Title: Barovia - Village of Barovia
Post by: Heretic on November 29, 2008, 08:43:59 AM
Widows dressed in black are seen walking the streets in grief, the local community offers support to the women that lost their husbands, donations and food are being taken at The Blood of the Vine, where some mourn in their own way the farmers that were lost in the tragedy.

Several pesants are seeing reinforcing their doors with thick planks of wood, the attacks are still fresh on everyone's minds, people take every precaution to avoid being the next victim. Speculations as to the nature of the beast are vague, many attribute the recent carnages to one or some vicious neuri.

The small shrine to Ezra, recently damaged by fire in an attack by a particularly cunning neuri, has been returned to its former state.  The marks of fire and smoke have been scrubbed clean, as has the blood of the unfortunate soul targetted in the attack.  The scorched grass outside already mixed by rain and snow into the earth beneath.

Locals speak of an air of loss that clings to place now, and to the young half-breed that tends it.

Most scoff when mention of it comes up, claiming that the Dilisniya poisoners and their whore god have simply reaped their due for the dead in Vallaki.

The small and meek Ovidiu arrived to the village a few months ago only, earning the glares of the gossiping population. Some rumors associates her to Noica, another fool from Vallaki. Certain women of the inn who spoke with Crina managed to gather a few information about her. A son in Vallaki, a family to care for. Whatever happened to *her* husband. Maybe he fell under some neuri's claws like the widows who still gathers at the Blood of the vine to weep on the still abandoned tables.

Seemingly bored and uninterested, the guard is often seen headed along the Old Svalich road either east or west to continue her patrols. Cleaning off branches and trees fallen along the road and killing wolves that would wander too close to the city. A large stack of dark wolf hide is growing in a barn next to the burgomaster's guest house, waiting for a better purpose some suggest.

In the local Temple of the Morninglord people going there attending rituals are meeting a rather silent and handsome man always there. Rumours are spreading rather quick, as the man has been seen often speaking to Vicar Miklos about vampires and witches. Someone also state that the man has been more than once harassed by a woman witch inside the temple itself. These rumours keeps him more isolated than ever. He seems scared to speak to any unknown people.

A wandering anchorite tends the small Ezrite shrine at the Village of Barovia, some recent signs of upkeep there.

A visage that could have been Ezra herself, a woman covered in mists, is seen giving coins to beggars.

A single ravens feather is left by the door of the diminutive church, a scroll tied together with a green ribbon.

Quote
Holy Sainte Marle, Icon of her Sainted Image,
Guide us, show us Your Path,
Help those in need,
Give strength to the weak,
comfort the sorrowful,
Kiss us with the kisses of her mouth,
For your love is better than wine,
sainte Marle, all who seek your help,
Experience your unfailing protection,
Amen.

Those around the village and in particular speak of a heated argument between two of the 'sun kisser cultists' both arguing over the other's path's and morality. The two were last seen by two light carriers heading into the streets nearing dawn.

When dawn finally came there was a stain of blood on the streets of the fair village just outside the temple's gates. The skies seemed overcast and cloudly for most of the first parts of the morning.

Neither 'sun kisser' was seen returning to the temple grounds after their argument.

"Ridicule, pathetic, and unbecoming of Being Barovian."

Words describing the latest spectacle as witnessed by a few Village guards in front of the big decadent city gates of the Municipality of Vallaki spread at the Village of Barovia, where this gossip always finds receptive ears. The word on the lips of guards speak of the lost ways of their comrades in Vallaki, to allow the Outlander to wear the uniform. They speak in contempt and disgust of their lacking ways, of the other reality Vallaki faces when it comes to the domestic invasion of the outlander ways into their lives.

Talks are fueled by hearsay, by urban legends about native Vallaki women marrying filthy outlanders and alien races. The talks are shared in front of a warm fire, at the Blood of the Vine or on duty; the people feeling somewhat, distant from their bigger cousin; Municipality of Vallaki.

