Title: The Redoubtable Chapel, Raduta Keep, Wachter Province, Barovia
Post by: Maryn on May 13, 2007, 09:20:41 PM
A hooded woman in black is seen entering and leaving the Zeklos keep on a weekly basis.  Often she is accompanied by a man in shining armor, Vasham, known to be the current captain of the Boyar's guard.  The guards seem to recognize her and let them pass, but her business there is unknown.

*The towerguards have noted a young woman in a rather shiney plate armour has started to lead small groups of adventurers into the Boyars family crypt. Oddly enough they have allways seemed to leave with as many members as they enter though they did appear battered at times and dont allways leave as a group.
The guards are puzzled as to why the woman and her companions would go to the crypt as they obviously arent related to Boyar Von Zeklos.*

Strange rumours come from the Zeklos keep. Visisters speak of a nightly visitor, a ghost some say, that wanders the halls and corridors of the keep at night. Those visitors whom see her are all scared, they know her, its the daughter of Nicolae von Zeklos, Izabella.
Strangely enough, the servants and guards at the keep all seems to enjoy the fact that the Izabella is back. They believe she has come to watch over them.
The farmers and woodsmen around the keep all look at the keep with new eyes. The old lord of the Zeklos is dead and now the long dead daughter has returned. The peasants all find a new form of fear in the hearts for the keep.

Throughout the summer, rain or shine, though most likely rain, laborers and wagon loads of building materials are seen moving West and East along Old Svalich road between the Zeklos Keep and Vallaki.  The gold from the Church of Ezra had brought jobs, and with all the supplies and material that go into working on chapels, the local economy benefited many, both the working poor and the merchant class.

On this morning though, laborers with wagons packed, and guarded by the Zeklos boyar guards, come to a stop as they come across the blood stained, and smoking debris of the Western Wall, or what was left of it.  Men quickly remove tools from the wagon and begin working to clear the rubble from the road, to make enough room for the wagons to pass.  Grim faces dripped with ash and sweat as they had the awful time of coming across the occasional body part.

Tension runs high, as some fear that the Invidians will see the smoke rising from Vallaki, and think it an opportune time for an attack.  The men curse the Gundarakite Rebels under their breath, keeping a glaring eye on a Gundarakite man who's been in their hire all summer with the task of bringing water to the laborers as they work.  Anytime they come across a finger, arm, a foot, all of which was burnt, they barked at the Gundarakite laborer to come and take it away.  A pile was made, and who better, they thought, than to have a Gundarakite clean up the worse of the carnage that their kin, those filthy rebels, did start.

After finally clearing the way for the wagons, the labors, under the escort of the Boyar Guard, once again make their way to the Zeklos Keep.  The Keep's Chapel, it is rumored, is near completetion.

A certain Guard Corporal visits von Zeklos keep, and leaves a simple letter for Lady von Zeklos with one of the guards.

"Vladimir Kaiser will play ball with us. Speak to him about payments and he'll be your negotiator with the Mercenaries. Shouldn't cost too much, he has no love for the Invidians and I gave him the "fight alongside your countrymen for victory" spiel. - Crpl. Dragomir Katzinkaly"

A farm hand of the lord's keep reported a strange and unsettling discovery the previous night, during the wee hours of the morning when he ventured outside to use the outhouse.
He claims to have seen a slender figure, clad in a form fitting long black tunic and black cloak, it's face covered by a hood and scarf.
This mysterious figure was perched crouching in a tree and was allegedly described as wearing lots of undistinguishable equipment sheathed on a belt, as well as a large backpack.
The farmhand also seemed quite adamant that as soon as his emotions got running and fear mixed with anger developed, the figure without a word simply vanished from sight.
Despite being shooken up and nervous, the young man swears he thinks the elusive figure was observing the keep.....

The Escape and Menace of Dr. Payne & His Monster

The monster of Dr. Payne continues to rampage to the west of Vallaki.  Some claim the beast stands as tall as a tree, and has been uprooting trees and using them to bash barns, bludgeon cows, and batter farm equipment.

Others refute such descriptions of the monster, and claim the Monster changes forms, disguising itself among common forest animals and barn yard critters.

Still others say none have laid eyes on the monster itself, and have only seen the menacing work left in its wake upon the western countryside.

Dr. Payne, the mad scientists who is responsible for the monsters’ creation, had been captured and was being held prisoner deep within the dungeons of Zeklos Keep until this past week.

Anchorites and laymen of Ezra have been seen entering and leaving the Chapel more frequently with a sense of urgency.

Dr. Payne and His Monster are loose!

Orphans of War-Torn Zeidenburg

Zeidenburg, having been leveled by the Invidian barbarians, is now facing a crisis.  The Church of Ezra is making an effort to send resources to the war torn city, and Wardens of Ezra have been seen more often as of late traveling west and east between Vallaki and Zeidenburg.

