Word quickly spreads of Count Strahd von Zarovich's reclamation over Barovia, signifying the end of Lyssa's terrorizing reign. As one tyrant is replaced by the former, the xenophobic populace sheds little relief. Fear remains on the minds of the serfdom as an uncertain and dark future now rests over the country, like a gray shadow permeating with despair.




In the coming days following the assault on Castle Ravenloft, the country begins to mend as the Count reestablishes his rule over his domain. Misinterpreted rumors come to rest surrounding the man who fronted Lyssa's annexation as shouts flood the streets. town and village criers begin to announce the coming of Zladko von Zarovich, distant cousin of the Count, descendant of Strum von Zarovich, and Agent of the Barovian Court. Vassals and holders of estate jealously quibble over the Count's favor shown toward the recently appointed Boyar Lord; having been granted the fief of Vernik, a small Hamlet and border keep near the Bloodfang Hills in southern Barovia.

The ambitious Boyar quickly builds an infamous reputation among his subjects. Drafting villagers and forcing them into service, he quickly establishes a Militia upon his arrival. Zladko's ruthless disposition is met with subjugation and obedience as the Vernik people begin to learn his rule is beyond contestation. The few who have resisted have been put to the stake to be made an example. their skewered remains line the forlorn forest, left for the indigenous goblyns to feast upon...
