Title: Spells - Spells with only Verbal Components
Post by: kenpen on July 30, 2008, 12:08:39 AM
Would it be possible to remove the animations for spells with only verbal components? There aren't many of them, but I noticed using some of them the other day that the character still does this really big and obvious magical dance, waves his arms around, and pretty much makes it obvious that he's casting a spell.

I would love if spells casted silent or stilled had either no animation/no sound, can that be done?

Silent spells have no sound.  Dribo silent cast quite a bit, and I've never had it make the sound doing it.  As for the still spells, it would be nice if they worked properly, and you could cast still spells while seated/prone/upside-down/whatever.  Not sure if that could be coded though, without a change to the hard code.

Cool.  Remove the animations for Verbal Only Spells, the Sounds for Silent Spells, and then.  Add material components to balance out.

Would definitely making being a sorcerer rock harder to have material components.

But, eh... what a pain in the ass for everyone else doing the running around and collecting of basic crap. I frankly don't want any more hours of gathering and haggling over simple components, RPing all the lame parts of bouncing all over around gathering herbs up and pieces of animals up. Maybe in theory it's a cool idea. And it would make casting some spells a lot harder and definitely more expensive. Heck, maybe low-magic wise it would help things out.

But seeing as how all the other cool parts of being a wizard are hard to come by here (researching of new spells, spells outside NWNs engine, personalized spellcasting) I don't see why all the extra boring parts should be heaped on top.

in PnP my DM used to allow us to buy a *adventuring mage pouch* basicly everything common from dust to rat tails, for a less common item (lets say that huge diamond worth for resurrection) we'd have to quest for it

Components would be fine under two conditions:

1.  They're easily available (meaning you can buy them from the few mage shops we have in the server at fair prices).

2.  They work by means of generalized components, not individual.  Meaning, there's an item that works universally for all level 1, level 2, level 3, etc.  I say this, because it would be too annoying to buy components to sort yourself out for two people, and then have a third person come in asking for the buffs you can't provide now.

Stay on topic.

This one is asking if it's possible to remove animations when casting spells with only verbal components. I could split this topic into a spell component item thread since it is something that has come up in another thread as well.

If it is possible to have this modified for still spelll to have no movement animations, I think it would greatly benefit roleplay.

True strike even, shouldn't have a somatic component.  It's verbal only, hence no animation.

I agree with removing the animation from still spells and spells without somatic components; might resolve some possibilities for meta-gaming, i.e. my wizard gets tied up but perhaps not gagged and decides polymorphing into a fairy might just save her bacon -  I trust our playerbase, but I don't want it to come down to (hypothetcially):

"Hey, you're tied up! You shouldn't be casting."
"It's verbal only."
"...oh."

I have my disagreement with components with, at least, certain spells - would mean Lizuca going from "I'll cost 1,000 fang" for a level 2 player to "a diamond the size of your friggin' head." ;)

With the soon implementation of scroll scribbling, scrolls are next to disappear from the merchants. Scary isnt it?
