Echoes of Deep Heaven
« on: December 24, 2016, 10:46:48 PM »
/// [OOC note: All of the posts below consist of things I painted as part of RP with my Gothic Earth China bard and refer to things she would have painted IC for other characters or for herself, reflecting her path and experiences since she has been brought to the land of the Mists. ]

*Bringing to her mind's eye the gates of the Grey City, Jia tried to paint from memory with the ink and brush held by a slightly shaky hand, making a wish that just for a day all the misery and danger would be lifted from the place that had become her new home. The rain drumming on the roof of Lady's Rest heralded the coming of the spring.*

Spoiler: show
The highest virtue is like water.

Since water helps the myriad creatures,

And settles, without contention,

Where no one wishes to live,

It is near to the Way.

In a house position matters.

In mental quality depth matters.

In friends kindness matters.

In speaking honesty matters.

In government order matters.

In transactions ability matters.

In actions promptness matters.

By not contending it never errs.

(from Tao Te Ching)

*One day an outlander who couldn't speak Common stepped into Lady's rest and was first given some assistance by man named Ionathan Arna and later by Echo, the oriental-looking musician, and eventually knight Audric Lacroix, with whom he seemed to have certain shared heritage. At some point pictures hastily painted in ink were employed as linguistic aid by the musician.*

/// OOC - As it happened.
Spoiler: show

*some days ago in Lady's Rest*

Jia Hwei-ru: *takes back the piece of paper with the 'house' drawing and draws the line in the middle of it, leaving the drawing on one half of it*

Jia Hwei-ru: *puts more ink on the brush  and begins to draw an indication of a daytime around it - sun, trees, birds, people... then glances over to his writing and smiles, looking pleased*

Jia Hwei-ru: Casa....

Nathaniel Kelter:  I cannot wait until you can ask him if he's Read the red reed.

Nathaniel Kelter:  *smiling*

Jia Hwei-ru: *gives Nathaniel a puzzled look and then a slightly hesitant polite smile, perhaps not quite getting it, focused as she is on her own tasks*

Jia Hwei-ru: Ludovico.....?   *indicates him*

Ludovico Brambilla:   *nods*

Ludovico Brambilla:    Si

Jia Hwei-ru:  *points to self*     Echo....

Ludovico Brambilla: *nods again* Echo

Jia Hwei-ru:  *indicates the building*  Inn....

Jia Hwei-ru: *thinks a moment and then takes out some coins and puts them in a separate piece of cloth, leaving out one*    Fang

Ludovico Brambilla:  Inn. *looks around at the walls*

Jia Hwei-ru: *shows him the coin and gives him the rest that she set aside*

Ludovico Brambilla: *watches*

Ludovico Brambilla: *Eyes widen at the pile*

Jia Hwei-ru: *offers it with a polite bow and a smile*    Take.

Jia Hwei-ru: You will need it.

Ludovico Brambilla: *looks at her uncertainly, points to himself* Per me?

Jia Hwei-ru: *nods* Yes.

Jia Hwei-ru:  *Seems very happy he has accepted it*

Ludovico Brambilla:  *takes the coins almost reverently*

Ludovico Brambilla: Non ho mai visto cosi tanti soldi.

Jia Hwei-ru:  For food and ... house ... sleep *makes a sleeping motion with face and hands and points upstairs after*

Ludovico Brambilla:  *puts them away carefully, looking around*

Ludovico Brambilla:  *looks in the direction she pointed.* Ah, per alloggio. Inn *smiles*

Jia Hwei-ru: food  *points to his plate.. assuming anything is left on it*

Ludovico Brambilla: *nods* Chi-cken.

Jia Hwei-ru: *nods, pleased as some understanding is being reached*

Jia Hwei-ru:  *frowns at the approaching dark*

Ludovico Brambilla:  *looks at the darkening windows*

Jia Hwei-ru: *looks down at her painting implements, lost in deep thought for a moment, then begins to paints a night scene with the moon and a
dark sky in ink*  - night, dark, noapte

Ludovico Brambilla: *watches* ah. Notte. Luna.