According to local gossip, and confirmed by some eye witnesses, a mass burial followed by a ceremony conducted by Zeklos Chapel Warden Sylvatore took place this past week on Zeklos land.  It is said that the Church of Ezra had arranged for children to be escorted from Zeidenburg to the orphanage, where efforts to find the war orphans homes was underway.  The wagon of children, under the protection of two Wardens, were found butchered, left to the flies along the road.

Some claim it was Dr. Payne’s monster, while others refute this claim, saying that if it was Dr. Payne’s monster, the bodies would have been devoured.  Some wonder if the Gundarakite Rebels are to blame, having possibly mistook the wagon of children for being a wagon of supplies for the Vallaki Guard.  Though it is not certain who is to blame, one thing if for certain; Two Wardens of Ezra along with a dozen Barovian orphaned children have been buried and put to rest.

Some of the Zeklos guards whisper of a lone shadowy figure seen at the rare times in the trees near the wall. None are able to make out any details other then whoever...or whatever it is moves with speed almost unmatched by anything any have ever seen or heard of. A few braver souls attempt to fire arrows at the form but either they miss, or have no effect.

Since her return to attendance at the Chapel, the statues and altar are all immaculately cleaned and polished, the luster of the beautiful chapel made even greater by hours of devotion...and manual labor.

It is openly spoken among the farmers, at night, terrible keening sounds, as if a song emanating from the dark depths of night itself.
That a terrible, dark clad knight was seen roaming the zeklos land, wearing a menacing crown studded with glowing gems.

However, it is whispered amongst those farmers that this man apparently charged a patroling boyard and tromped all over him. Even more strange, was the fact that right after he subdued the boyar, at his command, he run down with unatural speed and ferocity a hooded peasant whom the boyar was questioning previously. Later, he was noticed escorting them both to the keep, both boyar and guard injured and bruised.

All in all, all these rumours of plagues and monsters and guards and cultists are adding up...

Rumors of a "vallaki man" resisting arrest and let go without penalty.  The von Zeklos Toret rumored to have somehow overruled the guards to prevent the detainees punishment.  The severity of sympathizing with prisoners is not small in the West.

As word reaches the bold Chapel, of serfs fleeing their homes, a litter of notes suddenly emerges, paperscripts all highlighting von Zeklos laws, specifically Law Fifteen stating Ezrites may take sanctuary there... the wording suggests indefinitely.

Would those serfs in von Zeklos fealty consider the message of Ezra, to bring their families into the well defended Keep?

Boyar guards scourge the Von Zeklos Lands as the Sun rises. Rumor of the search for two guards that have not reported spread amongst the denizens of the Boyardom, houses are searched and peasants are questioned.

Reigns a climate of unease as the growing rumors about imortij and cults would spread in their Lands. The words are hushed, kept within households. Many fear the word of plague. Fear is the reign that keeps them together.

In the aftermath of the slaughter and raid on the Keep, farmers and peasants are in shock. While a few peasants come to assist the Keep, many more are too afraid to approach the Keep, preferring to stay inside or leave their lands for good. Many families are seen packing up, herding their livestock and hoping for a better future elsewhere.

At the same time, an influx of poor and confused servants and nobles flock to Vallaki and even all the way to Krezk, spreading rumors of what happened at the von Zeklos Keep. Their tales vary wildly, but they all agree on one point. That Night itself descended upon the Keep and that the forces of darkness and evil attacked the Keep. Some blame this curse on the Ezrites, these poisonous Dilsnyia schemers while others speak of the strange and sometimes dark affiliations the Keep's own tenants had maintained throughout the years.

What great tragedy had happened in the von Zeklos lands!

The new boyaress Nicoletta von Zeklos - beloved by the populace for her beauty and wisdom - was murdered by hideous assassins from the west on the first day of her new reign! This had promissed so much hope and light to the populace! After the dark tragedy had striked down so hard upon the boyaress family! And now - everything is gone! Just the hatred and the desire for vengance in the populace remains! Some speak of a rebellion. Some of wicked murderers. Each and everyone was slain in the keep. It is rumoured that not one had survived the contumelious deed.

Farmers were fleeing from these thugs. To the north, to the south or to the east.

One can just hope that our beloved count Strahd von Zarovich will have his men hunting these assassins down soon. The populace at least mutters that it was outlanders performing the deed. Thus one can assume it will be hard times annunciate themselves on the horizon for every non-Barovian...

At least until the last one of these traitors is being found and brought to righteous judgement...