A coppery-skinned, long-haired elf in the lightest of fey armor regularly frequents the Village of Barovia carrying shipments of good from Vallaki. When gossip about the outlander garda comes up among the locals, he can often be seen frowning. But he appears to be wise enough to only share his opinion when asked, which naturally doesn't seem to happen much, if at all. The locals tolerate him and do business with him, but he too remains just a fey outlander.

Some several nights ago the sounds of a skirmish could be heard in the streets and those brave enough to peek out of their windows witnessed a motely band of outlanders making their way to the Morning Lord's temple. A pretty young woman in revealing attire appeared to be carrying the pitiful, skinless remains of what could only be a child.

A short time later two of the swordsmen within the band, a scarfaced young man and a towering bulwark of armour and steel were seen in the Vine almost drawing blades on each other after much heated discussion.

The Church of Hala celebrates the
New Year on October 31st, normally a day of
dread for many people across the dread realms.
This day marks the end of the harvests in many
places, but to the Halites it is a day for
celebration. In the Church of Hala, this
celebration is known as Samhain (So-wen).
Halites often give out gifts of fruit and
vegetables on this day to the poor and bless
small children, regarding them with praise.
Young boys in particular are held in esteem,
though girls are not unfairly regarded, for they
are the future mothers that will give life to the
next generation. Iron is often hung on walls and
above doors and windows by Halites on this day.

Some adventurers have seen a Vistani child making a doll, with her tiny hands, in the Zarovan camp by the Tser Pool. Some are ready to swear they saw the doll moving and then, after it exploded in an outburst of smelly gore, a thick mist appeared. The little doll was dressed as a waitress and with a little tray in her tiny hands, made probably of copper. As it is, the girl who made the doll is also rumoured to be educated directly by Madame Eva.

Locals talk of a shadey man, entering the village from the seldom used southern entrance. He had been carrying a woman on his shoulder, who was unconsious, her head covered in bloodstained bandages, under which tufts of red hair were noticeable. Well-dressed not the type to fare in the swamps. The man carried her all along the way, sometimes talking out loud, as if he was argueing with himself. He aimed clearly for the morninglordian temple. Some labourers that were accepting the free meals of the priest, later told the man handed over a fair amount of gold to the priest, and only said three words. "Tend to her..." than he put the womans body down gently, looked back once more, on her, and left the temple, without a word.

" Oh nu! My chickens.. my livelihood! " - Farmer Petre Dimitrivich

It has been said that terrible creatures came during the Old Night's reign and shattered the unguarded and unwatched farmsteads and homes on the outskirts of the Village. Several bodies of drunks and livestock, slaughtered in ritual manner prove this happening to most eyes and there were several instances of graffiti in blood, ash, and feces about the area of destruction. The graffiti is simply an unblinking eye. What terrible things would have done this?

When night came many awoke by the blown horns of guards who rushed out of a building near the famous inn, soon after blasts where heard and screams of dying men where the only sounds heard in the usualy silent streets of the village.
Those living near the inn heard a conversation between the rebels and the lampligther he was suppose to deliver a message, it got louder again when the ezrite delegation poured out into the street to aid the lampligther against the rebels, but further bloodshed was prevented.

One of a Barovian man, clawed and bitten by something with sharp claws and teeth. He was found by the warehouse in a pool of his own blood.

The other is of a Barovian woman, a bloody trail leaded two where her body laid. It was mangled. Her head was removed and blood was all over the walls where her body lie. Something ripped open her abdomen exposing entrails. She looked to be partly eaten by something.  A witness describe seeing the killer as something that was there then disappeared. Next thing the body was being dragged off, the witness didn't wish to pursue for fear of his own life.

More of the citizens and guards are becoming sick with a cough. Even more start develop swellings of black lymph nodes and glands filled puss.  A few are coughing up blood and their skin is turning black. Many have died from the disease and the amount of deaths start to increase rapidly. The healers are at a loss trying to find a cure. No magic or known remedy seems to work. Some of the healers also have caught the disease.

A black goo can be found in and around the village. It stinks of rot and decay.

