Title: Stubborn Ethernet
Post by: Ramika on July 19, 2009, 02:40:02 AM
So, here's the deal.

My laptop (well, it's not really -mine-... but anyway) for some reason refuses to acknowledge internet coming in through an ethernet cord. There's nothing disabled, the firewall has been both active and inactive... I tried plugging it directly into the Comcast router, restarting that router, restarting the computer, disabling the wireless...

It acknowledges the internet is -there-, but it doesn't -work-.

Any ideas?

could be a problem at the provider really. has it been like that for a long time?

It works completely fine on the desk top that it's plugged into, but once I disconnect that cord and put it into the laptop. Nothing. I think it's a laptop issue, I'm just not sure -what-.

Try this especially if you use your laptop for work and the connection there isn't wireless.

If you're using IE, go into tools --> internet options --> connections -->  lan settings --> then look at the box under proxy server.  If it's checked , uncheck it.

If you're using Firefox, go into tools --> options -->  Advanced -->  settings -->  check and see if "proxy" is checked.  If it is, check "no proxy".

I had this happen with my laptop.  It was trying to use the work (proxy) connection which I obviously didn't have at home.

I hope that made sense.

You could try to rule out whether its a hardware or software problem.  To to this, you could boot from a live CD (such as Ubuntu for example).  If the Internet connections works from within the live CD, then at least you know that your hardware is good.

TCP/IP stack failure!

Like Boompowclash is saying, it could be someething as minor as an IP error, or missing IP.  If it's being used as an either/or with the desktop, the IP will probably need to be identical.
If it's being used in addition to the desktop you may need to get another IP assigned by your ISP, depending on the setup of the router.