The grim faced Falkovnian who leads the strange Ezrites of the Darkonian creed from the ruined keep of von Zeklos, is seen these days standing on its walls barking orders and tasks to be done about the whole of the keep's jurisdiction. These strangers have made efforts to ensure that the soldiers coming from Krezk and elsewhere in the Wachter provinces can set up camp outside their walls, or within the long untended farmsteads.

Also of note, under the command of that same Falkovnian, the strangers be they cult master or mundane believer are savagely destroying beast and bandit alike, with hundreds of pelts from wolves and other animals hung from the walls, as well as those heads of greedy men, who thought these roads to sport easy prey.

A banner has been risen at the keep, upon it a sword blazing with powerful flames lying against a kite shield. To some it shall seem similar to the Ezrite holy symbol, to others, perhaps some other god, but the former is likely the intent.

Along with this there seem to be careful moves being made to clear debris, and ready rockfalls along the walls of the keep with the plentiful rubble there. The Falkovnian cultmaster could very well be preparing for a siege, or a battle of some kind. As to whether it shall be on behalf of the Wachters or the Ionelus' it cannot be overtly seen.

The efforts at the ruined keep have seemingly been unceasing. The sound of hammers and movement of material is heard day and night. A basic supply line between the Keep and the Border Outpost Zeklos has developed, where workers returning from foraging expeditions have been bringing wood to be processed. Evident of all this construction is the beginnings of refurbishing a tower within the keep...

Their Falkovnian cultmaster continues his routine of barking orders, or praying loudly from the walls as his followers toil. However, now, at night he can be found staring off from the walls towards Vallaki or the Wachterlands, as if expecting something....

While it seemed, for a brief, desperate, dark hour, that the dead would be triumphant, Ezrite templars both zealot and Pure Heart poured out from the chapel alongside the adventurers still-living, and drove the undead away into a full rout, away from the keep's walls. From within the crypt a banshee-like keening could be heard just before dawn. Indeed, scholars of the elder forms of Elvish might recognize most of the female voice's muffled lament:

Two...rushed together...
With crimson....the air above.
That...was the tender squeak
Of youth, when it's a prey to bleating love.

The swords are splintered, like our youth, my ...
And now it's ....and talons
....is child's play to the snarling
Of ...adults in ruptured passion.

The...is hell, and...

To embrace a death feud that never ends!

More undead churn out of the crypt, like macabre bees swarming from a hive as a new queen takes wing. Although the Ezrite Templars remain at their posts, none challenges the hooded figure who seems to command the hordes of shuffling, mindless corpses. She passes undeterred back and forth between the crypt and the larger keep, growing perhaps as restless as the ghastly rotted masses she commands, as unwilling as they are to stay confined to their tombs.

Now and then her baleful skeletal gaze looks east toward Vallaki.

Barricades are erected just outside the main gate leading inside the Keep, spikes pointed towards the interior, as to prevent something to get out.

Notices are pinned to the Wall Gate, reminding to the Pilgrims to keep it always closed.

When all was said and done, he assumed more casual custodial duties with a broom, dusting away at the dust that accumulated around the Chapel and it's ramparts.

Early in the night a letter drifted over towards the door of the Chapel, carried by the wind. Torn and crumpled, it carried a single message.

After Dusk, campfires are lit all along the ramparts of Raduta Keep.

A dark haired Ezrite Acolyte is seen bringing food to the Templars patrolling the walls, and spending the night in vigil along with them.

[In the dead of night a swarm of Gundarakites filed into the chapel, beaten and bloody, to patch their wounds. They were largely silent as their wounds were tended,  keeping their distance from the Ezrites. In the early hours of the morning, they grimly marched out and away.]

Word Spreads about a Camp being built just outside the walls of Raduta Keep, by the Ezrites.

They say that Calibans and Outcasts who wish to know about Ezra and accept her salvation are welcome to establish there and escape a life of sin, despair, and damnation among the fetid halls of the Drain.

Along the road towards the Zeklos keep there are skewered black ravens, several groups of five, long iron nails affixing their bodies to the trees. The bodies show signs of being shot down, and then impaled.
On the treebark, a single word is carved. "LEGION."

The impaled ravens have been pulled down, and tossed in a ditch out of sight. Hopefully, the superstitious locals did not notice the slaughter of these birds thought to ferry the souls of the dead to rest...

The defiled graves near Raduta have been spruced up to the best one can in that haunted land. The empty graves still remain open, their soil piled up to the side as they wait for the return of their stolen remains. A very grumpy grave keep may have been seen grumbling to herself and the other gravedigger, in a wickedly foul mood from the distrubances.

Within the courtyard of the old Raduta Keep, a ghostly scene of a criminal burning at the stake is witnessed. The vision is brief but the horror of the spectral apparition is distinct and haunting.