Jia Hwei-ru:  *it is almost strange for her usually calm face to take on strong emotion - but she acts out fear and anxiety*

Jia Hwei-ru:  Night...  Moon *points to moon in the drawing*

Ludovico Brambilla:  *looks around to see what she's reacting to*

Ludovico Brambilla: *turns back to the drawing*

Jia Hwei-ru: *she seems to be 'frightened' of the dark in the windows*

Ludovico Brambilla:  Hai paura della luna? La notte? *thinks to himself*

Jia Hwei-ru: *in the 'night scene' drawing she adds exactly the same looking inn/house as in the day scene*

Ludovico Brambilla:  *watches*

Jia Hwei-ru: *she then draws some woods close to the edge and some scary  werewolves running out of them*

Audric Lacroix: [The tall, decently built man entered bearing the insignia of the all-to-well-known Knight Hospitallers of Europe- including the roman
cross.  ]

Jia Hwei-ru:  *inclines her head to Audric briefly, but returns to her drawing, rather focused*

Ludovico Brambilla:  *looks at her, alarmed, and back at the picture* Cosa sono?

Audric Lacroix:  [Audric dipped his head politely to Jia.]

Jia Hwei-ru: *she then adds some -considerably smaller- people running from werewolves into the house*

Jia Hwei-ru:  *shows hiim the drawing in hope of some understanding, seemingly a little anxious at the importance of the information she is trying
to transmit*

Always it's cold on this mountain!
Every year, and not just this.
Dense peaks, thick with snow.
Black pine-trees breathing mist.
It's August before the grass grows,
Not yet autumn when the leaves fall.
Full of illusions, I roam here,
Gaze and gaze, but can't see the sky.

*A little while back, other patrons of the Broken Bell Inn may have seen a short, strongly built halfling, pose for this picture in front of a quiet and beautiful oriental-looking woman, a quill paper in her hands*

Verses from the Cold Mountain

<>

Alive in the mountains, not at rest,

My mind cries for passing years.

Gathering herbs to find long life,

Immortality eludes me still.

My field’s deep, and veiled in cloud,

But the wood’s bright, the moon’s full.

Why am I here? Can’t I go?

Heart still tied to enchanted pines!

Spoiler: show

The peach petals would like to stay,

But moon and wind blow them on.

You won’t find those ancient men,

Those dynasties are dead and gone.

Day by day the blossoms fall,

Year by year the people go.

Where the dust blows through these heights,

There once shone a silent sea.

<>

Are you looking for a place to rest?

Cold Mountain’s good for many a day.

Wind sings here in the black pines,

Closer you are, the better it sounds.

There’s an old man sitting by a tree,

Muttering about the things of Tao.

Ten years now, it’s been so long

This one’s forgotten his way home.

A person of great virtue is like the flowing water.
Water benefits all things and contends not with them.
It puts itself in a place that no one wishes to be and thus is closest to Tao.
A virtuous person is like water which adapts itself to the perfect place.
His mind is like the deep water that is calm and peaceful.
His heart is kind like water that benefits all.
His words are sincere like the constant flow of water.
His governing is natural without desire which is like the softness of water that penetrates through
hard rocks.
His work is of talent like the free flow of water.
His movement is of right timing like water that flows smoothly.
A virtuous person never forces his way and hence will not fall into error.

(Ch. 8 of Tao Te Ching).

Lonely bones can't sleep nights. Singing
insects keep calling them, calling them.

And the old have no tears. When they sob,
autumn weeps dewdrops. Strength failing

all at once, as if cut lose, and ravages
everywhere, like weaving unravelled,

I touch thread-ends. No new feelings.
Memories crowding thickening sorrow,

how could I bear southbound sails, how
wander rivers and mountains of the past?

Under this autumn moon's face of frozen
beauty, the spirit driving an old wanderer

thins away. Cold dewdrops fall shattering
dreams. Biting winds comb cold through

bones. The sleeping-mat stamped with my
seal of sickness, whorled grief twisting,

there's nothing to depend on against fears.
Empty, sounds beginning nowhere, I listen.

Wu-t'ung trees, bare and majestic, sing
sound and echo clear as a ch'in's lament.