Also reports keep coming in about something digging up the graves in the cemetery or dragging corpses from the crypts. From the rumors it is said that it looks like something is eating the remains of the dead. It is also stated that the corpses and body parts are littering the cemetery. It is gotten so bad that rumors of stray dogs can be seen in the streets carrying human remains. Even though the cemetery gets cleaned it seems to be a never ending battle.

The fey woman appeared several months pregnant one early morning. Word around the tavern was the two were seen at times often sharing a room for the past many weeks before hand, and the man was said to have been helping around the village where he could, but always wearing a thick garbed hood. Perhaps it was just timing but after a few weeks the rumors also of a large shadowy monster that had been seen in glimpses during full moons have also passed.

Several animals have been slaughtered in a farm not far from the Village. Some of the animals have been partially eaten, but some were just killed. The marks on the animals and the brutally of the attack suggests a large beast, with claws and sharp teeth, but an empty bottle of a renowed dementlieuse wine found along with the carcasses create doubt about what could have done that.

Those forced to visit the dreary village of Barovia can hear the talk of the townsfolk speak on a robbery that took place in the dead of night within Bildrath's Mercantile. Among the items stolen from the old merchant were a pair of priceless emerald necklaces, several silver chalices, fancy brooches, silver ingots mined from the bygone days when the Wagner Silver Mines worked, and numerous other items of value.

Some free to take skillfully crated silk clothes, with some patches of worg pelts, start appearing at the local tailoring shop. Worgs have also reduced in numbers. A silent man walks the wood and the village.

A young blonde woman is seen frequenting the graveyard behind the temple.  Each time carrying with her a collection of freshly picked spring flowers.  She spends a good while kneeling before an unmarked grave, occasionally weeping.  She leaves the flowers and a small note behind, departing briefly before sunset.

[the note reads]
Quote
My Dearest Love, It seems like a lifetime we have been apart, and I nearly rejoined you this day.  The past few years have been difficult.  I fear all too soon I will fail in my promise to find a way home, and it grows ever more difficult to not simply ignore the call of life and spend eternity with you in the mists.

Recently a greencloaked figure, roughly the height of a child if not slightly taller, has been sighted around the dreary settlement.
Rumour suggests that they entered the woods to look for the stone circle, after paying a visit to the haunted house of Mad Mary.
Whatever intent the figure has, they seem to be scanning the entire town and outlying environs.

The first law of Barovia broken, spat upon! Day breaks, and Count Strahd's own taxes have been stolen, pillaged from the village of Barovia by perfidious hands! The village guard mill in force, searching, and dark visitors come to ask questions; tall, with cruelty in their tone and bearing.

A carriage rolls into the village the next day, and the Burgomeister herself rises to meet the visiting Count Strahd von Zarovich, welcoming him into her estate - a very grim-looking Count.

A very young woman arrives in the village, passes into the graveyard, and disappears from sight--although throughout the night the sounds of battle and enraged undead echo from beneath the ground.

The next morning the woman reappears, her armor covered in gore, her face in tears. She washes and changes into a simple frock to spend the entire day praying and ministering to the sick in the hospice, healing many.

At sunset the cycle begins again. It does not appear that the woman--who wears a Wayfarer Kinship amulet--ever sleeps.

In the dead of night, something stirs in the woods and marshes surrounding the Village of Barovia. Glimpses of a figure, stick-thin and ragged. A man lurching between the twisted trees through banks of swirling mist, dragging a rusted felling axe behind him.
A single word breaks the silence of those nights. A howling lament filled with inhuman rage:
'Mina'

A loud, cacophonous battle erupts during the midnight hours in the graveyard of the Sanctuary of Blessed Succor. Roars and screams can be heard from what can be described as a large entity that rampaged through the noapte - destroying everything and anyone who dare defy it. Many brave warriors and villagers taking their stand, to little or no avail.

As the dawn caressed the land once more, all seemed to be normal. Save for one man, carried away by Morninglordians into their mortuary as the Barovians of the village carried on, seemingly  as if nothing had happened.

A small congregation gathered in the cemetery behind the Sanctuary of the Blessed Succor.  The assembled were all clad in the robes of the Morninglord faith as orisons were raised in tribute to the dawn.  The dead was interred, laid to eternal rest and accompanied by the solemn hymns of hope synonymous with the faith.

