Ravenloft’s mists can reach into any world and draw unsuspecting travelers into the Realm of Dread. No world is safe. Many
of the most powerful people within Ravenloft have been drawn here from worlds such as Faerûn and Oerth, among others.
While these mists are the most common form of entering Ravenloft, there are also a few permanent one-way portals on some
worlds that allow access to the Land of Mists (but, unfortunately, they do not allow exit). The portals that exist in each
known world are listed below:
The spirit of Sir Marcus Malvoy, who haunts the Land of Mists, claims to have come from the shattered Anuirean Empire on the
continent of Cerilia. If his story is to be believed, he and his entourage chased a fearsome beast into a cave near his lands,
and when they emerged found themselves in Ravenloft. Shortly thereafter the spirit of Malvoy attacked those he was speaking to,
despite his earlier claims of friendliness, so anything he claims of his homeworld is suspect at best.
Life is harsh under the dark sun of the burnt world Athas, and few have time for scholarly expeditions or
sagely theorizing. Therefore, there have been no confirmed reports of any permanent portals to Ravenloft on Athas. If one were
to search for a portal, though, a likely place may be the haunted ruins of the city-state Kalidnay.
Krynn is believed to have two portals. On the continent of Taladas, where the Steamwall Mountains meet Blackwater Glade,
lies a cave. Inside this cave is a mist-filled doorway, magical and glowing. The other portal is in Ansalon, in the wilderness
near the ruins of Xak Tsaroth. Any details of this portals operation or precise location have been lost over the years.
There are currently no known portals to Ravenloft on this world, though much of its past lies forgotten in the wake
of the many wars that have scarred it in recent years. Old magic is constantly being rediscovered by adventurers, so it
is surely a matter of time before someone stumbles upon a misty portal to the Realm of Dread.
Toril is also believed to have a least two portals. The first is on the continent of Faerûn, in the Greycloak Hills, on the
western edge of the Anauroch desert. According to rumor, a pit somewhere in these hills leads to Ravenloft. The second is in
the eastern realms of Kara-Tur. There is a small nameless island east of the main continent and south of Wa. In the morning
following a new moon, a mist rolls in from the sea and gently laps at the island’s shore. Anyone standing in the surf is transported
to Ravenloft.
There are at least three permanent portals on Oerth. The first is believed to be somewhere in Ulek. Just below the summit
of the Lortmil mountains lies an alcove cut into the rock, containing a misty opening. This opening is allegedly the portal
to Ravenloft. The second portal on Oerth is rumored to lie deep within the dungeons of the ruined Castle Greyhawk, constructed
by the mad archmage Zagyg many years ago. Supposedly this portal is one of the many traps Zagyg made to keep intruders from
looting his fortress. Finally, in the far west, in the Dry Steppes near the salt lake of Udrukankar, the ancient Bakluni Stone
Circles, called Tovag Baragu, are infamous for their ability to connect to other planes and planets. The wizards of the Circle
of Eight, along with the unlikely assistance of the evil demigod Iuz, once forced the lich-turned-demigod Vecna through Tovag
Baragu’s portals and into Ravenloft.

There have been no reliable reports of permanent portals on Mystara, though there might be one in the haunted ruins of Koriszegy
Keep, just west of the Radlebb Woods in the Kingdom of Karameikos.
While there is no documented evidence of portals to Ravenloft in the multitude of the Outer Planes, travelers in the Ethereal
plane note that it is possible to be trapped by Ravenloft’s mists without any warning, as the Ethereal is a constant swirl of mist
and fog. There are no known color curtains for entering the Realm of Dread, and Ethereal travelers are warned against entering
curtains of unrecorded colors. Sigil, also known as “The City of Doors”, in the Outlands, almost certainly possesses at least one
portal into Ravenloft, though it has never been catalogued.
The innumerable alien worlds in space visited by spelljamming craft could possible contain portals to Ravenloft, though
most spelljamming pilots do not have the time to explore these worlds thoroughly enough to discover them. Of all the star
systems that might contain a portal to the Realm of Dread, Darkspace is the most likely candidate. This system was utterly
destroyed and its sun was snuffed out by the powerful vampire T’laan, who sought to enslave the people of the neighboring star
system Greatspace as feeding stock, since Darkspace’s sun was dead and life no longer existed within the sphere. The sun was
eventually reignited and T’laan defeated, though his corpse disappeared in a bank of fog.
