling south to the city of Mortigny, vanished beneath the trees of the Champs Silencieux. A half dozen Bellegarde men are reputed to have been killed, among them a handful amateur agents and notable one promising company man. His wife is reputed to have had the foresight to find herself in the arms of a son of boardmember Johan Phfalz, whispered to have been seeking solace for her grief for a week before her beloved husband's death. Alarm among investors is short-lived, as promises and guarantees made on the trade result in only a small loss of capital despite the magnitude of the missing shipment.

Picked up by a Mordentish Trade Vessel, the crewman has been returned to Port-A-Lucine and as of the 3rd Day, nothing further has been said for mention.

Despite arriving in force, Councilor Andrei Palascu enters what is effectively the seat of power for House Clemenceau alone. When he departs, some minutes later, it is with a jaunty step and a whistle upon his lips. Some days after its departure, Le Délice, a Bellegarde ship captained by Esther-Chétienne Abbadie limps back into Port-a-Lucine. Its sails are badly ravaged, and it's clear by its exhausted and bedraggled crew that ship has been through mist-wreathed hells and back. It becomes apparent, however, that its ungainly arrival is not alone a matter of frayed lines and a skeleton crew. When the Bellegarde crewmen come ashore, they unload an over-stuffed hold's worth of rice and with it, delicacies; barrels of strange shellfish, eels, squids, crates of exotic fruits like persimmons and loquats, fine hinoki chests of spices and sauces the defy description to the Dementlieuse pallet. After that comes the silks and teas, and then the jewels; pearls and jade. Generous payments are distributed to the widows and children of those common men who did not survive the journey, but for the nobility and their merchant friends, Rokushima Táiyoo has relinquished a vast trove of reward through the Way of Venomous Tears.

Some shots echo through the Quartier Marchand. What's unusual is that it's not coming from the Rue des Pistolets. Gendarmerie Patrols find only a pool of blood, and no body...

Two women wearing blue are repeatedly seen going back and forth with heavy crates and carts in the second warehouse, which seems to have recently acquired a new owner. Only a blue bird symbol is left on a sign outside the door.

Boxes and the like are seen being moved out of the Mutinied Sailor, with some time after new crates of items being moved inside.

Once more, the De Sauvre foundation does the rounds, buying up debt contracts from the city's least well-off in order to forgive them. Rumours speak of dozens of contracts being bought up and torn up, freeing many families from the shackles of wage-slavery.

Yet this generosity does little to change the fundamentals of the city, and the families freed today remain in the same circumstances that saw them entrapped before...

A young man, toting about a stack of papers, is said to have been asking around the presses for a group that meets within.

Even more crates, and now marble stone are seen being moved into the basement of the Mutinied Sailor. Clearly some heavy work was being done within the basement, based off of the noise coming from the depths of it.

As the day wears on, activity starts to flourish around Warehouse One as cleaners, movers, and builders move in and out of the warehouse, directed by a woman with wine-red hair. Seems the warehouse has a new owner, though it remains to be seen what she will use it for.

[Some sailors among the Marchand speak of having seen a ridiculous drunken scene one morning. Apparently coming from L'Artiste, a blonde and tall woman hoisted a short man in a purple cape over her shoulder, all the way up to the Broken Spire. Some call them foolish, others worse, and others yet laugh about it.]

[Just before dawn, in rapid successions, sounds of explosions and flashes of light are perceived near the docks. The ordeal doesn't last a minute.  Those who dared to peek through their windows swear they saw a short individual enshrouded in dark magics. In the morning, those who arrive in the area find the cobblestones under the ramp that ascends to the gates to be scorched. Small fragments of gravestones and tiny stone debris are left scattered over and around the marks, something was blown to pieces. Thankfully no structure receive any blast damage. On the docks itself two creatures known as "Reavers" were found cut asunder.]

A submission is left in the dropbox of the Society of the Erudite by a notably dark-skinned elf. They do not stay for long.
