From Knight to Dawn

Allek burned his old memoir. He tore each page and tossed it into the flames. It felt liberating to rid himself of the stress of the past. When Dumitru Miklos died, Allek felt the grief and pain hard. It was not only the death of his friend, but the deaths of everyone he had ever lost. All this time he had hid his pain behind the visage of a warm smile. When Dumitru died, the grief of loss hit him all at once. Allek felt weighted down and tired. He was angry. So many people. People better then him died, yet he still remained. I could not understand why.

Before his death, Dumitru personally went to Ilie to recommend that Allek become vicar of Vallaki. At first Allek was proud and happy. It was always his dream to become vicar, but the death the old man put things into perspective for Allek. He no longer wanted to be vicar. He saw no qualities within himself. He felt unfit to lead the flock in Vallaki. There was another though who showed aspects of a good leader. It was Loredana. She reminded him of Vicar Isabella in many ways. She was already doing all the things that Allek should have been doing. Instead of doing those things, Allek was lazy and refused to do little more then keep his prayers and heal those in need.

Allek didn't feel at peace anymore. His close friend Ilu was away and he felt he had no one to speak to about his issues. He wanted to feel good. The church was growing and each week he seemed to welcome more to the flock, yet Allek felt empty inside. He felt as if all these new friends would eventually die and leave him behind. Hunting undead was partially to blame for these losses. The violence and horror of fighting the monsters of old night were dangerous and Allek felt with each passing day that doing such hunts only endangers the flock further. Violence did not seem the answer. Violence doesn't spread hope, it only spreads despair, and Allek had that in abundance.

He wanted nothing to do with hunts any longer. He had given his armor away and it felt liberating to him. It was the armor that vicar Miklos gave him so many years ago. It has been with him for so long, yet he felt that in the hands of someone more worthy, it can do better. Allek no longer deserved it. He had his robes, and that was all the protection he needed. Michael was a good man and deserving of armor that held such history. Violence in general had little use for Allek anymore. He decided that he would just rely on the protection of the Lightcarriers from then on. He would refuse to fight, and if that lead to his death, he accepted that. He didn't want a funeral, no grand send off speaking of how good he was. He wanted to fade away and be forgotten. He wanted to see his old friends. He wanted no fanfare. He didn't want his brothers and sisters to feel the pain of loss. Allek felt lower then he ever had before. He yearned for a helping hand, but instead of talking to someone about his pain, he simply smiled.