Ezrites from the Redoubtable Chapel of Our Eternal Guardian are seen about Wachter lands preparing for Toret Matthew Garrett's Fifth Day Service, in expectation of pilgrims, laity, and guests.

Ezrite Wardens, Templar, and those in training are seen making their way towards Raduta Keep daily, often found now gathered in the courtyard resuming drills or patrolling the walls of the keep, their vigilance increasing. Whatever they prepare for, they appear to be on high alert, as their focus shifts further inward.

Those wandering close to Raduta Keep would notice bolt throwers upon the walls and Ezrite Templars patrolling regularly. Those who have seen the gates open report a large siege engine behind the gates.  Occasionally crates are moved into the Chapel from the camp outside.

The Anchorites and Templars of the Redoubtable Chapel of Our Eternal Guardian and Raduta Keep are seen regularly patrolling the Old Svalich Road from the River Luna to the Zeklos Outpost. Rumor has it several traveler have been aided by the Church after having run into trouble with local fauna and bandits.

The mental and physical well being of the Templar guarding Raduta Keep seemed to be primary concern, following not only the continued horrors but also the disturbing treatment of Templar Musat by the Wachter guards after the massacre at Krezk. Vitals and vigor much have returned to expected, however, as heightened training has begun for not only new Templar in training, but also the Templar currently manning the chapel and the keep. Any visitors or passerby's would hear the shouts of drills and heavy footsteps from atop the walls of the keep as they are driven to ensure peak physical condition.

Sign alerting visitors to the training line the path leading up Raduta Keep from the Svalich Pass. What has caused this change in behavior is unknown, as things appear otherwise quiet at the keep.

After their long absence there is a reticent but decisive return to Raduta Keep as Wardens and Templars cross the Luna out of Vallaki at the break of dawn. There is talk overheard of the trail of a certain creature, a stealer of breath, as shields are raised high and swords drawn upon their march Westward. What is most unusual about their movement is the accompaniment of those familiar to Vallaki by another Warden, one wearing the markings of the Zealots of Nevuchar Springs. Not all of those departing are seen returning from the Wachter lands the next day.

More frequent becomes the movement between Vallaki and the chapel within the keep, the Ezrite's patrols becoming more fervent as they set out on the cusp of the night, moving upon any whisper to come from Raduta Keep. This night, as they are hurried to reach the sanctity of the chapels walls, they are found defiled with claims, defacing the side of the sole refuge from the haunting sounds that echo the ruined castle.

Patrols have begun once more along the Svalich Pass between the Watchter lands and Vallaki. More Templar are posted along the walls, as if in anticipation of something yet to come. Whatever preparations were made, however, were not enough, as an attack is made in the middle of the night, more severe than had been foreseen. Several Templar are left dead in it's wake.

By the end of the night great plumes of smoke are seen rising over the Wachter lands, said to be coming from the grounds of Raduta Keep. Those passing by would see the light of massive flames rising from the graveyard, as a large funeral pyre is build within. The sky is briefly alight around the keep, the thicket of mist that hangs overhead orange with the glow of the fire. Four bodies, wrapped in the green cloths of the Church of Ezra, burn with the relentless flames, tended to throughout the night by several Wardens. It is said, however, that five perished that night. Little is spoken of the fifth.

Waste is laid to Raduta Keep by men and women bearing the standards of the Brotherhood of the Whip.  Smoke, fire trailing out through the day, the altars were overturned and the rectory was systematically desecrated.  The statue to Ezra was toppled and smashed, and the rubble was only overshadowed by the thin coating of blood that coated the floor. The fallen, lifeless husks of Ezrite Templars and choir children were dragged into the courtyard of the keep and ritualistically sacrificed.  As dusk approached, strange glowing lights can be seen from the inside of the courtyard with the chilling chanting of the name "THE BLACK DUKE."  A few of the lucky interlopers to stumble into the diabolic ritual that proceeded were left with a reminder for their folly—the Black Duke's symbol carved into their flesh.

The Brotherhood of the Whip was said to have held the temple for the entirety of the day and left of their own free will rather than being driven out.

Near the ancient crypt in Raduta a scene of blood and gruesome display would be seen as a random elf had the symbol of the Eternal Order carved into his body. Near to it was a pamphlet and a sign that has been constructed.

A tiny red headed halfling woman could be seen on occasion, entering the dilapidated chapel with a bucket and mop. Just as she had done most nights in the Refuge of the Fifth Light, she spent her evenings cleaning. Though it didn't seem to make much of a dent, she worked on with a sense of pride and duty, humming softly to herself as she worked.

More and more the disheveled red headed halfling finds her way to the Redoubtable Chapel. As before she would clean and mop, but of late, she has taken rest in one of the beds tucked in the back and regularly sits and prays.