The pervasive rainfall did not drench the spirits of the reverent assembly even as they returned to their temple with a look of pious resolve.

Village inhabitants still awake in the late hours of the night murmur quietly of black silhouettes caught in their periphery outside the window of their homes: silent, and still. Those brave enough to attempt to focus directly on these forms see only but an outline of lamplight bending over their humanoid shapes for a second before vanishing.

Some claim it a trick of the eye or blaming the lack of sleep. Others know better.

The small shrine to Ezra in the Village of Barovia seems to be tended now by a handsome blonde male anchorite with a bright smile. Occasionally a female anchorite with brown hair and caring and compassionate eyes and a tall and rather fetching Templar are seen as well assisting the blonde male anchorite. Inhabitants note that he speaks no Balok, but seems very polite offering courteous greetings, food, and offerings of coin in the trade tounge with a heavy Mordentish accent. The gardens of the shrine seem to have been prepared for planting, and posters note that the gardens will be used to grow food for the citizens of the Village of Barovia. The shrine is still bare save for the altar, candles, and prayer mats, but it is sparkling clean and welcoming.

Fewer howls are heard around the perimeter of the Village of Barovia. Villagers whisper about food being delivered to the citizens around the Village and of the sick being healed during visits from a young blonde Ezrite who heads out most mornings and comes back covered in the blood of worgs from around the village. He is quick to greet passersby with a smile and seeks to assist those in need. Also, the Shrine of Dutiful Mercy seems to be clean inside and out, and it is obviously occupied again.

Word has it that the Shrine of Dutiful Mercy is again empty. The young blonde Ezrite noted for his presence in the area of late collected what few belongings he had.  Gave alms to the poor and said farewell to the few he had spoken to regularly telling them the Grand Scheme had called him to service at the Redoubtable Chapel of Raduta Keep. With short blessings, he left the Village singing, albeit poorly, hosanas to Ezra.

A man who identified himself as Edouard, rightful Burgomaster of Krofburg, was heard to be loudly declaiming the unlawful theft of his property by his brother and his exile from Krofburg for many years. The crowd listened to him mostly for entertainment, and were eventually worn down enough by his ranting to ignore him for the rest of the evening as he grew increasingly drunk.

A few might hear, though, that he was being watched by several men in dark clothes, who after the night concluded departed directly towards the sinister spires of Castle Ravenloft.

A hooded woman weeps before the clergy of the Cult of the Morninglord in front of the Sanctuary of Blessed Succor beginning at dawn in a torrential downpour. By dusk they part ways amicably, and the woman enters the cemetery with a wicker mask in hand. The disquiet of ghoul and ghast is quelled when a ray of sunlight reaches down from the night sky, rendering them unto ash.

To go missing from the village of Barovia is not an uncommon occurrence, though for a guard to disappear without even the slightest trace is certainly something of note, something that shakes what little sense of safety exists in the villagers. The guard Mihai has vanished, leaving no note or sign in his absence. Old Noapte, many fancy, has taken him to visit his family.

The grave of Mihai's son goes unattended in the coming weeks, where once it was visited daily by the man. The flowers die and the once-clean stone is no longer kept washed; obscured by moss and dirt, just another name forgotten, disappearing to the mists like that of his father.

A number of small, lovingly tended stations have sprung up in the Village of Barovia. The cooking pots are filled with simple warm stews and flanked by lit candles and written prayers to the Morninglord, praising hope and endurance. An acolyte of the god makes her rounds between the stations, often keeping a careful eye out for any troublemakers.

The acolyte also spends much time in the outskirts after a recent wolf attack, helping build barricades and spending time watching for more attacks.

Three figures, not far from the Village, shrouded under the guise of night, chant in guttural tones - ushering something pitch black. They step within, and vanishing into the damming darkness. Before long, they return with a feline companion, dispersing soon after. The remnants of a fire leave a strange scent about the area, a mound of dirt where grass once lay seemed burnt over from the intensity of whatever flame once resided there.
